The discovery of a wax replica of a vampire draws archaeologist David Kane into the bloodthirsty world of the undead, consumed by his own passion for blood and in thrall to the mysterious figure that would control all of New York. Original.
I wouldn't call this horror. It had monsters, but they weren't really scary. More like an action drama, maybe suspense/ thriller... Anyway, even though it wasn't scary it was ok, and I liked it. Until the end.
Spoilers:
Author took cliche vampires and made a unique story where the main villain poses a massive physical threat, but only vicariously. A powerful (but paralyzed) vampire exerts his telepathic influence in NYC, cue the havoc.
Really cool premise. And the pacing was great. It kept my interest and I read it very quickly.
BUT, the ending was a disappointment. An interesting buildup kinda collapses in on itself and towards the end stuff happens with no explanation. It reads as though the author painted themselves in a corner and then just kinda gave up on a satisfying ending, so he just threw whatever he had down and hoped it landed well... But it didn't.
I also found the dialogue to be a bit awkward.
Would have been three stars if not for the ending, and somewhat unrealistic dialogue.
I loved this book as a kid, in about 1997 when it was new. I found it in a plastic bin in my garage and decided to read it again for old times’ sake. I didn’t make it through the first chapter. I couldn’t possibly have been less interested. I was put off by the main character almost instantly. I have absolutely no recollection of why I ever liked this book.
