I've only read one other book besides Redfall from Falconer, and I've noticed that he has a great ominous and dark feel to his writing. There are parts to Redfall that I would even categorize as morbid and perversive. He does a great job at portraying anguish and despair.
With this being said, I was instantly hooked after reading the memorable description of the Pay-Per-View Execution in the first Chapter. The disheartenment that is projected onto the reader, cannot come from just any great author.
The combination of tribulation with science fiction, is what really caught my attention on this book! Of course, there's tons of mystery and intrigue mixed in with everything, which keeps you hooked from the very beginning. On top of all that, Falconer also has an amazing way of describing the intense action scenes.
The book is written from many different view points, and it switches throughout each chapter. I found this really drew me into the book. Sometimes to find out what happens to your favorite character, you have to read through a side character first. I can always appreciate an author who can write character and scene breaks properly, keeping the reader hooked.
It's not a very long book, so it makes a perfect read for road trips, plane rides, or a rainy day inside. I'm just happy that the second book has already been written, because I'm absolutely hooked on the characters and what's going to happen to them next.
This isn't your normal dystopian sic-fi read. I give it 5/5!

We are introduced to a new world in this book. StarBright Networks have partnered with the government to show the live executions of criminals for crowd entertainment and Simon finds it horrific to be there, listening to Tessa plead that she is innocent before dying in front of a baying crowd. She was accused of the mass murder of scientists and their families and even Simon believed the evidence presented as he himself went into hiding from the media and authorities. As he leaves the arena, he is recognised by the media and it leads to a hate mob giving chase to him to gain revenge for what his wife did. Rescue comes when a strange red rain begins and distracts the mob long enough to allow Tally and G to rescue him and take him back to their safe compound where they need his help in their investigation into the activities of RaineTech, and they think Tessa is innocent.
Jeffrey Hansen, founder and CEO of RaineTech created and unleashed the red rain around the world, blowing up his underwater complex to destroy evidence before escaping in his mini sub. When he is attacked by an unknown enemy, he is determined to find out who is trying to kill him and decides he needs to find Simon, a previous contact, and get him to find out who did it and destroy them. It is going to be a difficult task as he has washed up on an island run by a notorious criminal so Jeffrey has to get diplomatic in his negotiations with the criminals if he has any hope of surviving his imprisonment. Vito runs Indigo Technologies and warns his trusted employee Zeke to stay safe inside a specially prepared compound while the rain is on. Vito also tells President Cooper who was responsible for the red rain and offers his assistance. General Rawlings wants to find Simon and get him to track down Hansen.
Tessa has set up a prepper property with the people she trusts, a base where they can work on their investigation. Her people are very much divided about having Simon with them as they find it hard to trust adults. Simon himself is unsure if he actually wants to get involved with Tessa's group. Her brother has set up his own compound nearby as the siblings disagree on pretty much everything. So when his group are sent a weapon delivery that was intended for a shadowy government mercenary group, his people become an instant target.
This book was a decent enough read but I didn't find myself greatly excited by it. I think part of the problem was the red rain. I found that and the conspiracy surrounding it interesting but the rain just seemed to keep falling and not actually doing anything. I was expecting it to be toxic or turn people mad or something, but it just seemed to keep raining and nothing was really happening with it other than it being strange and people staying indoors. It seems to just be disrupting things like communications but I struggled to get excited about it through the book.
I didn't feel greatly connected to the characters, especially Simon. We get told about how his life fell apart after his wife was arrested but I just don't really get him. He was a bit of a cardboard cutout and I was never greatly invested in his story or why everyone and their dog in this crisis seemed to require his personal help. He never exactly strikes you as the go-to guy that they keep making him out to be. Tessa and G were mildly interesting and with a bit of development could become interesting but I just felt that there were too many shadowy people with half discussed agendas and little development taking up a lot of the story, rather than just dealing with the main event of the rain and what is coming next. There is also that teaser of 'we think your wife was innocent' but nothing comes from that and Simon doesn't seem to want the answers, which is weird.
It just didn't grab me and pull me into the story the way I want an apocalypse book to do. I never really felt invested in either the characters or plot and while there wasn't anything really wrong with it, I never got excited by it. It lacked tension until very close to the end and it was more like setting up a story than really telling one. The book was ok to read but I don't feel interested enough to continue with the series.

Have no clue what's going on!
Apocalyptic, Preppers, government conspiracy, growing societal bloodlust and lack of humanity for others. You are led on a journey but really aren't given enough information as it is being saved for the next book. I think this left this book lacking as you had so many things brought into play with zero answers or hints as to where it's going. I don't know enough to say I would read the next one! Only one of the characters is remotely interesting but many are under developed at this stage.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a review!

This was actually a pretty interesting story. The setting world and characters were a little different from usual SHTF books.
The story takes place during an event in which geo-engineering programs have been co-opted to seed the atmosphere with something which turns the clouds red and causes them produce an algae-like substance which falls like blood rain. Meanwhile, a brother and sister both prepare their respective compounds for a forseen collapse event which is turning out to be nothing like what they expected. Among all this upheaval, Simon Redfall seems to be the nations most wanted man. Everyone seems to think he is the key player to figure out just how to stop what is sure to escalate beyond repair.

It took me a while to figure out what was going on, especially what has occurred prior to the execution. Simon was difficult to really connect with for most of the book, though Tally was a good strong character and fairly appealing. There is an interesting mystery going on but the ending was terribly abrupt. Had there not been a banner about book 2 at the end, I would have thought there were some pages missing. Surely, there is a better way to lead into the next book.

I would be in a panic if this happened
all of the public would . The purpose of engineering this rain is not clear and will be revealed later. the plot taking off with the man being needed really helped. at first I thought he would be wisked away to a space war as an aliens prisoner , which is probably some other book I have read. so, I will follow to the next book to see if it can stay original.

This was a very good read but I was severely disappointed to find out it had a cliff hanger ending. I love a series, but this was just a cliff hanger. This was set in a slightly futuristic world and some of the societal changes were not well-explained but overall a good book. I will be seeking out the rest of the series.

Surprisingly Good
This type of book is not what I usually read, but I read the description and decided to take a chance. I am glad I did. If you choose to read it, I believe that you will, too.

Interesting premise.
I f ound this book interesting . The execution was a bit over the top. I don't think I could live in such a society.

A great book interesting characters. Reminds me of a combination of stories like hunger games and Angel has Fallen with some other things mixed into the recipe! Entertaining for sure

This is a fast moving, introduction to an engaging dystopian series. My rating 4.25.
Simon Redfall was a respected former special operative who established a successful security business, Ghost Works. The business went into bankruptcy and Simon went into hiding after his wife committed a terrorist act, massacring a group of visiting scientists and their families. Simon has been living off the grid for two years and only returned for his wife's execution which is a mega public extravaganza, legalized so it can be exploited to help raise money for government budget shortfalls.
Simon suffers quietly through his wife’s cries of innocence. When it is over he tries to slip away but reporters and angry citizens try to mob him. The only thing that stops them is red rain that comes from nowhere and distracts the mob long enough for Simon to be pulled into a van and whisked away.
Simon find himself with a team of teen-aged survivalists and geniuses who need his help in consulting and contacts, to unravel and deal with the society collapsing around them. They have a secure survival base called Pandora, located in Amish country. Tally Wicks, their leader, also has a brother, Wyatt, who has a more militant compound, Jericho, a few miles away. Wyatt wants the two groups to join forces and challenge the government, while Tally is looking for a logical, peaceful solution. But whether it is cyber rebellion or military rebellion it looks like the groups are going to face major technological trouble. Before it is fully revealed how Simon can help the teen group at Pandora, a militant force of some sort attacks the Jericho compound. It might be a competing gang or something more sinister.
Between the scenes introducing Simon, Pandora and Jericho, readers meet the ‘nefarious’ characters. Zeke, sounds like a ‘clean up’ man for Indigo Technologies, the mega company that took over the security world when Simon’s business closed. Jeffrey Hansen is a scientist who founded Rain Tech. Although he provided covert weather technology for the government, his current project is a complete secret to everyone except his obscenely wealthy, contract employer.
The involved government parties include General Nate Rawlings, Director of National Intelligence, Nancy Wiggins, NSA Director, Conner Haskins, and a contract militia group, Nighthawk. There are quite a few threads moving along the story line and this first book hasn’t tied them all together yet. The independence of American society has been crumbling at the opening of this story. The red rain and manipulated events move the story into a scary dystopian world which is being controlled by technology in the hands of powerful, wealthy fanatics who have, as yet, undisclosed agendas.
I really like the elements of technology being used by the good guys and bad guys. I am interested in the dynamics between the youth and their aversion to the older generation. This first story moves quickly, setting up the political atmosphere, strong characters and a glimpse of the conflicts and action that will undoubtedly escalate. However, there are a lot of open questions and, as I was warned, the book stops in the middle of the action. The reader is left to choose to either walk away or move on to book 2, Redfall: Freedom Fighters. Since it was an “argh” moment for me, I want more.
Audio Notes: I really enjoyed the narration by Gary Tiedemann. He provides distinct character voices and includes solid emotional nuances. I would be glad to listen to more of his narration. The combination of talented narration and steady action made this an engaging listen.
Cautionary content: This book does contain violence and bloodshed consistent with a dystopian setting. It may also contain some foul language - that barely registered for me so it couldn't have been too glaring.
I received this audio title from the author for an honest review.

This book was awesome!!! I absolutely devoured it.
We start with seeing Simon Redfall at his wife's execution. She is being put to death for terrorism. He is in disguise so no one knows who he is. The execution is a major event that has the feel of a carnival! It's also televised. Simons wife maintains her innocence right up to the end, and Simon suffers through it, never quite believing she did what she is accused of, but also wondering how is she innocent? He tries to leave quietly but is recognised by a reporter, angry people turn and start chasing him. He runs but is trapped when suddenly red rain starts falling, the crowd is distracted when a van with some kids come and save him. What follows is a plot of mystery, intrigue subterfuge and the lengths people go to to win.
Character wise, this has a lot of different ones but they were all well written and developed. I particularly liked the group of youths that have the compound in the Amish country called Pandora. It's refreshing to have a book that has young people as preppers and not just the adults. These kids are also incredibly smart and capable. They know there's a conspiracy afoot and are willing to do what's needed to uncover the truth, the first being finding Simon Redfall!!
The author has definitely captured my attention with this book. It sets the scene for what seems to be an amazing series. He has created a unique an addictive book and one that will bring you on a roller coaster, edge of your seat ride! One thing though, be warned that this ends in a major cliff hanger, not even a cliff hanger per say, it kinda just ... ends! We are warned about it at the start, but it still feels abrupt. Yet despite me not liking cliff hangers, I didn't mind this because it has made me want book 2 even more. I've become invested in this story and can't wait to see where it goes.
This is the first book I've listened to being read by Gary Tiedemann and it won't be the last. He was so easy to listen to and really brought the story to life. He had plenty of distinct tones for each character and knew when to bring the extra tenseness needed to make it thoroughly enjoyable.
*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*

If you are not interested in a sci-fi-thriller filled with government conspiracies, how-to prepper info, and truly unique apocalyptic themes, then you’ll want to skip this one.
When Jay J Falconer told me a little about the new story he was cooking up last year—right before he won an Amazon Scout contract, I thought it was probably one of the most unique apocalyptic ideas I had heard of, and that was just scratching the surface. Redfall: Fight for Survival starts with a boom and then comes at you like a thousand pieces of shrapnel. I’ll admit, it ends purposely with a literal cliff-hanger, leading you to the second book (Redfall: Freedom Fighters) in the series. But, I think it’s a worthwhile investment of your time in what will be at least a three part series.
Jay is a prepper himself and so it should come as no surprise with his background and the series title (American Prepper Series) that the main protagonist (Simon Redfall) is a prepper too. Although, Simon is not your usual ex-military survivalist retread. The “prepper porn” (as I call it when interesting survival techniques and/or gun details are offered for the reader’s education, as well as enjoyment) mostly comes later in the book as we get to hear about some of the facets of the prepper community Simon has joined in Amish country. But don’t savor these details too much, because like a .308 caliber hollow-point round coming at you from a Barrett sniper rifle, this sucker will speed up on you and knock you on your keister. Then it’s done and you can’t wait to get started on the next book.
I give Redfall five stars for its unique storyline—don’t even think you’ll know what’s coming next, you won’t; terrific detail; competent weave of characters and storyline, and awesome start.

Redfall: Fight for Survival (American Prepper Series) (Volume 1)
I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I write this review as I sit by my computer waiting to download the second book in this series.
The book begins with a near dystopian world and a world-wide broadcast of an execution, sanctioned by the government for profit. We are introduced to the gradual decline of the U.S.A. in the first chapter. Legalized marijuana, gambling, and prostitution head the list of issues. Well written character descriptions draw the reader in page by page to scenarios around the world. The reader is led to believe this is just not one mad man trying to conquer a country, but several dark individuals with their own agendas. Oh, and the red rain with a consistency of syrup falling around the world. Add to that groups of teenagers, fully prepped, envisioning their visions of "what is the worst that can happen?", and
of course, the red rain with a consistency of syrup falling around the world.
My one regret, I did not download the second book before I started reading the first

I really started getting into this book and then...BAM..."To be continued!"
Book one seems to be focused on tandem timeline storytelling and follows several different characters as it establishes the basic plot of the story. There are definitely some early action scenes and and they are written very well to convey a sense of drama and frenzy. Got my adrenaline pumping in a few spots. I like that we started to really get to know Redfall. I really felt for the guy and hope that he's the hero that he appears he'll be in this series.
The setting is in the not too distant future, and the situations described by the author seem plausible. The writing was very good and descriptive. The dialogue was well done. I really liked the flow of this book.
The narration was also well done. The voices of the different characters were distinct. Dialogue was done smooth and well with good emphasis and modulation, bringing the voices to life.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

First I need to say wow! This book is pure action from the first word. It is smart too. By this I mean that every character is knowledgeable & intelligent. I'm not use to that. So many authors dumb down their characters or make you feel like they think their readers are stupid. This is not one of those books. I'm amazed at the about of research done &/or general knowledge the author has of just about everything. This story ends with one hell of a cliffhanger. I'm ready for the next one.
I want more.... More back story....more current story. I really want to know if the wife of Redfall is actually guilty. How will he deal with his guilt & sorrow if she is innocent?
The characters are well fleshed out & intriguing. Ian hooked.

The curtain opens on Simon Redfall's wife's execution. She was found guilty of committing a terrorist act by gunning down a dozen or so scientists and families. The execution was a pay-per-view media circus. Upon completion Simon tries to slip away, but is recognized, chased down, and beaten. Simon's rescuer, a young female who leads a group of idealistic preppers and has been tailing him, appears from the shadows and gets him to safety. It is at this time that the blood red rain begins to fall. The story proceeds from this point with Simon being accepted into the group, it's mission to determine the origin and purpose of the red rain and identify the person(s) behind it. I'm looking to book two "Freedom Fighters" to fill in missing info that might have/should have been included here. Three.point.five

There is Nothing Predictable About This Book
I really liked this book. The author created a unique world and cause for the collapse of society.I appreciate when an author provides flawed characters trying to survive in a untenable world.I have read a lot of predictable apocalyptic fiction and was quite pleased that the author has something unique to add to the genre. The book ends with a bit of a cliffhanger which i expect with a series. Gary Tiedemann did a great job narrating the book and has a pleasant voice, which is really important when listing to an audiobook for hours.I plan on keeping this author on my radar and finishing the series.I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Guns and germ warfare
The public execution at the beginning of the book was too gruesome for me. I couldn't comprehend by anyone would develop and implement a red rain that would destroy the
Earth. This is one of those books you have to buy four or five installments to understand the story

Great book! Totally sucked me in to make it a non-stop read. There were a few editing snafus, but nothing that really interrupted the story.
What an awesome start to a series! I'm looking forward to more from Mr. Falconer. Well done!

Actually finished this book about 2 days earlier just now getting around to rating due to the holiday and having to work. It's a pretty good beginning to a survival series although a little slow at first. I plan on reading the second one to see if the pace picks up a little.
