Mandakranta Sen Born on 15 September 1972 in Tollygunge, Kolkata, she studied Medicine in Nilratan Sirkar Medical College during 1991-1997, but quit amidst the final MBBS Examinations. Having begun writing at an early age, she has left her mark in all genres - poetry, novel, short story, verse, drama, articles and essays.
Her published works are: Hriday Abadhya Meye (1999), Balo Anya Bhabe (2000), Chhadma Puran, Utsarito Alo (2001), Esabe-I Rater Chinha, kashbhara Bandhutara (2002), Barshaphalake Gantha Har, Kavya Sangraha (2004 all poetry including one verse drama), Jhanpatal (2000), Dalchhut (2002), Sahabasthan (2003), Rituchakra, Andhakar Samudrer Niche (2004 all novels) and Galper Boi (2001, a collection of short stories). Andhi Chhalang has been translated and published in Hindi. She also translates poetry from English and Hindi. Her works have been translated into English and Hindi. She is winner of the prestigious Ananda Puraskar (1999), Akash Bangla Barsha Samman (2002) and Krittibas Puraskar (2003).

The angst of a woman is the most dominant theme of the poetry of Mandakranta Sen. Her poems are quite frank in tone and tenor and the reader can very well decipher the anger that inevitably seeps in at the poet's realization of and identification with historically marginalized gender. The opening lines of her poem 'Offering', underline this characteristic of her poetry quite effectively: Not even a grain of salt, you only have your wish/ Cook with your tears, girl, tear is also saltish/ Make a full course of menu, a full course of suffering/Sour dream, sweet envy, oh please don't miss a thing! For Sen, the continuing marginalization of women in one form or the other in the onsumerist society is a concern that permeates her poetry.

মন্দাক্রান্তার কবিতারা অস্বস্তি—জাগানিয়া—রকমের জীবন্ত, একটা অন্ধকার গোপন মেঘ যেন ভর করে থাকে আগের পরের দুই লাইনের মাঝখানে শাদা জায়গায়। তিনি যখন লিখছেন:

"আমরা বৃষ্টিতে ভিজব সেইসব পাতালঘরের উঠোনে
যেখানে বিগতবয়সিনী বেশ্যার উকুন বেছে দেয়
দয়ালু দালাল
কিছু ফুল আছে যার পাপড়ি ছিঁড়ে না ডললে গন্ধ পাওয়া যায় না
সেই নিষিক্ত গন্ধের ভেতর, পাতালঘরের দরজায়
আমরা দাঁড়িয়ে থাকব ঠিকানাবিহীন
দালালের জাবদা খাতায় নাম লেখানোর অপেক্ষায়
বেশ্যার মৃত্যু আছে দালালের নেই
পিঁপড়ের খাদ্যের মতো আমরা মধু বয়ে নিয়ে যাব
স্তনে ও যোনিতে
আর ঠোঁটে নিয়ে যাব মুখখিস্তি
দালাল আমাদের টিপে দেখবে, বাজিয়ে শুনবে
তারপর আমরা নির্ঘাৎ জায়গা পাব
নিক্ষিপ্ত হব লিঙ্গের খপ্পরে
বয়সিনী বেশ্যার চুল থেকে চুলে বয়ে নিয়ে যাব
উকুনের বংশপরম্পরা।"

তখন ‘বেশ্যার মৃত্যু আছে দালালের নেই’ উপলব্ধিটা আমাকে কোন কারণে ভীষণ আন্দোলিত করে। ‘কিছু ফুল আছে যার পাপড়ি ছিঁড়ে না ডললে গন্ধ পাওয়া যায় না' রূপকটারে অনিচ্ছাসত্ত্বেও বুকপকেটে নিয়ে আমি কয়েকদিন ঘুরি, অস্বীকার করতে পারি না। বিপরীতভাবে, তিনি যখন লিখলেন:

"এমন পবিত্র আমি আগে কি ছিলাম কোনওদিন!

আসলে, দেখিনি আগে এই গুটিশুটি শুয়ে থাকা।
গলা অবধি ঢাকা দেওয়া। ফুটে আছে ঘুমে ভাসা মুখ।
হাতদুটি জড়ো করা চিবুকের কাছে।

সযত্নে শিয়রে বসি। কপালে আঙুল রাখি ধীরে।
একটু একটু করে ঠিক স'রে যায় ঘুমের ঝালর।
এমন আশ্চর্য হাসো,
ঐ হাসি হেসে গেছে আদিতম মানবশিশুরা;
আজও যে হাসিটি হাসলে তবে পৃথিবীতে ভোর হয়।
আমি সে ভোরের সামনে শান্তহাতে পেতে রাখি
ছোটোখাটো সহজ প্রার্থনা...

এমন পবিত্র আমি ছিলাম না বহু বহু দিন।"

সেই পবিত্রতার শুদ্ধবোধে মনে হয় ভাগ পাচ্ছি আমিও!

সেন সাহেবান তার সকল কবিতায় এই অনুভূতিগুলোকে সুচারুভাবে সাজাতে পারেন নি অবশ্য। অধিকাংশ ছন্দকবিতাই তুলনামূলকভাবে দুর্বল লাগল। কিন্তু যখন দেখবেন অনেকগুলো পাতা পার করার পর হঠাৎ করে শব্দে শব্দে সুষম বিক্রিয়া ঘটছে, একটা কবিতা হঠাৎ উত্থিত হচ্ছে বিশ্বসাহিত্যের পর্যায়ে— সেন তখন ভীমের মতন অপরাজেয়, সেনকে পড়তে পারাই একটা প্রিভিলেজ তখন।
