This was my first ever manga and I think it is not a good choice if you have never read a manga before, which is why I'm not giving it a rating. The multitude of storylines (both fictional and biographical), panels with lyrics and the occasional breaking of the fourth wall left me quite confused and made it somewhat difficult to read. However, the stories were quite interesting, dark, funny and tragic.

This kind of is the kind of stuff I wish reached American bookstores more often, instead of the madness that is the mecha-magical girl-witchcraft soaked weirdness that washes up on our shores. The characters are fun, the stories nearly improvisational in how disorganized and self-aware they are (Fourth-wall's-a-what-now?) and everything is pretty mundane, which is very refreshing. Plus the art style is a messy, sketched-out, nearly inkless semi-realism that doesn't give the girls huge boobs or force everyone to continually stand in too dramatic poses. Akagi even has moles! I'd recommend it.

I checked this out because I liked the cover, but it was just a standard soap opera/teen romance manga, which isn't really my cup of tea.

Cute 90s tomboy style and lovesick guys. Meta jokes about product placement. Class-cutters and pub flirts. Band college kids. Akagi has a BF working abroad but her friend still obviously wants her. The group is tangled in these should-be romances that never took off as kids.

Surprisingly a lot of Chinese items come up—dresses, gifted woks, noodles. The working game is confusing and so is the end a bit. The instant pasta love of the Italian bar slob is quite silly even if intentional. Then it’s kinda dropped too soon. The lyrics are diverse and decent though don’t rhyme in English.

There’s a manga artist storyline—because isn’t there freaking always—and one girl has eyes like the Life manga. I’d probably be confused anyway but somebody tore a pg out of my copy. These are all more tangential than short stories. Still feels cohesive enough to call it just a regular manga, the penultimate ch darkly beautiful, especially the scene at her desk contemplating all the men she’d loved like a montage. The last one felt pointless but funny at points.

Hiroaki Samura clearly had fun creating something else than his long going samurai story. Even if his stories were not good (and the are), they would deserve five stars only for the art. As expected, it's very realistic and with many in-jokes, many of which will be funny only for someone with good orientation in japanese popculture. Thankfully to Dark Horse, we got everything explained in notes at the end of te book. Very good manga deserving its higher price.

A unique manga that is not the normal cup you see on the shelves of bookstores. The art is compelling, the plot is quite interesting to get into, and it is a one-shot. I feel that if Ohikkoshi continued past its one-shot status it would become ruined by extra information that is not needed. It is, in my eyes, perfect being the way it is.

Very weird slice-of-life/romantic comedy series from Hiroaki Samura, who is better known for the samurai gorefest Blade of the Immortal. It's often very funny--the short story about the mangaka is completley insane--but it's not exactly emotionally affecting (which BOTI can be, at its best).

Beautiful art, very funny. Almost every page is rich with tons of visual information and subtle comic details that make it interesting again every time you read it. Comparable to Solanin or H&C, but I personally think it's better.

the story is interesting enough slice-of-life josei fare but read this for the artwork. The artist/author is Hiroaki Samura(blade of the immortal). his sketches especially those centering around humans/the human body are beautifully and intricately drawn.

Nothing at all like "Blade of the Immortal," the other manga Samurai is best known for. A nice way to see how his range is a little broader than that, especially for those of us who can only read his works in English.
