A mysterious stranger leaves him marked copies of “A Christmas Carol” as he considers romancing Sonja in Christmas present. Will Louis discern the best choices for Christmas future? Does it include the Poor House, again? Even so—will God bring healing and love to him this year?

‘The Substitute Bride’ sweeps you up in an enchanting, heart-warming novella that gifts the reader with the message that we are never just a substitute, but chosen specifically by God for His joy and purpose. Upon unwrapping this gift, you’ll discover an engaging story where the past and present collide to create a future of love, healing, and hope!
In the town of Shepherd, Michigan, the lovely Sonja Hoeke works as a substitute mail carrier for her father who was recently injured. Even so, her father— a domineering and ornery man—is desperate to get Sonja out from underfoot and married, and threatens to send her away. Thus, when Sonja happens upon a missive sent to her recently deceased friend Cora from a pen-pal named Louis--and discovers a proposal within—she impulsively replies by offering herself as a substitute bride.
Railroad manager Louis Penwell, is on his way to Shepherd to meet his penfriend Cora, hoping to marry her in order to advance within the railroad business. Burdened with the knowledge that she lived at the Poor House—the place of his nightmares—was yet another incentive to marry Cora. How will Louis handle the tragic news when he arrives? And what will his reaction be when he learns that Sonja has offered herself as a substitute bride?
This novella awards the reader with intrigue as our hero Louis receives parcels inscribed with cryptic messages; with drama through the heartless Poor House proprietor; and with a sweet emerging romance. A wonderful cast of characters, including the Reverend Carlton Mathews and his gracious wife Teresa, supplement the endearing heroes of the story. And I always enjoy how author Carrie Fancett Pagels unfailingly enriches her stories with meticulous historic detail... Making it not only informative but delivering an authenticity that ferries you away to another time! It's an honor to highly recommend this book!
Substitute Bride is Novella in the O' Little Town of Christmas Collection. I really felt for Sonja left with a father who wanted her married off. Her one friend dies and she finds these letters to be a mail order bride. Could she pull it off and take her friends place? Her friends have tried to set her up with Louis. But he was leaving on a promotion to where a place he doesn't want to ever return too. A place that held nothing but pain. Can these two find what God has for them? Great novella!! I loved the characters. Just right size of book to sit down with a cup of tea. 5 Star
The Substitute Bride, written by Carrie Facett Pagels, is a sweet story that does mix the long loved A Christmas Carol and A Wonderful Life together to get this beautiful story of love and caring more than what the traditional stories portray. I liked how Ms. Pagels portrays the delightful Sonja in this story. Sonja considers herself a poor choice for marrying material for any man because of her increased age, considering herself a spinster. As the youngest daughter of the mailman of a little village in Michigan, she will do for anyone and always was taught that “Obligations and duty first…” and she took it very seriously because she doesn’t feel herself of any value to anyone. The author then introduces us to Mr. Louis Penwell who is a successful Railroad gentleman that actually spent time in this little village as a child. Unfortunately he had lived in the poor house after he had buried his father that resulted from terrible accident. As a grown man he was the pen pal of a resident of the current poor house. After receiving a promotion with the Railroad, he was told he would be looked on more favorably if he would marry. Not having any other options of the female persuasion, he asked Cora, his pen pal if she would marry him, but he doesn’t know that she is very ill and also has not been totally honest with him in her correspondence. What could possibly happen when Mr. Penwell arrives in this Michigan village to find that the lady whom he had asked to marry him is not alive. What of the past, present and future…The past: he had such heartbreak…The present: he wants a wife and one that he can love and care for, but does he have to settle for just a wife…The future: Can he truly find love? I strongly recommend this short but sweet Christmas read and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the twists within the book that keep you wanting to read and find out what will happen next. I was gifted this book in exchange for my honest review.
I read The Substitute Bride in 1 day and so enjoyed Carrie Fancett Pagels for the 1st time.
Sonja is in a pickle for sure! Her dad has put the word out to the men of Shepherd that Sonja needs to marry and right away. He went so far as to ask a widower friend of hers, a man who could be her grandfather, to propose to her! He even arranged a Postal Service position for her in Mackinac Island, Michigan--north of Shepherd where the temperatures are much colder and she knows 1 family, by name anyway. What is she going to do?!
Sonja's friend, Cora, recently passed on. Cora had lived at the Poor Farm and left no family behind. Because Sonja substitutes at the Postal Service she inherits Cora's mail and discovers a proposal of marriage. On the spot, Sonja replies that she is willing to be the substitute bride and posts the letter to the Dakotas. After all, marriage is preferable to spinsterhood among strangers and she would be moving either way.
Louis returns home to Shepherd against his will because of a promotion within the Railroad. A town where he has terrible memories of his childhood. Louis doesn't know that he will be substituting his workaholism for healing and love in the last place he could ever imagine.
The perfect cozy Christmas read, The Substitute Bride leaves you with hope and a smile. Enjoy!
I won this book from the author in a online party. Thank you Carrie Fancett Pagels and Merry Christmas!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. All thoughts expressed are my own.
The Substitute Bride is a beautifully written short story. I thought it to be quite delightful and fun. My grandmother and her 14 siblings grew up on a Poor Farm with their parents, making me enjoy the historical details added of the Poor House in this book. I thought this novella to be very sweet and romantic. I highly recommend it. 5 plus stars.
In The Substitute Bride, author Carrie Fancett Pagels has written an enchanting holiday story guaranteed to warm the cockles of your heart in spite of the flurry of sparkling, crystalline snowflakes dusting the town of Shepherd, Michigan.
Sonja Hoeke is the substitute mail carrier for her injured father who continuously threatens to kick her out of his home—demanding she find a husband by Christmas. Sonja nervously opens a letter penned to her deceased friend, Cora, from a Mr. Penwell in South Dakota. Not knowing Cora has passed away, Louis Penwell extends a proposal to her—desperately needing a wife for his railroad promotion. Sonja impulsively responds to the letter offering to become a substitute bride, which Louis does not receive because he is en route to his new position in Michigan. Shepherd is the one place Louis had wished never to return, as his past there is filled with haunting memories. But will a strange woman's notes of Christmas past, present, and future...and meeting the lovely Sonja bring healing to his troubled soul?
As always, Carrie Fancett Pagels pens another delightful, heartwarming story of faith, hope, and healing—intertwining A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life! With a compassionate hero and heroine—and endearing secondary characters who will cause your heart to melt despite the scenic white carpet of snow and frosted evergreen trees—the magical sights and scents of Christmas come alive in The Substitute Bride! Shepherd is a real town in Michigan where its townsfolk keep their history alive to this day, and Carrie Fancett Pagels gives us a sweet taste of what it may have been like...in Christmas past.
This was aptly described as a cross between It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol with both themes wonderfully woven throughout this historical Christmas tale. With just the right touch of romance, a whisper of fantasy, a tad of intrigue, and a thread of faith, this sweet little novella is a delightful Christmas read. Both Louis and Sonja are beset by problems from the past that threaten their present, yet a mysterious Christmas angel helps them both discover the promise of the present and the prospects of the future. Enchanting and heartwarming, it's perfect for cozying up before the fire during the Christmas holidays and being swept up in the true Christmas spirit.
This series was developed by a group of Christian authors. I look forward to reading the other novellas in this series.
This short inspirational holiday story is a heartwarming love story. It has its moments of sadness and even tragedy, but they all manage to work together for good in the end, as God intended.
I fell in love with the main characters almost immediately and found myself invested in their love story. Sonja's father, on the other hand, is a real piece of work, and I had a VERY difficult time finding anything to like about him.
The story is full of surprises, for the characters as well as the reader, and most of them will make you smile. It is a great way to begin to get in the holiday spirit.
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.**
A warm Christmas story set in cold Shepherd, Michigan!
The Substitute Bride is a delightful historical romance which brings to life the Christmas spirit in a small town. As a compassionate friend, Sonja Hoeke helps others, often putting her own needs aside. Industrious and honorable Louis Penwell strives to put a difficult past behind him. Some unexpected gifts provide an enjoyable hint of mystery. I loved the sweet final scene—perfect ending to a warm Christmas story!
Favorite quote: Those unexpected gifts, as well as the present time, were to be savored.
(Those interested in history will appreciate the author’s notes included at the back of the book.)
*I won a copy of this novella from the author with no requirement to write a review. This is my honest opinion of this novella.
Carrie has once again created very sweet characters. Both of the main ones, Sonja and Louis, were dealing with hurts from how they had been treated in the past. I was very easily able to empathize with their feelings. It was a joy to see how each of them was able to trust God and worked to move on from their pasts.
I was disappointed by how short this story was. The idea behind it was wonderful and I feel it could very easily have been expanded to become a full length novel. It felt very rushed. This is the only reason that I have given it 4 instead of 5 stars.
The Substitute Bride is a wonderfully sweet story that I read in just over an hour. Needless to say, the storyline kept me turning the pages until the end. I love stories that take place in small towns, makes it more personal and real to me. Carrie is one of my favorite authors and she has yet to disappoint me with her writing. You, too, will enjoy this story about two people brought together in a most remarkable way...I won't go into detail, as not to spoil it for you. Just take my word for it, you will enjoy this lovely book.
I was given a copy of this book by the author. I was under no obligation to give a positive review.
Another reviewer stated it perfectly: "‘The Substitute Bride’ sweeps you up in an enchanting, heart-warming novella that gifts the reader with the message that we are never just a substitute, but chosen specifically by God for His joy and purpose. Upon unwrapping this gift, you’ll discover an engaging story where the past and present collide to create a future of love, healing, and hope!"
The Substitute Bride is a part of the O' Little Town of Christmas collection. This is a short story romance that I enjoyed reading. Will have to read the rest in the collection.
This is a heart-warming story. At first, I felt sorry for Sonja. Her father was trying to marry her off to anyone who would take her. Fortunately, the men in town liked her and would not take advantage of her this way. And then her mom didn’t step in and try to stop it. And her sisters ignored her. But as the story went on, I realized that Sonja was a humble and sweet woman. She was giving of her time and a friend to almost everyone. Then there was Louis, who used to live in this town for a short while and is coming back as a railroad man whose boss is sending him back to this town he never wanted to see again. One person they have in common without realizing it at first a widow named Cora. I don’t want to spoil the story. But go and pick it up and give it a read, you will enjoy their reuniting.
What a heart-warming novella! With a bit of mystery and romance, Author Carrie Fancett Pagels does a wonderful job of helping the reader see that God has a purpose for their life, and man can’t change that.
Taking place in Shepherd, Michigan, this story is full of rich history. I could see how the mail was delivered in that day, and I could see the poor house that so many lived in. While life was difficult, the narrative is full of hope for the future, and healing of hearts. And who doesn’t love a Christmas story? This book will be enjoyed by anyone who likes a light romance, as well as those who are looking for a book with history.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a positive review.
This story could have been a comedy of errors, with Louis proposing to his long-distance pen pal Cora, and with Sonja replying to his proposal after Cora's passing. But upon meeting, they remembered each other from their youth and their good and caring character drew them to each other.
In the short duration of this novella, Louis and Sonja must deal with hurts and insecurities, but their love for each other brought healing. It was easy to like and root for these characters.
This was a quick, pleasant read, which I recommend to readers of Christian historical romance.
I was gifted a copy of this book by the author. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
This story was set in the late 1800's, though it was fiction, some of it was based on true historical places, such as the "poorhouses or "Poor Farms. This was the time before the social services had begun. Actually, there is not much information written about it, in early history books, but what I found, I was intrigued. Over all, this was a great read!
This is an excellent story from start to finish. I really enjoyr re- reading this book especially during the Christmas 🎄 holidays. I enjoyed the characters as well as the story. I love the cover too. I recommend this book to Christian fiction readers who love really good short stories. Many thanks to the creative author!
I really enjoyed this sweet Christmas story. Mrs. Pagels has a writing style that is easy to read and drew me in. I really liked the historical detail and the storyline was very sweet with lovely characters. This was my first book by Mrs. Pagels, but it won't be my last!
I enjoyed this novella by Carrie Fancett Pagels. It was a quick, fun read. I love how the story played out and that Cora's plan to have Louis and Sonja meet came to fruition.
This was a fantastic Christian Christmas Substitute Bride story! The story was believable and the characters were heartwarming! I was able to read a copy of this book via Overdrive, but it did not in any way affect my review. All opinions are my own.
I loved this story about Sonja and Louis. It had all the feel good of a Christmas story with touches of A Christmas Carol and a mysterious benefactor. I would recommend this book.
"I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach." - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
Shepherd, Michigan ~ November 1891 Long shadows fell as Sonja Hoeke concluded her father's rural mail carrier route. Filling in for him as the substitute carrier, Sonja has just left Mr. Welling's house, after the long, winding, unyielding rutted road leading to the Poor Farm overseen by grouchy Mrs. Geisig. With Mr. Welling's passing, there no longer was a near neighbor to keep an eye on upkeep and care of the inmates. His daughter-in-law was visiting from Mackinac Island clearing out the house and preparing it for winter.
Sonja had so much on her mind following the passing of her friend, Cora. Just that day Cora had received a letter of proposal from her longtime correspondent, Mr. Penwell, who worked for the railroad in South Dakota. He as yet did not know of the demise of his intended. The postmaster had approved her opening the mail Cora received to be able to inform him.
Sonja's father has proclaimed that his daughter was to be out of his house by Christmas ~ married to whomever he chose, or shipped off as an apprentice substitute mail carrier elsewhere. Mulling over whether this would be her future, could she stand in the place as the substitute bride for Mr. Penwell? Mr. Penwell had declared that he had received a promotion that was better served by a man with a wife.
There are more surprises ahead for Louis Smith Penwell. His promotion is not where he is, but back in his hometown he hoped he would never return to. Long ago called Salt River, after the town burned it was rebuilt with brick and named after the chief benefactor, a Mr. Shepherd. No matter the name change, the people and the County Farm would still be there. There would be those who had known him as Louis Smith, the son of a former gambling man who hadn't used his last name. Becoming an orphan, Louis had no relatives to take him in. And now Mr. Welling, the near neighbor, had passed too. Nothing for him to come home to ~ except a new beginning with Cora.
I liked how this story wove together with thoughts from each of them. Sonja, wondering how she was going to survive, and Louis who had remembered seeing her at school in their teens. The beautiful story of healing for each of them as they honored one another, going beyond their treatment by others. There is a twist in the story I won't mention; a weaving together of love.
***Thank you to author Carrie Fancett Pagels for inviting me to be part of the review tour for her novella in the O' Little Town of Christmas Collection, and sending me a review copy of The Substitute Bride. This review was written in my own words. No other compensation was received.***
The Substitute Bride***** by Carrie Fancett Pagels
A female mail carrier is not the norm in 1891 Shepherd, Michigan, but Sonja Hoeke steps in as a substitute for her father's route while he recovers from an injury. While gathering the days mail to deliver from Mr. McLaughlin, the postmaster, she finds a letter addressed to her best friend, Cora, who recently died. Since Cora has no family, she opens the letter and learns that Cora's pen-pal, Louis, has asked her to marry him. Unsure what to do, she hurriedly writes a note to Lois informing him of Cora's death and offering to be a substitute bride in Cora's place. Will he accept her offer? Can she really marry a man she has never met? If it is up to her father, she will marry elderly Mr. Akers or some other man—any man—who will take his spinster daughter off his hands and out of his home. What are God's plans for her?
Louis Smith Penwell has been offered a new, elevated position with the railroad. He assumes the new position would be in South Dakota where he lives and is shocked and dismayed when he learns it is in the one place he vowed never to visit again—Shepherd, Michigan. He has nothing and no one in Shepherd except his pen-pal, Cora. How can he return and live in a place that holds such hurtful memories? With God's help and strength he will strive to put the past behind him.
This is a delightful, fun story full of characters that will tug on your heart and some who will cause disbelief and frustration. Sonja and Louis were soon my favorite characters. Despite Sonja's problems at home, she has a heart of compassion and love for others. I love how she stands up for the less fortunate, helping out when needed. There is more than one surprise in store for both Louis and Sonja that will change their lives in a far different way than they ever imagined. The poor that “live” at the Poor House are not treated well at all by Iris Geisig, the director. I wanted to show her the door and tell her not to come back. I could not believe the way Sonja's father treated her, breaking Sonja's heart over and over. We get a glimpse of how forgiveness of others, our past hurts and heartaches—and even ourselves—is freeing, taking those burdens off our shoulders. Humor, unexpected surprises, grieving hearts, restitution, romance, faith and love are woven together in such a way to keep the reader's attention to the end. There is a very mysterious woman that plays a big part in the story—not telling how.
~I received an advanced PDF copy of this book from the author for my honest review~
This is a novella! I can't believe it. Carrie has packed so much "punch" in this short novel. It's historical fiction at its best, providing a little bit of history, a little bit of romance and a plot that captivates you.
In terms of history, I've always been fascinated with our nation's expansion of the rail lines since the 19th century, and the history of our postal system. I love how intricately Carrie provides readers with details of the postal and telegram connections, and the growth of it as the railways are becoming more frequent. Love this photo on the right of the train depot in Shepherd, MI, the setting of The Substitute Bride. I grabbed it from Overcoming With God blog, also administrated by Carrie. I remember visiting the National Postal Museum in Washington DC, and was enthralled by how postal carriers dressed and delivered mail and packages. Back in the day, even with train, mail would be held at a depot or general store with a "mail post", and only around the 1880s were mail delivered. Like our heroine Sonja, many mail carriers carried mail in a bag and/or on a horse/buggy and delivered along a route. I've visualized something along the lines of these images. What do you think?
This is what I love about The Substitute Bride. It opened my mind and almost like it turned on the curiosity switch to look further and imagine what it would be like to be there, and witness how it is in Sheperd, MI, seeing the people and the Poor Farm.
Back to the story, I enjoyed every bit of the plot and theme behind The Substitute Bride. God has chosen us even before we knew Him and as it is with this story, we are no one's substitute. Sonja had believed that she will only be a substitute, but God had other plans, and so had her friends. Time and time again, we see that God is a God of coincidences and one must know that every event happens for a reason. We see God's perfect hand in this lovely story of bringing two people with a past or even present that burdens them. A wonderful story depicting not only man's selfishness, but the beauty of one's soul and the generosity of one's heart. Love and enjoy this story of compassion and God's perfect timing this holiday season.
NOTE: I won a complimentary e-copy of this book at an event and a review was NOT required.
The Substitute Bride by Carrie Fancett Pagels is a perfectly delightful novella set in 1890's Shepherd, Michigan. It is a wonderful read for a cold winter's day. Sonja is the last remaining unmarried daughter, whom her father has threatened to turn out by Christmas if she remains unwed. Sonja has no intention of marrying just anyone and is seeking employment elsewhere when an unusual opportunity arises. Louis Penwell spent a miserable year in his young life in the poor farm in Shepherd. He has no intention of ever returning there again. However his railroad employers have other plans. The novella shows how important it is to remain obedient to God and to listen for His voice in life. Louis's father was saved at the church in Shepherd so there are good and bad memories associated with the town. The story shows how our earthly fathers may disappoint us and let us down but God never will. A major theme is that of taking care of the poor. The poor farm in the novella is similar to the work house in England where only the very poor and destitute go. The person in charge is a dreadful penny pinching woman. The poor are badly treated but Sonja has a heart for them. She is prepared to risk her health and her reputation to be God's hands and feet to the poor. God is always looking out for us. The novel reveals that even if we don't see Him, hear Him or recognise Him, God is still there, working on our behalf. Once our eyes are opened to Him, He becomes visible in past events, the present and one will know His hand is on our future. Forgiveness is another theme within The Substitute Bride. When bad things happen, it is tempting to withhold forgiveness, however we will suffer. Until forgiveness happens, one is forever trapped in the past with no hope of moving forwards. Forgiveness must be given in order to release the chains of the past. I really enjoyed The Substitute Bride and eagerly devoured it. Carrie Fancett Pagels novels are always delightful and heart warming. She writes in such a way that the novels come alive in my head and I live through the action.
