We all have times in our lives when the results of our behavior don’t seem to be meeting our needs. These shortfalls may result in depression, anger, frustration, and relationship struggles, among a host of possible symptoms. It often seems difficult to see a clear path out of the problems. Even when we try to change our behavior, it doesn’t stick—before we know it we’re right back where we started.
In this new book, Hyrum Smith does two things that are invaluable to people who wish to make their lives less painful. First, he reveals, through a clear and simple model, how we get to the point where our behaviors cause these kinds of problems. Then, with a simplicity that is impressive in itself, he describes the steps we must take to identify and rectify the beliefs leading to our painful behavior.
Through the use of the Reality Model and the concept of the Belief Window, illustrated through humorous anecdotes and a powerful experience at a high school, Smith not only lays out the intellectual framework of his approach but draws you in emotionally as well. When you are done, you will agree with him that the solution to our problems is simple. It’s not easy, but it is simple.
The result is a powerful process for transforming your habits and relationships and achieving lasting personal and career success.
“Read You Are What You Believe and change the results you’re getting in an area of your life that’s not working. Thanks, Hyrum, for sharing the simple truths inherent in your Reality Model. A light read...a quick read at a little over 100 pages. It was insightful and interesting..highlighting here and there..something I can revert back to from time to time.
You Are What You Believe by author Hyrum W. Smith does actually contain simple steps to help transform your life. Will it transform your life?? I don't know that it will....but it was a nice guide...and that is def a starting point which is a good thing.
This took me forever to read..having started it in December and am writing a review in February. The truth is I read the book in a day. However, I wanted to put this methods to practice...and to test. I wanted to take the time to study the concepts introduced...to make an attempt to take a self-help book and use it for it's intended purpose. Again...I don't know if this is the holy grail of self-help...but it was decent. And maybe I have actually followed a few key points......
Thanks as always to the wonderful peeps here at goodreads, the publishers of this book, and to Hyrum W. Smith for my free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review to which I gladly and voluntarily gave.
It is an explanation of why you do what you do, and how to change it if you're not happy with the results you're getting, in any area of your life.
It is a quick read (84 pages) that packs a lot into a small space. There is not a lot of fluff and filler. The author recommends you take notes, and I did, extracting 10 pages of notes out of those 84 pages. The techniques work, and I have already noticed changes in myself, after only a few days.
A previous review gave the book 3 stars, based not on actually reading it, but looking at the table of contents and declaring it is the same thing that's in all of the author's other books. I have not read those other books, so I can't speak to that criticism. But I highly recommend this book for its simplicity and effectiveness. 7 people found this helpful.
This book is a must for anyone: - in business - who wants to improve their life - who has kids - who thinks that they are perfectly fine the way they are - ... and more This book, if you apply its content, will change your life
made me think it was more of the same old "positive thinking" self help advice that has been done hundreds of times, But it is not that at all. It is an explanation of why you do what you do, and how to change it if you're not happy with the results you're getting, in any area of your life.

This book is in story form (which makes it an easy read), telling us how he used the Reality Model and the impact it made a certain group of individuals. This model helps me every day. When I find myself in a patern of behaviors that I don't like, I think to myself "will this meet my needs over time?" and "what principle and need are driving this behavior and how can I adjust that principle to better meet my need?"
Favourite book of all time!! I listened to the audiobook and was easy listening, entertaining and SO POWERFUL. Helped me understand why people do the things they do. Even if I see others choices as destructive, for them, their behaviour fills a need. I would recommend to everyone, especially teenagers.
Principles are what we believe to be true about ourselves, and what we believe about the world and our place in it.
The principles we follow don’t change based on how our outside circumstances influence us.
Correct principles can give us direction as we make life decisions. They are guideposts that help us successfully navigate the bombardment of change we are experiencing every day.
This book is a great read on helping us to understand why we think and do what we think and do. I highly recommend having this in your library and reading it often to improve how you think so that you can change what you do.
Nothing really new hear but an interesting way of looking at things that got me thinking about the glass window through which I see the world. Definitely worth the read.
Listened to the audio book while walking. Easy and quick listen (2 hours I think). Makes sense but I think the best tip was in the introduction - how to read a book and take notes.
You Are What You Believe talks about the natural laws and how they can be applied to your life. The natural laws that he talks about in this book are different than the ones in The Ten Natural Laws of Time and Life Management. A great deal of the book discussed your belief window and how that can affect your ability for growth. This gave me much to think about.
