Gin is a burrower. Lucky is a hoarder. Hoarders collect relics. Burrowers steal them. Both groups believe they carry incredible power. Gin’s ma is dying. Gin takes a statue of a man nailed to two pieces of wood, and the burned-out shell of a NYC skyscraper collapses. Both tribes will kill Gin to get the relic back. But the healing power this relic radiates cannot be contained in a statue . . .
Absolutely loved it! Purchased this book at a writers' conference and I'm so glad I did. This story is such a simple tale of Jesus' compassion and care for his children that it touched my heart. I spent an entire night up reading it. The futuristic setting (New York after the Big War) is believable and intriguing, as is the sense of people taking for granted all they had until it was too late, to include their faith. Her characters could be anyone's teens, and I rooted for each one of them to learn what their parents hadn't. Sweet tale. I'm not sure this author knows how good her writing is. I'd be elated to see her work picked up by a professional publisher so the world can meet her.
I did not read the Kindle Edition, but I can not get to the paperback review. Anyway, this is Roberta's second book and it is every bit as exciting as her first. The complex relationships and the vivid descriptions of people and landscapes make the story live. One of my favorite lines come from a comparison of two women with curly hair: the strands were of the same thread. This story includes some mystic moments that seem profoundly believe able when the characters encounter Christ and angels. Read it, young and old, you will be satisfied.
