When Rock and Caroline are forced to leave The Waste and seek safety across the mysterious Wall-without-Walls they could never have expected their discovery… or the consequences which would follow. The old world with its knowledge is not as lost as many have believed. But, is technological advancement alone enough to bring peace? As long-hidden secrets about Rock’s past are revealed, both he and Caroline are more determined than ever to help save the tribes of The Waste. However, with an unknown people to convince, new technology to comprehend, and new enemies to outwit, the quest to find an ally in the war against the Vorin may be as unlikely as ever. But it must go on.
Read the first book and started this one with...doubts. It's just so inconsistent. Honestly, I picked up this series to hear more about the enemy and they are barely there! Add in that the author keeps bouncing between numbers and quantity and somehow there's always more of the baddies. Oh, there's ten around the house, but they escape and now they are crossing a short bridge but there are too many of that same party of ten to stop them with our bullets. You shoot down one and there's, like, five more right after. Drama, drama, drama, infinite bullets except to add drama.
I just...wasn't getting enough of what I wanted to make up for that silliness. Add in the Hallwell's hamfisted romance between Caroline and Rok(sp?) and...yeah...I've read better post apocalyptic work.
Oh, how I fell in love with Razor Wire. But Book 2 was an incredible waste of my time and credit.
We’re following Rock and Caroline as they meet the inhabitants who live beyond the wall without walls.
So then we learn, with Caroline, about OUR world and history. Cars, history, etc. It was nails-across-a-chalkboard- boring and unimaginative.
It has completely lost its focus and tone. I no longer care about Solace, Rock, or Caroline. Even their personality is completely different from Book 1. Caroline’s more than Rock.
I can’t believe I was so excited to listen to this. I almost feel like knocking stars off the first one, just because it led to this.
I’m quitting the series and hope I never come across it again.
I was so happy to be able to read the continuation of the story straight away. In my opinion book 2 is a significant improvement from book 1, plus the change of pace of the world-building and the abundance of new details are welcoming. What would book 3 be like? Hopefully not a disappointment!
Rock and Caroline continue their mission, to pass the Wall Without Walls and find help for the people of the Waste against the invading Vorin horsepeople. They're not sure what to expect once they pass through the danger zone, but what they find is the city of Solace, a Romanesque society who still have access to technology. Threatened with a one-way trip to the mines, they are temporarily spared when it is found that they hold the identity disks which make them part of the Solace elite. But our two intrepid adventurers are forced to navigate a very different society fraught with hidden dangers.
There was a lot more world building in this second book, with the discovery of the huge and complex Solace society. Vastly different from the Waste, this was more Roman epic than Western, and there was very little hint of the whole post-apocalyptic side of things this time. The adventure side of the story moves along at a good clip, as Rock and Caroline get caught up in political machinations and rivalries. Again, a fun read. Let's see what happens in the next book.
First book interesting mysterious, no longer. Story Has gotten lost in the world building. Feels like it was the end of the world but then our mom's pulled up in minivans catching us at pretend, ala Futurama in LA. We have looked beyond the curtain to find a fake in stead of a wizard.
Interesting book to read. There are interesting characters, action aplenty, intriguing situations, a budding romance, and hopefully a complete resolution. There's also several cliff-hangers and plot twists. A good book to spend a couple of hours with.
