Wow...Yoh's sister Asa is a total bitch. Yep, I'm back to hating her now. She was terrible in the first few volumes and then she got a bit better, but now she's back to her bitchy roots. I don't think I could dislike a character so much. Poor Fumi! I don't know why he puts up with her. She's so self-centered and she's always talking about how cute/wonderful/amazing she is that it makes me want to puke. I can't believe what she put Fumi through this volume. I felt terrible for him, but I was also outraged that he let her treat him like that. I'm not trying to be insensitive, but she kinda got what was coming for her with the rich high school boy. Then, afterwards, the author tried to make Asa's actions ok because of blah blah blah (insert crappy reasons here). There's no excuse for her being such a witch.

Rant aside, I'm not exactly sure where this series is going now. There was the introduction of all these new students, but I'm confused as to what's happening next. I love Haruna and Yoh, but I must admit that the guy that helped her with the boxes was pretty cute!

Okay, I think this cover is hysterical for Haruna ^^, very fitting for Asami.

Some other reviews talk about the series end which should have been volume 6. I don't know, I think we get some really fun stuff afterwards - but then I like Kimi ni Todoke which also explores the fact that just an admission of mutual love is not automatically a HEA.

I REALLY liked the storyline with Yoh having a cold and being nursed by Haruna and then a small vice versa. The best thing was that because Yoh had admitted out loud he loved Haruna, the fact that she's seeing him weak and he's more emotionally open than usual basically leads to her pressing him down on the bed and really wanting to kiss him (although she asks him for permission first, heh) - LIKE A SHOUJO PRINCE FORCING HIS DESIRE ON THE MAIDEN OR THE PRINCE KISSING SNOW-WHITE! A reverse of those typical renai boys, hah! That scene is so cute because they both get nervous and bumble it the first attempt, heee.

It's really clear in this volume that Yoh is much more open to actually talking about his feelings because his trust in Haruna is now unshakeable.

Now the NEXT chapter.... well... it is effective. And also fricking abusive of Fumi. Asami gets impatient because Fumi won't move on her and so she decides to find other boys to play around with. I don't like it because the chapter abuses Fumi and also because Asami agin gets emphasized as a selfish bitch. She knows by now, that Fumi is in her pocket - he's just as direct and one-minded as Haruna so he can't conceive of not loving her, but he doesn't suit her image of a boyfriend, so she starts screwing around. It's probably realistic but it doesn't make for fun reading.

Haruna tries to keep her from destroying the relationship, and that gets Yoh dragged in, too. Fumi does get a lovely scene to show off his out-of-control power state in when he goes on a rampage for Asami and there's a cinematic kiss involved at the end (which Yoh then imitates and completely flattens Haruna with ^^), but the storyline really should have been scrapped. It does NOT lead to any new insights for any of the people involved (well, except that Fumi has a limit? But since he's not used as a character much otherwise...), at least not the main couple.

Aside: There is a fun bit of comedy though, when Asami uses her wiles on Haruna in the same way she does on Fumi, to see if they work (in the correct assumption that Haruna is exactly the same type of person as Fumi in emotional nature) because Fumi doesn't react as expected. And Haruna feels this desperate urge to kiss Asami ^^.

The last chapter leads into Yoh's final year at school and the three new freshmen of whom really only two will add something to the storyline in the following volumes, but who meet Haruna and get interested in her (she helps welcoming the freshmen as a sophomore) - none of their storylines is that great actually, I think.

But there's a lovely bit of realising that since Yoh is more relaxed he's really popular with the freshmen girls and Haruna pledging she'll up her game to be his number one girl, heeheheh. And Yoh deciding they'll cut the whole process short by going home hand in hand, basically declaring themselves.

I recently binge-read High School Debut, Vol. 04 - High School Debut, Vol. 07. I must say that I have been really enjoying this series, but will be moving on from it to other manga for a bit, since I don't have the other volumes out from the library, yet.

Haruna and Yoh are a wonderful couple. Even ex-girlfriends of Yoh's and girls that hate Haruna cannot tear them apart.

Asami is still a beyotch. She always gets in the way, causes trouble, plays victim, or manipulates people into feeling sorry for her or giving her what she wants with no expense to her at all. I still hate her.

Haruna's insecurities are starting to get on my nerves. Enough already! I also didn't care for Asa's actions. I hope that's just a blip and we don't ever see her so selfish and mean again. My least favorite of the series so far. I keep wondering has the storyline run its course? I'll have to read the next one to be sure, but I'm not as excited about it as I have been with previous volumes.

3/19/17 - Just reread this volume and I still have to agree this is a pretty weak volume. I'm glad that the story (or should I say Haruna?) does get better in later volumes.

This volume was "exciting" in a different way than the previous volumes had been. I honestly skimmed a lot of the content with Asa because she was so selfish and hurtful. I really really REALLY disliked her actions.

On the flip side, seeing Yoh open up to Haruna about his feelings towards her was extremely sweet. You can really see how far he has come and how much he genuinely cares for Haruna. I thought the ending was great and how they really are showing others they ARE an actual couple.

I really hope Asa doesn't act like this again because it really zapped my enjoyment for this volume by a lot.

I am writing about the overall series. I finsihed reading the entire series on January 7, 2011.

The overal series was pretty great. I gave it a 4 star rating. Let's talk about some things now.

I. Love. Yoh. I just love him. He is so adorable! Andd I hate that I have to say that. But I can't help myself, he is SO ADORABLE! ANd cool, and awesome, and hot(lol) and all those other wors to descibe him. I love his personality and I love how he is easily embarrassed. He is just so ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!! I want him. And for all of you who think this is creepy(which it kinda is), I tend to fall for awesome fictional male characters. I LOVE YOH. And you would too if you ever read the manga.

Haruna. In the beginning of the manga I thought she was realy, really stupid. REALLY STUPID. And then later on I thought she was realy, really annoying and too much of a perfectionist. In the end, I ended up liking her. Maybe not in the ending because I didn't know my feelings for her in the end. She kinda made me have this weird angry-nice-weird-awkward vibe towards her. Her character is really thought out though. But overall, she's all right.

In the beginning of the book, I thought the whole concept was really kinda dumb. I mean, a love coach. That's just kinda ridiculous and desperate, which Haruna was, but pathetic. Though that whole concept fades later n, it was just really ridiculous. Ri-dic-u-lous. Ridiculous.

THere are many parts that made me laugh or gag when I was reading this manga. Let's look back in my brain and take a moment to laugh at them. HAHAHAHHA! LOL! LAWLS! OMG! OMG! HUH... FUNNY! AHHHAHAHHA LMAO!AHHAHAHH!hhohohohohohoho! omg! HILARIOUS.... Sigh... Huh... Funny.

Overall, the series was really great and funny and entertaining and sweet and sad and I recommend it to everyone I know and don't know. Though, the guys out there might now like it.

P.S. I really hate Assa.
I like Fumi.
I love Asaoka. ♥♥♥

It appears that Yoh has contracted a bad cold while his parents are out of town and Asami is on a date with Fumiya, leaving the responsibility to nurse Yoh back to health up to Haruna! Will Yoh survive her overly-doting ways? And in Yoh's empty house, with only him and her, will those cliched movies in the back of her mind give Haruna some dirty ideas...? Later, Asami grows tired of Fumiya and flirts with all the cute boys she sees and even sets up a group date with them and the girls! Will Haruna be able to help fix another one of Asami and Fumi's relationship problems, or should she leave her nose out of it this time?

I don't have much to say about this volume. It isn't anything spectacular. It's just kind of your average stereotypical new-school-year/filler-episodes-or-chapters manga volume. I did like it though.
P.S. Oh, but, I did really like the chapters about Asami and Fumiya. I'm finding out more and more that I am just like Asami... Oh my God, EXACTLY like her... From her wanting to stir things up sort of moods to her "but is she prettier than me?" or "I want to go too. Bring me and Fumi" moods. OOHHhh... I hope Asami is a popular character. I don't really know. >->;;;;;;
P.P.S. And although I have cheated in all of my relationships once I swear that is behind me! It's something I will never, ever, EVER do again! Like Asami... It was always just to stir things up out of boredom... (except the last time. I was genuinely confused and deeply hurting. I think I wasn't feeling it much with my boyfriend so I glommed onto the guy I liked a while back when he confessed his love for me). OH MY GOD, I FEEL LIKE SUCH SCUM NOW. AAHHHH. I would really love to have a sister like Asami though. owo Only as long as she was drop-dead gorgeous.

this book is about 4 people and they all need dates so they hook up with people and then one guy gets sick and harana needs to watch this guy. She thinks he is hot so she acts all flirty around him. So when he is feeling better haranna leans over and kisses him on the lips and just then her actual boyfriend and best friend walk in they were in so much shock. harrana got up and smiled then ran out the next day in school haranna and Yoh hook up and start dating because haranna needs the help because she really likes this guy then they are caught kissing in this room and they ran again. later on in the book they go to a date party thing. harrana wonders off and mmeets this girl and this girl trys to bust a move on haranna. yoh is just in time and he pushes her off of her and they leave from the party then they had this really crazy talk about there love and how they must take time away from each other.
i can connect this book to my life because i went on this group thing with some of my friends and then my best friend caught his sister maing out with my other friend and then they got into this crazy fight.
i would give this book a 15 but i cant because the rating is only up to 5 so i give this book a 5 because it was a good book and it was really interesting and i learned a little about a different culture.

Asa seems to be acting different than usual and it may have to do with her boyfriend Fumi. What could it mean? That's sweet how Haruna and Yoh care for their friends. Another good ending and of course looking forward to the next volume.

This series follows the main character, Haruna Nagashima, and her quest to find a boyfriend in high school. In junior high, Haruna was the star pitcher of her school's softball team and spent her time outside of practice reading romantic comics. Now that she's in high school, she devotes her time to finding herself a boyfriend ("her high school debut" as she calls it). However, she is completely clueless when it comes to fashion, dating, and boys, so she asks upperclassmen Yoh Komiyama to become her "coach" in these areas. He agrees on one condition: she must not by any circumstances fall for him.

The books consist of Haruna's comical adventures at high school and outside of school with Yoh, his sister, and they're group of friends, along with various other characters who appear throughout the series.

Age: Young Adult Reader (Ages 15-18)
Rating 4 out of 5 stars for:

Art:
The artist has a very defined, unique style that sets her drawing apart from others (you can easily pick out her drawings out of a selection of artists). Not my favorite type of art, as sometimes proportions and anatomy are lacking. However, the artist has an incredibly talent for drawing clothing/accessories and this makes up for it!

Writing:
The story's pacing is straight-forward and plot development is consistent throughout series. Each chapter consists of a smaller stories that seam together to create Haruna's high school experience. The characters Kawahara writes are interesting - they are distinct from one another and personalities interact with one another in a realistic way. Haruna is portrayed as a juxtaposition - loud, hyper, pure, gullible and easily fooled at times, yet also resilient, wise, thoughtful, caring and steadfast loyal. (Most of the characters have these ups and downs to their personalities making them more dimensional). Great, laugh out loud comedy throughout the book, too!

Recommended to mostly older teens who enjoy reading teen romantic-comedy manga.

Literally sprinting my way through this series. I can’t stop!! It’s stuck on my mind because of how fun it is.

The chapter where they take care of each other is so cute, the over-eagerness to help them get better. Also forever laughing at how flustered Yoh gets when his friends call out the fact that he’s being obvious in his affections. Too sweet!!

Asami has such a… we’ll say weird way of showing and expressing that she wants affection. Poor Fumi is just so easy breezy he couldn’t notice much but I’m glad their issues are being covered here to! And that Asami’s actions are clearly shown as wrong to do, despite the good ending. It was nearly much worse!!

I like how themes of insecurity are explored here. And that Haruna, instead of getting incredibly down, is just more motivated to do her best. I want to try to embody that energy more! Her outlook is so good.

Various things happened in this volume. We got to see more of Asami and Fumi's relationship too.
Also Haruna moved to second year and we got introduced to three new freshman who seemed to take an interest in our clueless protagonist- one being obsessed with Yoh...

Also they finally make their relationship official in front of the whole school *-* it was gonna happen sooner or later, I just knew it.

I can't get enough of this manga

ARghhhhh, blarghghhg, Asami please girl. Really, please. If you have a problem, if you are not satisfied TALK TO YOUR BOYFRIEND. Raarrrrgh. Really, why did she feel the need to cheat, go to other guys. It just hurt Fumi, and also your brother, your best friend. I already didn't quite like Asami (due to what she did in the beginning + how she acts), but with this? And all new low.
Also really, why did Haruna practically die because of a kiss? These 2 have been going out for months now. *sighs*
Oh new people at school (hihi at Haruna stabbing them all with that brooch), rival popping up soon (hope not though), new girls vying for Yoh.
Yoh was really sweet though. That ending. Awww, so sweet of him to do that. <3 They are definitely getting closer, PLUS, big PLUS Haruna is getting sweeter, more normal, and less oblivous, yay!

reread: lmao these covers are so ugly but it's fun with overly 'cOoL' 00s outfits. other than that, it really is a cycle of 'oh i don't think i like this plotline'-plot circles to yoh and haruna-'oh i love them so much'. also, i think the author has slight adhd from her side panel stories, maybe this is why she writes haruna so well.

Might take a break from High School Debut but it's still a pretty good series. I can see why it's one of the classics in shoujo manga. However, I am not the target demographic anymore so I'm probably not connecting with these books as much as I would've had I read it in high school!

(Asami sucks. Fumi deserves another girl.)

More of a 3.5 star rating;
Yoh’s sister: Asa is a total ass and Fumi deserves MUCH better than her. Also, I could see Haruna being friends with a few of the first year boys and being their senpai. One of them reminded me of a character in a different shojo manga, which was kinda funny for me.
