“A violent shudder travelled up my spine, each vertebrae snapping together like a zip lock, all my muscles tensed but I couldn’t tear myself away from the image …”
If your shadow was trying to consume you, how would you run from it?
What if you were afraid of something you could never escape?
Selena Parker’s journey into the unknown begins in her dreams, but the consequences are carried back into her conscious life and she soon realises paranormal forces are at work. Her shadow has become more than just an image, it is a gateway to a sinister new world where mysterious creatures roam and she is confronted by danger that challenges her will to survive. She finds the man whose fate is linked inexplicably to her own but she knows nothing of him and doubts his true nature. Her only option is to place her life in his hands while they search for a way to stop the shadows claiming them forever.
Anna Hub is a paranormal/thriller author from Perth, Western Australia. She qualified as a nurse in her early twenties but in 2007, decided to chase her childhood dream of becoming an author instead. Since then, she's surrendered her heart and soul to writing.
Although terrified of horror movies, Anna loves to write on the dark side and explore uncharted mythologies. She believes our imaginations are infinite and inside the pages of a book, there is no limit, no exact destination and our minds are free to exist in many worlds.
This is something which is going to give you chills till the very last pages. Beyond the Shadows by Anna Hub is going to scare your guts out and keep you thrilled till the very end. And as quoted by the author Louisa May Alcott that "Some people seemed to get all sunshine, and some all shadow…", similarly, Selena Parker's life in Beyond the Shadowsis haunted by only shadows and how she learns to hide herself from her very own shadows.
A huge thanks to the author, Anna Hub, for sending me over a copy of her book, in return for an honest and unbiased review.
Selena Parker is a normal woman with a very normal life, until she is warned by a man in a restaurant to watch out from her shadows. Evidently, she doesn't pay any heed to him. But when Selena blacks out several times, during which she found herself in a scary Shadow world, she searches for the man who had warned her beforehand, only to find him comatose in a mental hospital. When the man wakes up, he tells her that she is going to be soon consumed by her own shadows and in her real-life, she, too is going to end up in that mental hospital. Eventually, Selena falls permanently into that deadly jungle which constitutes the shadow world. The jungle is worst than any real-world jungles, it has got fatal animals and creatures, which is surely going to give you an eerie feeling! Soon Selena starts searching for that man named, Brayden and together they try to search for other survivors in a near-by village.
The story-telling of the author is really very eloquent and expressive, since she has managed to bring out every scene so vividly in front of our eyes, thus giving you a creepy feeling all throughout the book. The characters are well-developed, especially Selena is very determined and firm on her journey and moreover, we can relate to her and Brayden, being the caring one.
The first-half of the book shows how Selena is fighting hard to keep herself in her real-life and never ever giving up the challenges thrown in her path. The second half shows her to be very weak and fragile, which reminds me of Bella in Twilight, since she needed Brayden to do everything for her. The only disadvantage of the book is that it ends with a very bad cliffhanger (I hate cliffhangers!!) and I'm certainly vouching for the sequel of this book.
Hats off to the author's imagination power for representing this Shadow world so distinctly and strongly and also making it horrifying and spooky in each and every turn.
If you want your chills running down your spine, then definitely read this book, which in spite of being scary, it's going to hook you till the very end!
PS: If you don't want to get scared very badly, then read this book in the bright daylight!!
What would happen if your shadow was trying to consume you? Selena Parker is about to find out...
Selena is leading a normal life until a man in a restaurant tells her to watch her shadow. Dismissing his concerns at first, she comes to realise it's moving and shifting on its own. She places a hand on it, and falls through to a primitive jungle world, then again and again, each time spending less time in the real world.
Selena's responses are entirely realistic when she realises she can fall through her shadow. She dims the lights and researches mental illness, wondering if she's going quietly mad while she tries to continue her normal life. She quickly comes to realise that even the dimmest lights cause shadows though, and knows she can't fight back against it.
It doesn't stop her fight though; Selena is an adaptable character who refuses to accept the inevitability of the jumps to and from the jungle. And when she's forced to accept the reality of what's happening to her, she adapts again. She learns how to survive in the wilderness, what berries and bugs are edible and how to make a fire. She tries to warn her family what will happen to her. When she is finally, irrevocably trapped in the jungle, she shifts her focus, trying not to linger on the family and life she'll never see again.
In the jungle she meets Braydon – the man who first warned her of the shadows – who seems to have given up on 'normal' life quicker than her and settled to life in the jungle. Braydon begins to exhibit signs of being a 'Hunter', a semi-supernatural human with enhanced strength, agility and senses. Together they move out of the dense jungle and towards a settlement of humans who are also trapped at the edges of the jungle.
It's a great concept for a story...how can you hide from your own shadow? And it was that which pulled me through the first half of the book. Selena's attempts to keep up a normal life and her resourcefulness when it came to researching survival techniques and tracking down a comatose Braydon drew me to the character. I loved the way she dealt with the things life was throwing at her and got on with it. There isn't a moment when she gives up.
I liked the world of the book as well, the way that distances 'over there' equate to distance 'over here'. Her upstairs bedroom is on a rock; her living room is a cave under that rock. It's all logical and consistent. What was missing was a full sensory experience: I wanted to know what that jungle smelled like and the assault of the colours on her eyes. Was the sky blue over there?
Where the book starts to lose a little of its power is with Braydon. I found him to be two-dimensional next to Selena, and I had the impression that if Selena could have found another guide in the jungle, she probably would have. Partly, he's such a foil for her it's hard to empathise with him; he's quite negative to Selena's optimism. There didn't seem to be much chemistry between them beyond the basic need to survive and share body heat.
The antagonists of the book – The Hunters – don't make much of an appearance either. We're only told what they are capable of and don't see them in action much – one anonymous woman being chased, that's about it. The main threat in the jungle is the remarkable cats with whip-tails, which is danger enough without the Hunters being there.
What also didn't work for me was the transition from jungle to village of survivors. From being adaptable and resourceful, Selena seemed suddenly powerless when she was there, becoming quite passive and weak. The village transition takes place about half-way through the book, and from then on, Selena seemed almost a secondary character in her own story.
The book needed a few more edits. There are a lot of run on sentences (the author told me she grimaces over them now too), but it seemed to suit the narrative voice of Selena.
For a first novel, this was pretty good. A nice concept with the shadow-portals and a strong (for the most part) main character and a consistent world.
I love urban fantasy and this didn't disappoint! An original story with well developed characters and great pacing. I recommend this book and will definitely be reading the others in the series.
“What if your shadow was the gateway to a sinister new world?” What if, indeed. Anna Hub will tell you. Just read Beyond the Shadows: Second Edition (The Shadow Series Book 1). It’s freaky but wow is it well done. Selena is s fantastic leading lady and this author uses her to the max. Great plot, great (and really imaginative) world building and great characters. Boy oh boy am I happy I read this one. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
The concept of this story was different. What would you do if your shadow took you to a dangerous world?
Selena is plagued by nightmares. Then one day, her dreams become reality. Selena is a likable caring character. When facing possible death, her only concern is how it will affect her father. Her only hope of surviving this new world is Brandon, another person going through the same horror.
I liked this book. It is the first in a series, and I will definitely be reading book 2 soon.
Anna Hub has created a compelling and original tale. I found the main characters, Selena and Branden, to be really well developed and caring (especially Selena) characters who survive some really incredible situations. The tale grabs you from page 1 and keeps you reading until the end. I am looking forward to reading Shadow Hunter, book 2. Anna Hub is truly a very talented author. I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest review.
The concept of the 'shadow' was intriguing and led to an alternative world...I always like that.
The characters suited the story, there was logic between both worlds. The 'cat' enemies were imaginative though the hunters as yet have not been developed.
The writing style was easy to read and fast-paced, however, further descriptions may have enhanced the senses.
This book started out slow to me. That quickly changed and I couldn't read fast enough to find out what was going to happen next. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
A free digital copy of this book was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review
I’ve been really terrified of alternate universes ever since I watched the movie, Insidious. Then I tried lucid dreaming, and the results were far from pretty. The same can be said for Beyond the Shadows and to make it worse, I read this from 8 pm onwards. Just to reiterate; worst. Idea. Ever.
Beyond the Shadows deals with a scary alternate world filed with deadly hunters and even deadlier cats. To reach this world, a person must be pulled in by their own shadow, and that’s exactly what happened to our main character, Selena. For most of the book, I didn’t like Selena at all. She was a very weak character with absolutely zero development. I fully expected her to mature as she spent longer periods of time stuck in the Shadowlands, but that wasn’t the case. She did redeem herself slightly during the trial but this part happened in the final chapters. Another thing that I really disliked about Selena’s character was how she couldn’t take care of herself. She always had to have Brayden feed, save and protect her. I could understand why she behaved this way during the first few couple of times she was at the Shadowlands but as the book progressed, there was no justification for her actions at all.
Selena meets a man named Brayden in the Shadowlands. Having lost the will to live, he is content with barely surviving in this barbaric environment. Unlike our female protagonist, Brayden had a complex personna and he was very much capable of surviving on his own. He could fight the hunters and the cats, which Selena couldn’t do. I think the only thing that Selena did while Brayden fought for their lives was stand/sit shell-shocked. The more the plot developed, the more you could see how different Selena and Brayden were. While Selena could often be found crying and shaking, Brayden put his will to survive above all else, including his emotions. I really liked his character and if it weren’t for him, I probably would have put the book down in irritation at Selena’s antics.
Pace-wise, Beyond the Shadows moved too slowly for my taste. It was too lengthy with a lot of unneeded scenes. I definitely thought the book took too long with the exposition. The writing style also needed a bit of improvement since I found that the sentences tended to run in together in my mind because of the lack of punctuation. It was in dire need of commas and frequent pauses because sentences which should have had commas were left to do without.
Because of the length of the book, I honestly thought some questions would be addressed but it ended on a cliffhanger [not happy about that] with more questions than I had originally started the book with. Hopefully, these will all be resolved in the sequel.
Beyond the Shadows was a terrifying reading experience especially since I read this at night with my lamp casting creepy shadows on the wall. I can’t really say that it was well-written but as far as the plot and world build-up, I was definitely awed by the lengths the author’s imagination went. Thank you so much to Anna for sending me the sequel, Shadow Hunters, because I can’t wait to see if Selena actually matures this time.
This is the first book I've read from the author and the debut novel of a brilliant new talent in urban fantasy, Anna Hub.
Ms. Hub has created an amazing premise for a story, something truly unique and the depth of her world building was quite distinctive and truly fascinating. Obviously a great deal of thought had gone into what could happen to her characters and how they would relate to the environment they were thrust into with no control over what happens to them.
Selena Parker is experiencing haunting nightmares, and thinks what is happening is all a figment of her imagination until she is warned by a guy in a restaurant to be wary of her shadow. What follows is an engrossing, frightening and wild rollercoaster ride of a story as Selena discovers what she's been warned about is true and her shadow has taken on a frightening new dimension in her life. She blacks out regularly and finds herself transported (painfully) to the 'Shadowlands' a scary, almost prehistoric world filled with danger. Each time Selene is transported, she faces wild creatures and gray-eyed hunters, who are determined to kill her.
Selena discovers the man from the restaurant, Brayden, is also being transported to the Shadowlands, but because it has been happening to him for a longer period of time, he is spending much longer periods there. With no way of explaining what is happening to him, Brayden has been committed to a mental institution by his family and this is where Selena goes to seek answers.
Selena is shocked and terrified to realize that her fate will lead down the same path as Brayden's has, and eventually, she will be permanently trapped in the Shadowlands. Selena does everything in her power in the meantime to learn as much as possible in the 'real' world, to help herself and Brayden survive in the Shadowlands.
Ms. Hub's first book is a beautifully written and highly thought-provoking 'what if' scenario. I found myself engrossed in the story, enjoying the very thorough descriptions of the world Selena found herself in, and her emotional and psychological reactions to her troubles was both realistic and very natural. Ms. Hub has done an excellent job of giving us characters we can enjoy, cheer for and chew our nails over as they deal with the strange new world they've been thrown into. There are some quite frightening parts, and Ms. Hub has done a beautiful job of tension building and allowing the reader to become engrossed in the plot.
There are some issues with dialogue and language which are not uncommon in a debut novel, but overall, this book is highly recommended. I should warn readers - this is a series of four books and the first book ends on a cliffhanger - but I was very happy to continue reading and have already commenced the second book in the series, as I'm invested in what happens to the central characters.
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.
Firstly I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this book.
I really enjoyed this book a lot and the loved the concept very much, well if by love you mean getting scared of my own shadow!!!
This book is full of descriptive scenes that you'll feel like the chilling and horrific incidents are happening in front of your own eyes and that was really a great experience for me after a very long time. The writing style of the author is unique yet super comfy and I didn't feel like deciphering Hebrew language like sometimes it happens with the other paranormal genre books.
The characters were great and the portrayal of their emotions - fear, confusion, desperation, pain, etc, was so brilliant that I instantly fell in love with the characters. They just made me a part of their difficult journey and I went on with the flow.
The suspense is really chilling in here and the twits were good and unpredictable and mostly they just took me by surprise at the end.
Over all a great read and I would highly recommend it to others as well.
Selena's world is about to change. She meets a man at a restaurant that warns her about the shadows. She doesn't understand his warning until she "blacks out" several times. Each time she finds herself in a strange and dangerous world. Selena begins to search for the man. She eventually finds him in a mental hospital. When he wakes, he warns her not to tell anybody what is happening to her or she'll be admitted too.
Selena and Brayden join forces in Shadowland to survive. Can they find other people besides the hunters? Is there a place for them to live in safety?
Shadowland is full of strange and dangerous animals too. Selena and Brayden have to constantly be alert to danger.
I enjoyed reading this book. It could use some editing. Wrong words were used in several places. I wanted more at the ending. The book really leaves you hanging. I would like to read the next book.
Intriguing story of Selena whose shadow seems to have a life of its own, sucking her into a secret and dangerous world whenever she least expects it. I love the originality of this story. I read a lot of paranormal and I haven't found anything like this. The main character is likeable and you feel a lot of sympathy for her, especially in relation to her grief over what's happening to her and the way it affects her family. The action is continuous and unpredictable. The main male character Brayden is also a complex, interesting character - right up until the last couple of chapters I wasn't sure which way Brayden was inclined: good or evil. I'm intrigued to know where this is going. Looking forward to book 2.
This was a new genre for me and I absolutely loved it. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. The quality of the writing stood out for me - will attempt to read more books outside my comfort zone in future.
very interesting read!! different, not like anything I have actually read before...i am looking forward to getting the next book and reading what happens next!!!
As scary as you can get, don't read at night unless you can stay up to finish. Imagine your shadow want to absorb you. Fantastic read that gave me the pleasure to review
