Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza was a 19th century Spanish novelist, author of the novel El Sombrero de Tres Picos (The Three-Cornered Hat, 1874). The story is an adaptation of a popular tradition and provides a lively picture of village life in Alarcón's native region of Andalusia. It was the basis for Hugo Wolf's opera Der Corregidor (1897) and Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (1919).
Alarcón wrote another popular short novel, El capitán Veneno ('Captain Poison', 1881). He produced four other full-length novels. One of these novels, El escándalo ('The Scandal', 1875), became noted for its keen psychological insights. Alarcón also wrote three travel books and many short stories and essays.
Alarcón was born in Guadix, near Granada. In 1859, he served in a Spanish military operation in Morocco. He gained his first literary recognition with A Witness' Diary of the African War (1859-1860), a patriotic account of the campaign.

ENGLISH: This nice short story could well be the argument of a zarzuela.

Not the best I’ve read from Alarcon, but still a very enjoyable book. Granted, one must keep in mind that it was written during the second half of the 1800s, so a bit more conservative than we’re used to, but still an enjoyable read.

Published in 1881, I could not help but compare the story to Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Screw", however the roles are hereto reversed. In Alarcon's story the Screw is an ill-tempered and ill-mannered captain, who after being wounded in battle is rescued and cared for by three ladies (mother, daughter and servant). Veneno (translated as Poison) is the name he fosters for his acerbic tongue and bad manners. His temperament however moderates during his convalescence, and eventually, as in the Shakespeare's tale, his heart is won, this time by the beautiful and patient daughter of his hostess. It is a great tale and I found it incredibly humorous. I recommend it to those ready to traverse old world Spanish.

This could only be a better book if I understood everything perfectly, but I don´t believe Alarcon could have written it any better.

For the first time reading a story in a foreign language, I understood enough to have to stop and laugh my ass off. A few parts of the book were sad, some upsetting, but nothing ever reached as far as depressing and on the whole Capitan Veneno was a treat to read.

As the last book I read from Alarcon, El Sombrero de Trest Picos, was much like Othello, it was entertaining to find that this book was much like The Taming of the Shrew, though with role reversal.

I felt really close to the main character and even when the story is short, I really enjoyed it
