at this point there’s too many characters who look too similar and have twenty nicknames each

This is about when the later-year bloat of One Piece got really bad. We've got a lot of fights we need to see, and not all of them even involve Straw Hats. So many characters, so much detail, even more than one flashback - when all I really want is to get to the main meat of things and finally get it done with. Such a bother it is.
Law and Doflamingo's shared flashback isn't much worse than the Skypiea flashback, in terms of how important it is and how much time it takes right before the climax - but I didn't like it nearly as much, for whatever reason. Maybe because it felt even more over-the-top brutal. Maybe because I didn't like the characters as much. Or because I wanted to see Doflamingo get his ass kicked more than Ener? I don't know.
Bartolomeo and Cavendish were the highlight of this volume. They had some really good banter, almost worthy of Zoro and Sanji.

Se termina de contar la historia de Law y Cora-san💕 es la primera vez que la leo y la sentí más acelerada que en el anime, bueno es que en este siempre le ponen más color xd
Luego vienen los enfrentamientos y varios ya empiezan a cerrar, como el de sai con baby 5 y luego con lao g, el gigante con vise, Cavendish en su forma sonámbulo con dellinger, Bartolomeo con el que explota, se me olvida su nombre 😅
Y la con mayor peso en este volumen, la de Franky con el Sr Pink. Me contaron su historia y el duelo de hombres.
Lo último digno de mención fue Leo que rescato a la princesa, tiene una habilidad curativa y Doffy la tenía como plan b para no perder. Se quedó sin su cartita 🤭

ohhh my god Law’s backstory had me in tears

Pretty good arc as we get the origin of Law and how he was involved with corazon and his cure for the disease and a worthy sacrifice and its such an emotional moment then the next thing Oda does well is the multiple fight scenes happening like Luffy fighting Bellamy and Law vs Doflamingo meanwhile another great moment between Don Chin Jao and his son and Baby 5 and then great moment there and the stuff with Bartolomeo sacrificing and protecting Robin which was such a fan moment and then the tragic origin of Senor Pink and his fight with Franky, amazing stuff and just shows Odas ability toinsert emotional backstories during fight scenes and make them more impactful and the art especially the double spreads are insanely good.

Damn this has some of the best side fights of the series so far! I absolutely loved the Lao G fight (could not stop laughing), and I cannot believe Oda made me feels emotional about A GUY DRESSED IN A BABY BIB AND A DIAPER?!

I enjoyed the wrap up of Law’s story! Oda does such a great job with making compelling backgrounds for his characters! The rest of the volume was more fighting. Unfortunately, it hardly focused on the keynote battle and instead focused on a lot of the side POVs. Because of that, I found it to be largely boring for most of the volume.

One Piece is a series I keep reading almost out of obligation. Having already read almost 800 chapters, I feel I should keep reading it despite all of the problems that I've had with this long series. That's not to say that I don't often enjoy One Piece. There have been plenty of moments and arcs that I do enjoy. But, volume 77 was an attempt to give the series another try after taking a break from it, and it didn't really do much to convince me to keep going.
Volume 77 picks up with the flashback of the relationship between Law and Doflamingo's brother, Corazon. After Law and Corazon learn more about each other, they develop a close relationship and Corazon decides to help Law find a cure for his disease. Meanwhile, in the present, the battle in Dressrosa continues (there's really not much to say here, but I'll get to that).
Law's past is tragic, and the way that his relationship with Corazon develops has its emotional beats, but the action scenes in the present don't really do much to compare. Half of the book is ultimately an awkward scramble between various fights. That doesn't mean that development doesn't occur, just that it ultimately isn't handled well. Oda's pacing of One Piece has always been fine, but it is his development and amplification of the various plots and characters that makes this series so long. Sometimes, this works, but Dressrosa, being the longest arc yet, spends a lot of time to develop characters who are (so far and presumably) only important to the current arc, such as the villains.
Volume 77 gives quite a bit of time with flashbacks and dialogue to develop the members of Doflamingo's family and some of the gladiators from the Colosseum, particularly Baby 5 and Senor Pink. Unfortunately, none of this works. Baby 5's development does nothing to deter her character's tendency to fall in love with people and do everything they say (which is annoying at best and misogynistic at worst) and tries to explain it away in an unconvincing way. Senor Pink's backstory is just plain awkward, coming randomly and trying to also give a very serious and tragic explanation to an eccentric character (it explains why he wears baby clothes), doing no better than Baby 5's backstory in being convincing. All of this also just accentuates the awkward dialogue in One Piece (something I have never able to figure out; is it the result of an awkward, literal translation, or Oda's original script is just that bad?), which never flows and feels like real dialogue.
I want to enjoy One Piece more, because it is such a creative series, and at its best it has emotional storylines centered on characters you care about and a deep sense of continuity and foreshadowing. But Volume 77 is not a high point for the series (or Dressrosa, for that matter). Although I will probably continue to read One Piece (I've come this far, and there's always the hope that the character highs of Alabasta and Water 7 can return), but this volume hasn't done much to reignite my interest in the series.

Corazon revealed his devil fruit, Corazon tells Law about the secret of the name of "D", Law tells Corazon about his hometown, Doflamingo learns of Corazon on who he really is, Corazon learns of Vergo and his mission, Law vs Vergo vs Corazon, Doflamingo vs the Barrel Pirates, Doflamingo vs Corazon, Law gets his devil fruit, Tsuru is introduced, Doflamingo's past is shown more, the Colosseum army & the Straw Hats vs the Doflamingo family continues, Rebecca vs Diamante, Kyros vs Diamante, Law vs Doflamingo, Law tells Doflamingo the secret he kept, Luffy vs Bellamy.
I really loved the action in this volume and some of the information that was revealed. Also Oda had killed my heart again.

2025 reread : the end of the Law flashbacks is really really good. And I overall like the fights in this volume. I'm not a big one of Franky's fight in this arc though. I just get bad vibes from Franky here for the first time in the manga and I don't like it.

Während Ruffys Crew und seine Verbündeten aus dem Corrida-Kolosseum es mit den Kommandanten der Don-Quichotte-Family aufgenommen haben, stellt sich Law direkt Don Quichotte de Flamingo und auch Ruffy arbeitet sich vor, um sich dem Samurai im Kampf zu stellen.
"Smile" ist der siebenundsiebzigste Band der One Piece Reihe von Eiichiro Oda.
In diesem Band wird der Rückblick in die Vergangenheit von Trafalgar Law fortgesetzt, was ich wirklich großartig fand. Ich mochte Law schon immer und seine Vergangenheit konnte mich berühren!
Auch Corazon, De Flamingos leiblicher Bruder, ist mir schnell ans Herz gewachsen und so konnte mich dieser Rückblick echt mitreißen und sehr berühren, denn wie so oft ist es kein Rückblick in schöne Zeiten. Aber dennoch zählt dieser zu einem meiner liebsten Rückblicke überhaupt!
Ich fand es dann auch spannend, dass auch die Vergangenheiten von Señor Pink und Baby 5, die ja zur Don-Quichotte-Family gehören, ein wenig stärker beleuchtet wurden, sodass man auch die beiden etwas besser versteht.
Nach dem Rückblick geht es aber wieder direkt ins Getümmel, denn auf Dress Rosa gibt es momentan drei Hauptkriegsschauplätze. Law kämpft gegen Don Quichotte de Flamingo, Ruffy muss sich mit Bellamy auseinandersetzen. Frankie kämpft in der Smile-Fabrik gegen Señor Pink, während Zorro es mit Pica aufnimmt. Und auch Kyros steht mit Diamante einem Ober-Kommandanten gegenüber, aber es gibt noch viele weitere kleine Kämpfe, denn die Don-Quichotte-Family ist gut aufgestellt und viele der Mitglieder haben Teufelskräfte, allerdings sind Ruffys Verbündete aus dem Corrida-Kolosseum auch nicht ohne!
Es passiert richtig viel und so konnte ich auch diesen Band kaum aus der Hand legen!
Ich freue mich schon sehr auf den nächsten Band, denn so langsam steuert auch der Dress Rosa Arc auf sein Finale entgegen und das verspricht spannend zu werden!

After the last volume this felt like a bit of a let down. Sort of feels like Oda Sensei dug himself into a hole by having too many fights with the Don Quixote Pirates to wrap up. And while its interesting that he’s having the various Colosseum fighters repaying their debt to Luffy and thus being the ones to take down the remaining Don Quixote officers, I still don’t care for most of them, while half of the Straw Hats were put on a metaphorical bus to make room for these newcomers. Still, there were some thrilling parts of the fights. I particularly liked Franky (an actual Straw Hat) taking down Senor Pink and Pink actually having a neat backstory for why he’s dressed like a baby. Love the mutual respect between these manly men. I also liked how even Mingo admitted Trafalgar Law had a point about getting Mingo to admit what he did to Dressrosa was a horrific tragedy before maiming Law in a rather unique fashion
Beyond the fights that did work, as expected the rest of Trafalgar Law’s backstory was heartbreakingly tragic as we see his relationship with Doflamingo’s little brother Cora play out. I know the obvious “Don Quixote” reference but as a fan of The Expanse, I love how Cora’s name is Rocinante. Also noteworthy is his motivations for resisting his brother and his growing relationship with Law before its ending. So yeah this did carry the volume a bit before the rest came to drawing out the various fights (even the ones I liked).
Other thoughts of note:
- I really liked the “Naruto” shoutout in Chapter 766! I remember reading both in middle school (those were the days…)
- I guess Oda Sensei was going for a sweet moment by having Kyros refusing to let Rebecca fight alongside him to avenge her mother but it really comes off as patronizing/patriarchal and a waste of Rebecca’s talents (at least Robin is stepping in I suppose).
- I get where Oda Sensei is going with Bellamy but I still don’t quite agree with it. Maybe that’ll change in the next volume.
I’m really going back and forth with this volume’s rating because the parts that worked did work but the rest made it clear how convoluted and drawn out Dressrosa has become. Not horrible but things are getting dragged out and its time to wrap things up.

Rosinante and Law escape from Doflamingo Family with a reason to cure Law's illness. Rosinante can speak and he eats Nagi Nagi no Mi that allows him to make a soundproof barrier and cancel all noises. Rosinante left Doflamingo when his 8 and come back 14 years later. In that period, he was saved by Marine and joined them. Now, he is the spy for the Marine and served directly under Sengoku.
Rosinante got an information about Ope Ope no Mi that can cure all diseases. He then go to Minion Island to steal the fruit from them. Law was forced to eat it. Rosinante heavily injured during his mission. Law trying to find a Marine to help Rosinante and passed an information about Doflamingo to them. But, Vergo, who undercovered as Marine, got the message. Rosinante was beaten by Vergo before Doflamingo killed him instead. Law escaped from that island.
Back at the present, Law's battle getting intense and Doflamingo got the upperhand. Law lose his right arm. Luffy was forced to fight with Bellamy. At the same time, Lao G, Dellinger and Machvise was defeated. Giolla bring the defeated officers to be healed by Princess Mansherry who have the ability to heal anyone. Leo and other Tontatta tribe managed to stop her.
Franky and Senor Pink battle is at the climax. Both of them at their limit. Franky got the upperhand and win the battle. Senor Pink got his flashback on why he wears like a baby. Truly a man!
