I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Jane Charlotte Danes fell in love with Matthew Cleaves. But Matthew choose duty over her love and now she is trying to make a new start by moving to Bath. But Matthew life of duty has started to fall apart since his wife has runway with another man. With that Matthew decided to go forward and try to get back his love Jane Charlotte Danes. Matthew goes to Bath to try to win her back. This was a different type of story than I would usually read as I would have like Matthew to chooser Jane first but it is nice too when you try a different type of story once in a while. This was ARC given for a Honest Review.
Set in England around the late 1800s, Her One True Love focuses on the theme of women’s rights and the journey of Jane making a life for herself, without a man to support her. The Victorian Era brought forth a change in Society even when women were still not considered to be free to do what they wanted. Jane at first, has the mindset to change that. She wants to support women’s rights and join groups catered to that cause. However, Jane does not take into account the personalities of other women who may yet sabotage that very cause. Her focus then turns to underprivileged children and helping at a boarding house.
Although I enjoyed the character and what she stood for, I found that her other characteristics were somewhat annoying. She kept going back and forth about her attraction to Matthew, a married man. Part of the reason why she decides to venture on her own and escape the town that she loves is because of her attraction to him. She was running away, from her feelings, that is. It was the constant inner battle within herself and at times her adolescent way of thinking that made me want to reach through my Kindle and shake some sense into her. I find that I also had that feeling with Matthew as well.
Being the Squire of his town, Matthew has a duty to uphold and his pride becomes hurt after his wife has an affair and leaves him for her lover. It was that pride, his lack of awareness of Jane’s feelings, and his somewhat mean reasoning towards his wife and his unwillingness to forgive and forget, that made me want to shake him as well.
Both Jane and Matthew are stubborn. But two butting heads make for a better story. The story had a slow but steady pace and I found that I quite enjoyed it. I think if a story makes you feel certain emotions towards the characters, whether it’s annoyance, hate, displeasure etc, then the author did a good job in conveying their personalities. The author’s writing is easy to follow and although the plot was not an exciting one, it still was a pleasurable one.

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Clare's Mad About Books
Rachel Brimble doesn't disappoint with this wonderful tale of Jane a young woman from a good middle class family and Matthew the Squire of their village of Biddlestone. They have long been friends but duty over the years has kept them from being anything more. Jane decides to move to Bath and move on with her life when Matthew's wife becomes estranged and he still shows no sign of him thinking of her as still nothing more than a friend while he wallows in self pity over a woman he never loved. I loved the characters how they fought with themselves in trying to do the right thing for everyone else but never them self and Jane when deciding to making a life for herself, how she becomes a strong independant woman with her move and determination to do good working with the poor and orphaned children. Lots of sweet and tender moments but also plenty of passion and fire to make a very pleasant book to read.
I received a copy of this book as an ARC for an honest reveiew! I found the bookmark to get into and keep reading. However I kept plugging through it! Jane finds herself with the opportunity to start fresh in the big city but can she leave Matthew behind.
Matthew has had a rough patch with his wife leaving him but needs to open his eyes to the one person who does love him just the way he is.
I recieved this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is romantic and heartfelt. Jane determined to help the children and not backing down tore at my heart strings. Matthew finally has his eyes open to what is right in front of him and finally decides to do the right thing. I highly recommend reading this romantic and heartfelt story.
Her One True Love is the 4th book in Rachel Brimble's Victorian Romance series. Although part of a series it can easily be read as a stand alone novel. This is the first book I have read by this author and it certainly won't be the last. This is the story about Jane Charlotte Danes. She has been in love with her village's squire for as long as she can remember. She thinks he is the perfect man, and sometimes she thinks that he may have feelings for her too. When he marries another her heart is broken. She realises she can't stay in the country any longer and decides to move on with her life. She wants to move to Bath with her maid turned companion and friend. She wants to do something worthwhile with her life and her aim is to somehow work with underprivileged children. Matthew Cleaves is the squire, and although he has had feelings for Jane, he knows he must follow his father's wishes and marry well. He marries, and although not in love, he is determined to make his marriage work. He carries out his responsibilities to the villagers, and he works hard at his marriage. Unfortunately his wife falls in love with somebody else and leaves him. It hits Matthew hard, and he starts neglecting both himself and the villagers. He becomes a man that Jane realises isn't the man anymore that she fell in love with. It makes her decision to leave for Bath even easier. Matthew is shocked when he finds out that Jane is leaving, and it suddenly hits him that he married for the wrong reasons and that he doesn't want to live his life without Jane in it. She is determined to live her life in Bath and achieve her goals of working with children. Can Matthew convince her of his love for her, and be the man that she loved before his wife's betrayal changed him? What happens if he can? Jane doesn't want to leave Bath, and she certainly doesn't want to ruin her reputation by having a relationship with a married man. Matthew's wife may have left him, but he is still married and his wife can come back at any time wanting to try again at their marriage. Jane doesn't want to be in the way of a possible reconciliation between them, but can she harden her heart and keep him away for her? This is a truly beautiful story of unrequited love that has every chance of becoming true love. There are many obstacles in their path, and reading how Matthew and Jane try to overcome those obstacles is a real treat. If any two people should be together it is these two. It's never a foregone conclusion that things will work out between them and that makes for a very interesting story that keeps you captivated throughout. Another thing I loved about the book is that it's not just the main characters that you enjoy reading about. There is a character that plays only a small part in the book, a woman who runs a boarding house for underprivileged children. The depth of her character is surprising, so much so that I could happily read a book just about her. Then of course there is Jane's companion, she is a lovely young woman who also wants to work with underprivileged children. She's been a maid to Jane for a long time, and they easily became friends, so the move to being her companion was easily done. With her new status she can work, and she is open to a higher class of love. Again, another character who could easily have a book just about her. With characters such as these alongside the main characters you can tell just how good a book this one is. I recommend it 100%. I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
4 sometimes all you desire and deserve is staring you in the face stars. This is a story of a young man and woman who have known each other all their lives, care for each other, yet struggle to find their way together. It shows how sometimes you have to make a change in order to truly find the life you desire and the love you deserve and also that you must be brave with your heart. I was held in the book's world easily for both Matthew and Jane were solid characters and the tension between them, the love between them and the possibility of them was something quite beautiful. The read is a good one and it is a different life view outside of London, high titles and wild society parties normally found in Historical Romance reads.
If you like a strong woman who decides to throw precaution to the wind and look after herself with out a man then you would enjoy this book.
Jane Danes comes from a middle class family and has been friends with Matthew Cleaves since they where young. Jane is hopelessly in love with him, but Matthew - the local squire has a duty to his family and position to marry correctly and does so leaving Jane heartbroken.
When Matthews wife runs off with her lover, Matthew is disheartened until he hears that Jane is leaving to pursue her own fortune and career and live without a man in her life and he knows that after the kick in the chest he got to find out she was leaving, that Jane is His TRUE LOVE and he had to win her back.
This story goes onto show you how Jane goes about getting herself a job that she wants to do even though women back then were still not allowed to do certain things and how Matthew tries to show her how he feels through his actions.
I loved this book and Rachel has certainly given us great characters and a fantastic story line that keeps you hoping that everything will turn out right.
‘Her One True Love’ is a beautifully-written love story set in Victorian England.
Jane Danes is a young woman, living in the small, rural village of Biddlestone. For many years, Jane has been in love with the town’s Squire, Matthew Cleaves. However Matthew has never known of Jane’s love for him, marrying another woman, and leaving Jane heartbroken.
After both her parents die, Jane decides to move out of the village and into the family home, located in the city of Bath.
She wants to make something of herself, and help others in the process. She feels that the time is right to move on, knowing that the one person that she has loved forever, can never be hers.
Matthew is a decent, hard-working man, who married his wife Elizabeth without actually being in love with her. When Elizabeth leaves him for another man, Matthew is humiliated, more than upset. He doesn’t want other peoples’ pity, and certainly not Jane’s.
This is a story of two people being so very much in love, that they are to blind to see how the other one feels.
I loved Jane’s character. She is a very headstrong young woman, with a fire in her belly, and a determination to change her life from the path that she is destined for.
The book is set in an era of change for women. An era of suffragettes, and women realising that they can be independent, and that they don’t have to just become wives and mothers.
Rachel has broken all norms that you associate with Victorian England. You don’t associate that era with women leaving their husbands for other men, for young women to go off on their own, with no chaperone, and you certainly don’t think about the family maid becoming a loyal friend.
This is what I liked about the book. It took the historical past and shook it up, yet still making it very believable.
I also loved the conflict that Rachel has created between the two main characters, as they battled between their morals and their hearts.
The book is beautifully written and will have you glued to the pages. It is a feel-good, heart-warming romance story, that will take you back in time and absorb you in to a world very different from the present.
Here One True Love by Rachel Brimble what a beautiful sweet story. This is my first historical romance and I loved it, I will definitely be reading more. The characters Jane and Matthew were well written and likable. Rachel has sold me on this genre of books. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Jane always had a secret crush on Matthew. He never knew and married another woman. Jane's heart has been crushed and to get over him she makes the decision to leave Biddestone. She will move to her house in the city and will try to make something of her life.
When Matthew is told that Jane is leaving town he's worried sick. He wants to make sure that she is safe and travels with her and her friend Jeannie to the city. He notices that Jane has changed and he likes the woman she has become very much. The only thing is he is still married to his estranged wife Elizabeth.
Both of them find out that they can no longer hide their feelings for each other. But what can they do? Jane refuses to lose her good reputation because she loves a married man. Matthew knows he will never be able to forget Jane and returns to Biddestone so he can settle things with his wife. Will he choose the life and love he wants or won't he be able to let go of the duties that came with his marriage?
Rachel Brimble has done such a good job creating the right atmosphere for this book and the language she uses is perfect for the story. It was like I was reading about people who actually existed a long time ago. The setting and the way the characters speak to each other took me back in time straight away.
There is one quote that really says it all for me:
"If there is one thing I have learned through my career in Bath and through my marriage thus far, it is that the path to true love and happiness never runs smoothly. You have to fight for it, live through the cracks in your heart, and be determined to find your happily-ever-after."
Her One True Love is a beautiful story about finding the love of your life and the obstacles that are sometimes standing in the way of happiness. This book is very well written and it's an enjoyable read about life in another era.
Miss Jane Charlotte Davis lives in Marksville House with her sister, Monica and her husband, Thomas. She has been in love with Squire Matthew Cleaves since she was a child.
Matthew married another woman who ended up leaving him to be with her lover. Even with his pain, he tries to carry on with life. The prosperity of the town of Biddestone depends upon him.
Things between Jane and Matthew have been strained. Jane is also angry that Matthew has been so devastated by his wife’s infidelity and she would like to see him stop brooding and get a grip on his life again.
Jane was the caregiver for her mother for many years. The woman was hateful and difficult and unthankful to Jane. Now that her mother has passed away, Jane has decided that she wants to move to Bath to live in the home that was left to her by her father. She plans on working there and will take her maid, Jeannie, with her to be her companion.
Once in Bath, Jane find a boarding house for children where she wants to volunteer her help. The children she sees there don’t seem happy and that upsets her.
When Matthew and Jane meet up in Bath, he is happy to do what he can to help Jane get a job providing what help she can to the children in the boarding house. Their togetherness sparks an attraction that has always simmered between them. This realization is what makes Matthew decide that he must finally take action and divorce his wife.
Jane is a very independent young woman and while she loves Matthew, she knows she will not be content to just be a wife. She needs to be involved with helping people.
Will there be a future for their relationship?
This is a clever and clean story which I enjoyed. I’m sure other readers will as well.
Jane Charlotte Danes is the daughter of good standing and a certain amount of wealth. Squire Matthew Cleaves has the responsibility of his entire community upon his shoulders. Jane and Matthew grew up the best of friends but he was required to marry at his station and fulfill duties to his family line and his position. That did not keep Jane from growing feelings towards him her entire life... until the day Matthew married Elizabeth.
Not too many years later, the shamble of a marriage disintegrates when Elizabeth is the one to disgrace the joining. By this time, Jane's parents are gone and her sister has married and built a solid life for herself. Jane finds the courage to decalre that this is her turn, her time. Their father left one hone each to his two daughters. Jane's is away from the village in the larger city.
Everyone is concerned how Jane will fare unsupervised in a city. Jane is determined to make her life count for something. She has a desire to be around children and to give children a better life. However, this is in an era where women of breeding do not take on jobs nor express their opinions in opposition to men.
To complicate matters, the man she wants to distance herself from, Squire Matthew, decides to make himself her protector. Can they deny the feelings that are naturally between them? Can Jane save her reputation when being so often in the company of a married man?
A very pleasant Victorian novel with strong women and the parameters and decorum carried over through Regency times. Many obstacles and emotions to overcome, this story has a broad happy ending.
Her One True Love is a book set in Victorian England. The main character Jane is a feisty woman, set on independence and forging a life for herself without the assistance of her family or having to rely on a man to shape her or fulfill her life. She has a big heart and wants to help people. Jane is not the norm for that period in history and her story is closely linked with the struggle women of the period faced because they wanted more rights and equality.
Driven by the need to get away from the happy family life her sister and her husband have and which Jane is a little jealous of, and the realisation that the man she loves, Matthew will never be hers, Jane decides to move to Bath and live in her deceased father's house. Matthew, the village squire married someone else and despite the fact that the marriage did not last, Jane sees no future for herself and Matthew. Too afraid to pursue her feelings, Jane cannot stay in the village so she heads for a new life in Bath, bringing Jeannie her maid with her to be her companion. However, Matthew has other ideas, insistent on accompanying her to Bath to ensure her safety. This trip has repercussions for Matthew and his heart and head suddenly realise his feelings for Jane. But, Jane is set on a road for independence and a desire to help the poor children she comes across, no matter what!
Throughout, Jane tries very hard to be angry with Matthew but never seems to quite pull it off. I particularly liked the scene where Matthew is invited to afternoon tea with one of the local ladies groups in Bath and gets more than he bargained for. Jane is quick to step in. He in turn, is determined to let Jane have her own way yet continues to be drawn to her, particularly when she seeks his assistance. He just can't say no to her. Although Matthew and his wife are no longer together both he and Jane are aware that society would dictate that he is still married and both their reputations are at stake should their friendship ever develop.
Rachel Brimble tells a beautiful story. Set in period in history where change is coming, particularly for the rights of women, the language is rich and beautiful. I have become such a huge fan of historical fiction lately and the writing style here transports the reader instantly into the era. Having read Rachel Brimble's modern contemporary romances I was pleasantly surprised by how fluidly she makes the transition to writing historical romance. I imagine writing different genres would be difficult for many authors but Rachel has pulled it off so well with this wonderfully executed story of love, friendship and not realizing that love is closer than you think. And, like any good love story, there are lots of hurdles along the way!
Matthew and Jane have known each other a long time but only one has loved the other as more than a friend for too many years to count. Or so it seemed, to me at least.
I admire Jane for, finally, wanting to pursue her dreams. The man she loves is not the man he could be. His wife's infidelity has left him angry, cold, and distracted. The tenants under his care have suffered because of it, and so has Jane. So it's time to leave, head for greener pastures and do good in the world, care and love for children who have been cast aside for whatever reason. Her willingness, determination, and, most importantly, her heart shine like strong beacons through the uncertainty of whatever the future holds for her.
Which wasn't supposed to be Matthew except he was determined to be a part of it regardless of what she said.
Matthew was complicated. Aside from the bitterness he felt over his wife's actions, there was the very slow realization that what he felt for Jane wasn't as sudden as it appeared to be. He married his wife because it was what his father wished. But before, during, and even after his marriage Jane was a constant in his life. Before he married, she was his closest friend, his confidant, the one he could just be himself with without his social status standing between them. It took losing his wife, following Jane to Bath, seeing how excited and passionate and adamant Jane was about living this new life without him that he realized it was her all along.
A woman like Jane was worth her weight in gold. Accepting who and what she was, always had been and always would be, to him gave Matthew the resolve to find and end things with his wife. Losing Jane wasn't an option. Yes, he had obligations at home. Yes, she had dreams in a different city. He was willing to figure out how all of that would work so long as she figured it out with him.
The things that laid between Matthew and Jane in their story were explored and resolved. Dreams were realized and made reality. Compromises were made at the same time promises were. This wasn't just a love story. It was a new beginning story as well, one I think many others will enjoy like I did.
"Her One True Love" by Rachel Brimble. I enjoyed this historical tale of love and growth. Jane and Matthew - at times, they frustrated the heck out of me and other times, my heart swelled and I adored them both. Jane is finally realizing what she needs to make her happy - I admired her strength and courage to pursue her dream of helping children, even if it was a second to loving Matthew. Matthew, he was so lost. His failed marriage did a number on him and, being a guy, was totally clueless to Jane's feelings. I enjoyed their journey and seeing each come into their own and recognize their true inner beings. The secondary characters were enjoyable as well and added depth to the story too. The pace moves along, not too fast but not too slow, and I always enjoy when the writing style depicts both characters' POV's. I would recommend this tale of love, friendship and self awareness. (received copy from NetGalley for honest review).
Jane Danes has always been the one to look after her mother, when her mother was ill Jane was there to care and look after her as well as their house in Bidderstone. Now that she has passed away and Jane's sister Monica has come home for good, Jane has decided that she wants to branch out on her own and make something of herself. Even though she tells people that it is her own choice and something she has been planning for a while, that may not be completely true. A big part of the reason for this change has more to do with the handsome village squire who has failed to notice her and now Jane feels it is time to move on. Matthew Cleaves has always put the people of Bidderstone first before himself and his life, then again that is what his father expected of him as the squire. When Matthew married Elizabeth, he never expected that his wife would have an affair with another and leave him, making him withdrawn and unable to focus on his work. When Jane announces that she is to move to Bath with her maid, everyone is shocked even more so Matthew who doesn't even know how to react to the news of possibly losing Jane from his life forever. After Jane arrives in Bath, it doesn't take her long to feel at home and have a passion to help children who are without in the worst parts of the city. When she needs Matthew's help with getting the job she is hesitant to ask as she knows that he would become a part of her new life, something which she didn't really want. Something shifts in both Jane and Matthew's relationship causing their feelings to come out in a dangerous way that would go against the vows that Matthew made and Jane's pride in her new life. This makes them realise what they knew all along and how it will change their lives as they know it. My favourite character would have to be Jane, she is so strong and it made her seem so sure of herself even though she still has moments when she is unsure. With her independent streak and loveable nature, she is someone who people could look up to and you are rooting for her to get what she wants in her life as she deserves it. Her One True Love is a heartbreaking story about love, friendship and finding your place in life. With the passion, love and moving story, it tells you about how sometimes your one true love is in front of you all along. If I had to sum this book up in three words, they would be Inspiring, Captivating and Sweet.
Jane has loved the town's squire, Matthew, for as long as she can remember. They have been friends, but when Matthew married a woman named Elizabeth, Jane was devastated. Some time later it becomes public knowledge that Elizabeth has had an affair, and left her husband. This causes great scandal obviously, and leaves Matthew very upset. He feels as though he has failed as a husband, not being able to keep his wife happy. He becomes depressed and grumpy, and the town gossip does improve his mood.
Jane is still in love with him, but so tired of his depressed attitude. There is tension between them, but she can't stand the way he shrugs off everything she says. So on somewhat of an impulse, Jane decides to go to Bath. Her father died and left her property, and she has never been to see it. She also has a calling to help those women and children in the city of Bath who are less fortunate than her. Jane decides it's time to make a move in her life and do something. When Matthew hears of this, he is upset and feels protective and decides to accompany Jane to Bath for a brief time.
Of course then they realize they have feelings, but Matthew is still technically married and the story progresses. Unfortunately, I found is so slow. At first Matthew is all surly and staring at Jane and ticked off and I liked it. And Jane loves him and wants this intense man. But then the intensity in Matthew turns more into a whiny, simpering mess. A man who can't commit to Jane because of Elizabeth but who wants Jane. So he just follows her around, as Jane experiences Bath and I needed more from them. I wanted to shake them both and tell them to get on with it. I understand Matthew is still married and needs to rectify that situation - so go rectify it! For the love.
While in Bath, Jane decides to help a woman raising a bunch of kids - who doesn't want Jane's help. This drags out throughout the story and it didn't engage me. Meanwhile, Jane can't make up her mind if Matthew is really the one for her.
By the end, when they do cement their romance, there is emotion and feeling. But it was too little too late to save the story.
Her One True Love by Rachel Brimble Kensington Books Lyrical Press Given a topic of Victorian romance coupled with a marriage in name only and committing yourself into another relationship all while the women try to race into a modern era. What a plotline to write! I am normally not a fan of the modern woman historicals. I had to eat my words with this one! The entire writing is done in such a way that you just keep wanting to read more. The Heroine is strong and well developed in her character and the Hero is also a strong and well developed character. The life they both have shows elements of reality that brings compassion and heart into the story itself. You are caught and keep reading wondering how it will be handled hoping for both of them that they find each other and not knowing how that will be accomplished with one in a marriage and the other not. My heart hurt for them both at times and I cheered the heroine on at others. What a wonderful way of writing this author has. She is truly amazing to take on such a touchy subject and make it where it ends in the best way for all of her characters! All done without lies and deceit! Kudos to this author and Talent! You will absolutely love the way she unfolds the story itself. I was given this book in return for an honest review. Swedenmom
This was a sweet romance with a few passion filled moments. The story ended the way I thought it would but for a while a lot of things happened where I didn't think it would get there. But I suppose if things are meant to be then it will happen no matter what happens or how long it takes. A well written story that made me think more about what things of importance should be stressed upon.
I've read a lot of books by Rachel Brimble, especially her books for Harlequin Superromance. She writes smart books. That smart quality extends to her historical romances too. This isn't your typical historical romance, because Matthew is trying to win her after his wife leaves him. In fact, his relationship status doesn't change through much of the book. Definitely not what you'd see in your usual Victorian romance. I like that, because things always need shaking up when it comes to romance.
Jane is a very headstrong character. She's smart and she knows what she wants. I'm actually surprised that when it came to Matthew she didn't go after him from the start and for a woman that thinks for herself that she worried about convention.
She moves to Bath to be a sort of social worker, helping needy children. I liked that she was socially aware, but even when it came to getting her job, things came without much of a struggle and even the woman that runs the boarding house seems to take to her fairly quickly
I felt sorry for Matthew, who was really between a rock and a hard place. I wish there would have been a little more drama with Elizabeth to be more convincing. Elizabeth gave in too quickly for my liking.
I enjoyed this book a great deal, but it would have been better if there were a little more conflict.
If you are looking for something different plot wise, this is definitely a book to give a try. I recommend Rachel Brimble's books highly and this one definitely!
This book is set at the end of the nineteenth century and a romance wrapped in a story of women’s rights. Jane Danes has been in love with Squire Matthew Greaves for years and after he married another, she was devastated. After his wife left him, Matthew still did not look at Jane as anything other than a friend, so Jane has decided to finally move on and follow her dream of helping the less fortunate children of Bath. As she readies to leave home, Matthew starts to open his eyes to what life would be like without Jane in it every day and realizes that his feelings run deeper than he had ever admitted.
As Jane needs Matthew to endorse her and open the doors for her to begin working in an orphanage, they spend time together outside of their home town and their feelings begin to grow. Jane does not want give up her work with the children of bath and Matthew has his responsibilities as the Squire of Biddlestone. When they realize that they are each other’s one true love, can they find a compromise that will work for both of them?
I really enjoyed this book by Rachel Brimble. I had previously only read her contemporary romances, and this is the first of her historical romances that I have read. I believe that she successfully captured the feel for the historical era she was writing about.
Jane Charlotte Danes has recently endured one of the most heartbreaking events a lady can experience: the man she loves, Matthew Cleaves married another lady. Jane was forced to pick herself up and carry on in the same village as squire Matthew and his wife Elizabeth.
Two years later, Elizabeth runs off with her lover leaving Matthew humiliated and the object of gossip in the ton. Jane was torn because she wants Matthew but not at they expense of her reputation. Elizabeth didn't divorce Matthew so Jane doesn't want to be a mistress. She's also afraid the ton would assume she is the reason Mathew filed for divorce instead of fighting to reclaim Elizabeth. But what matters most is what is in Matthew's heart? Why did he marry Elizaebth? Is Jane 2nd choice because he was discarded? No one wants to be a consolation prize.
Jane and Matthew had to navigate these issues as well as the minefield known as the ton before they could finally be together. It wasn't smooth and there was a good amount of miscommunication. This love story didn't feel passionate to me. Jane and Matthew didn't have that chemistry I expect in this kind of HR. I also found the writing a little bumpy. I liked the premise but the execution didn't lend to feeling a connection with the hero or heroine. I like Jane's independent spirit but she just wasn't memorable.
I was satisfied with the ending as love prevailed and I was happy that both Jane and Matthew finally got their happily ever after.
*I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
MY REVIEW Having only ever read Rachel’s Templeton Cove series, this was a completely new departure for me. And a rather enjoyable one. Both Bath and the village of Biddestone are well known to me, so as I read I could actually visualise where the action was taking place. Growing up with Matthew Cleaves Jane Danes has always loved him. Her most painful experience was to watch him marry someone else. But that someone has now abandoned him to be with another man. Since his wife's departure Matthew has become an insular grouchy man, abandoning his responsibility as squire to the village. After running into sharp tongued Jane and her sister Monica he visits the local pub only to find himself facing some more home truths from barmaid Maggie. He realises how much his wife’s actions have affected not only him but those he is responsible for. It’s a wakeup call. Now their elderly mother has died Jane has decided to take up residence in the family’s town house in Bath leaving her sister and brother in law to run their country home, the Marksville Estate. She plans an independent life doing something to help those less fortunate. When Matthew learns of this he's concerned about the move. Despite her protests he insists on accompanying her to Bath to see her safely to the house. Jane is very independent, totally at odds with her contemporaries who love to shop, take tea and gossip. She resents Matthew’s intrusion in her life but another part of her can’t deny the attraction she still has for him. Despite their tendency to rub each other up the wrong way, the two eventually realise they love each other. But it’s a forbidden love and one which has no future when he still remains married to his wife.
A lovely read about forbidden love and second chances.
Heart-thumpingly passionate, and great for a winter's night!
I’m new to Rachel Brimble’s work, and I have to say, HOTL is a wonderful introduction to a very talented author. A Harlequin Historical Romance, this is a delightful piece of passionate escapism. Jane is at a transitional period in her life; she has the means to make a real difference, away from the constraints of the family home where she grew up. Deciding to up sticks and move to her father’s old town house in Bath, she wants to put her interest in children’s welfare to good use, and escape the seemingly inescapable destiny of being yet another well bred country miss.
But there’s a problem; a broodingly handsome, squire shaped problem. Squire Matthew Cleaves, the major landowner in Jane’s home village, fresh from the heartbreak and social embarrassment of his wife running off with another man, has occupied Jane’s thoughts and inflamed her heart for many years. The move to Bath should be the clean break she needs, but when Matthew hears of Jane’s plans to start a new life in Bath, he is determined to follow her to make sure she does it safely. Will Jane accept his help in order to fulfil her dreams of a life outside of the family home, or will the strong social codes of the day thwart her desires? And can she trust herself to follow her dreams, when her heart is begging to be followed, too? And what of Matthew? Will he be able to move on from the controversies that dogged his married life and balance his duty to the estate with the passions of his heart? A page turning, heart thumping romance, Her One True Love will keep you warm on a winter’s night!
I have to say that I instantly liked Jane she was a very determined character and once her mind was made up she acted. It was great to see her speak so honestly to Matthew well in most things except for revealing her feelings for him. Jane's independence and desire to help people is a lovely attribute. Matthew has similar traits and is determined to help the village after letting his responsibilities slip.
Although at times I wished I could have knocked some sense into them both but this would have resulted in a very short story. It made everything all the more enjoyable to see them hit some bumps along the way. There is a sizzling chemistry that Jane and Matthew share. I loved that they were friends to start with this just made me root for them even more.
The story moved at a good pace and I enjoyed Jane achieving some independence at a time when that wasn't always possible. Unrequited love can be tough and at times I felt so sorry for Jane. However is Jane's love unrequited after all that is the question?
Her One True Love is a lovingly written story that had two engaging and at times stubborn characters that kept me entertained throughout.
Heart warming and perfect to curl up with!

My review originally posted on Romancing-the-Book.com is below:
Brimble's Her One True Love is a historical romance set in England in the late 1800's. It's also a continuation of the story told in her book, What a Woman Desires , even though it's not listed as a series. It was nice to be reunited with sisters, Monica and Jane, Monica's friends from the theater as well as Matthew, Thomas, Jeannie and others.
Monica gave up the stage and is happily married to Thomas. They live in her family home that passed to her upon the deaths of her and Jane's parents. Jane has an unrequited love that she needs to get away from and thus leave home and the village they live in. She decides to move to Bath along with her maid, Jeannie, who is now to be her companion. Jane wants to work with children and give some meaning to her life but also wants Jeannie to experience new things. When Matthew, the squire of the village who is married but living apart from his wife, hears she plans to leave he decides to make a business trip to Bath to get business for his village and the people that work there. Matthew decides that Jane and Jeannie should travel with him to be safe and it will give him more time to spend with Jane. He is torn between his duty towards his village and his love for Jane who no longer wants to live there.
There is chemistry between Jane and Matthew but each thinks it's friendship for the other. Little do they know how much they care for each other since both are oblivious. Everyone around them though can see the sparks and longing. There are some tender moments and then one or the other takes one or two steps back. They are right for each other but unfortunately neither are mind readers and Jane and Matthew always seem to doubt the others feelings and don't communicate well at all. Throw in that Matthew is still married even though his wife left him and their actions could tarnish Jane's reputation.
There are family and friends, a village to care for, boarding houses with children to love and be reunited with their parents, sadness, tears, anger, hurt, meetings, reminisces, laughter, happiness, loving and love. Jeannie is very aware of people's feelings and the needs of others. There are vivid descriptions throughout that made me feel that I was there.
The epilogue tied up most of the loose ends and gave nice closure along with the happily ever after I was hoping for. There could be more stories to tell since Jeannie was an integral part of this book as a companion to Jane in Bath but her story isn't fully told and I'd love to know how her life turned out.
Brimble is a fairly new to me author. I hope to read many more of her books and need to go back and read the Templeton Cove series since I've only read the fifth book in the series, Her Hometown Redemption. I hope we meet up with the people of Biddlestone, England once again!
WARNING: This book is recommended for mature audiences only due to sexual content (that happens outside of marriage). If this is not your cup of tea, then this book may not be for you. However, you can just as easily skip that scene and not miss any of the overall plot.
This story was an ok read. It was definitely a bit different than the novels I usually read in that the hero of this story was already married to someone else (albeit estranged from her).
I enjoyed watching Jane as she seemed to mature from someone who was used to being told what to do, into a woman who figured out what she wanted and went for it. I liked that she choose to start over in a new place, but went with the intention not just of getting away from Matthew, but also as a way to help impoverished and orphaned children.
However, I found myself hard to believe in the chemistry between the two main characters. Sure, they gazed into each others eyes a lot, and they claimed they held an affection for each other, but it wasn't something that I felt that I really believed in. I can believe that Jane held an affection for Matthew her entire life, but for him to suddenly "discover" her when she had been his close friend for years?
Another point of contention for me is that I would say at a decent portion of this story is about her trying to push him away, and then allowing herself to get closer to him. Instead of this back and forth between them that became somewhat repetitive, I would rather have seen more interactions between her and the children she would be helping care for. Or perhaps a more detailed scene between Matthew and his estranged wife.
Overall, I think this story may still appeal to some fans of historical novels (especially ones that are somewhat different than the usual).

Simple, sweet, and clean romance with rich and alluring characters . .
A historical read that was sweet, simplistic, clean, involving. Jane and Matthew have much to get through. Maybe it is best that it is done apart from one another. Jane can no longer sit on the sidelines. Matthew being a man does not want to let her go.
Looking for a clean romance that give you a full body story. Characters that are rich and alluring. Then you have come to the right place. Pick your copy up of Her One True Love.
