Writer's Block | Part 3: Flatline

Rate this book
Surrounded by the ghosts of his past, Stu Remington is forced to get outside of himself to help a young mother and her cancer stricken daughter. But when faced with the fact that there are other forces at work in the universe, how will he respond?

*** From Amazon.com review by Chris Fried for Writer's Block Part 2 ***
After Stu initially gets over his writer’s block in Writer's The Weston Files Part One, he once again gets stuck. Living with his faithful dog Rolo, he makes his way through life day by day. Stu is still grieving the loss of his wife five years ago when he remembers an old memory from a time when she was alive and he was very happy. He also meets a mysterious stranger, Waylon, and there is definitely more to him than meets the eye. And how does Stu’s magical typewriter fit into all of this?

Setting up various threads, the author skillfully weaves them all together to form a compelling narrative of a man experiencing some denial of his grief while struggling with deadlines and losing his way in the process. An intriguing situation, a wonderful character in Stu and some playful humor to offset some of the darker aspects of this tale are all blended together in a small town setting to form a nuanced portrait of a man experiencing some complicated grief and we feel deeply for him, hoping things get better.

We also get hints of a larger story at work here in the sleepy town of Weston, with tantalizing glimpses into what’s really going on and enough clues revealed to make us want to know more. Fortunately, this serialized story has several more parts to it and I cannot wait to see where the story takes me next!

If you have read any of Hank Garner's previous works you already know that Weston is a special place... Flatline is my favorite episode in the series so far... The players and story threads for Writer's Block are melding together nicely... It was also one the most frustrating reads as well... As I seemingly galloped toward the ending, I suffered a vain hope that it wouldn't stop... And I did indeed gallop to an ending, that I was not ready for... So of course, I did the sensible thing and read it again... LOL... I highly recommend getting this serialized story... But don't start here go get part one...

Stu is struggling with everything except his dog, it seems. Still, he does seem to be dealing with the everyday things a bit better in this episode. He’s not sure what to think about Waylon, and you can’t really blame him for that. He’s not sure about himself either.

This episode moves along at a good pace. Things start to happen, interesting things. And they are still happening, all of them. I hope Hank is about done with the next episode, she grumbled. Enjoy, but watch out for that cliff!
