Facing the zombie apocalypse in a wheelchair might prove a challenge to others. For thirteen-year-old Ash it's just another fight for her life.

When feeling deserted and alone with the knowledge that your days are pretty much numbered, you might decide not to be pushed around anymore. But stuck in a wheelchair with the risen dead on your tail—this might prove a challenge.

Ash’s stay at a hospital that for all intents might be her last, turns into a different nightmare when a killer virus overcomes the staff and her fellow patients.

With the walking dead roaming the hospital halls, Ash has to depend on the help of an old man, and a soldier who could turn out to be the enemy to survive. She not only has to use her head, avoiding zombies, but also to stay out of the hands of a shady government agency that wants to dissect her.

This is one of those times when the book cover is much more enticing than the actual story.

Ash is a quick read at 118 pages, the story doesn't break new grounds and it doesn't have depth or character development but it's moderately entertaining zombie apocalypse story and it's free on Kindleunlimited.

*** Warning***
There is also a cliffhanger ending here and the sequel, Brooklyn, Wheels and Zombies doesn't pick up where this book left off until a third of the way or maybe a bit more into the story.

Ash is set in a hospital, it's centred on a 13 year old wheelchair bound girl called Ash who has stage 4 cancer. Ash looks too young for her age. Her future looks bleak and her story tragic but the reader is left to gather information about Ash in tiny bits and pieces from different scenes and the occasional vague resentful thoughts swirling in Ash's mind... The process, instead of making her mysterious, made getting to know Ash a dry and uninspiring process which increasing my disinterest in Ash as a main character. There is nothing memorable about her except the obvious, there is nothing imaginative here, there's nothing unique about her personality or thought process.

Moody teen stereotype:
The petulant, snarky, moody teen stereotype is overused here and it just doesn't fit Ash's characterisation. Her broken home, the bleakness of her world, her suffering and loss should make her a more thoughtful character with more depth and complex emotions, but instead, her character is a bland, very immature, dense and rude. Ash's uncharitable, catty and often cruel thoughts of the people around her, especially the nurse who was nice enough to her borrow her phone and listen to music...Well, I was surprised and annoyed with Ash. And yet, her judgemental thoughts about the nurse sounded a bit too adult and knowing for a 13 year old who spent a long time in hospital. It just didn't fit her character...It didn't make sense.

In a way, I can understand why Ash comes across as unfriendly, she was feeling alone, a prisoner in her own body and her time on earth was running out fast. At the same time, her attitude, petulance and rudeness (which was presented as snark) was distracting and unnecessary.

The ‘I’m not a kid’ issues:
I was also annoyed by Ash’s constant need to correct anyone who calls her a kid and repeat the 'I'm not a kid' line. It was cute and even heart-warming the first few times she had to protest and remind adults to stop calling her a 'kid', but after a while it was too much. I’ve checked my kindle and the word ‘kid’ was repeat 28 times here! Why?

For all her survival instinct and quick flash of intelligent thought, Ash can also be a bit dense and at times completely clueless. Such as not understanding or playing along when her rescuer (the woman going out of her way to help her at personal cost) was pretending to follow orders from her superiors and instead of playing along, Ash decided to make a scene, make accusations and have an epic fit in the middle of a military group who couldn't care less about her. *smh*

There's also her lack of curiosity about Angie's revelation that she's from the FBI:

"I'm actually with the FBI", she said. "My partner and I, were searching for evidence to persecute the ones responsible for releasing this virus."
"I know," I said. Angie looked at me with an astonished expression that made me smile, releasing some of the tension in my arms.
"You know I was with the FBI?" she asked
"No, but you saved me-I'm here, right?" I said and narrowed my eyes at her. "Who's your partner? that tall dude with the bright eyes?"

"For a smart kid, you are pretty dense sometimes."

Narrative:
I really wanted to like Ash; all the ingredients were there to feel a sense of compassion. I was ready to be pulled into her world and feel all the emotions but the narrative was so bland and told in a matter of fact way that left all the expected feels in a state of arrested development. The teenage stereotype also got on my nerves. I just couldn't help feeling that the author chose to make Ash a disabled cancer patient to garner sympathy but the writing style and narrative failed to bridge the gap between the reader and the main character.

Lack of interesting setting and wider view point:
The hospital was just too narrow a setting to be interesting. It would've worked too but only if the author allowed the reader to get to know the characters and what they're about and if only the characters knew each other or that the author allowed them to bond...But the narrow setting didn't allow for that and as a result I wasn't emotionally invested in them.

There was a quick underwhelming news report about what's happening in the rest of the country but it's all seen through Ash's POV, making it all dry and uninteresting. I wanted to see more, feel more and understand more about the virus, I wanted to know how it all started and the impact of the virus on the US and possibly the world but, sadly the scope of this story is firmly centred on the hospital and Ash, and she doesn't know anything, she's not inquisitive and her physical disability makes it impossible for her find out more on her own. And that makes for a boring story.

Random/pointless characters:
There are bunch of characters here like the patients, doctors, nurses, visiting family of other patient, Military personnel who show up out of the blue and then promptly get lost or die quickly and in the end, I couldn't help thinking, 'what is the point of all these characters because I don't see how they further the plot...Wait? Is there even a plot?'. Yup, I don't know what the plot is here except people turning into zombies and Ash surviving it all with a lot of luck and help from Angie and others.

I'm not even sure why I should care about Ash or Angie; they are not fully fleshed-out, believable characters. Angie especially is a complete mystery. There are vague impressions about her character such as saying she’s from the FBI Chuck, the old man in the cancer ward, was the only slightly colourful character in the hospital... but my hopes for him fizzled out too. *sigh*

Oddly enough, the word 'gezer' is used here, but it's a uniquely British term meaning old man, and I don't think Americans use it. Or am I wrong about this? Do Americans/Canadians use the same word?

There’s a cliffhanger ending here...I don't like cliffhanger endings so I went ahead and read the sequel Brooklyn, Wheels and Zombies but at 55% I just couldn't do it anymore. The heroine, Mags, is ridiculously clueless and yet she manages to survive despite the odds and her lack of intelligence. Also, when she met up with Ash at the hospital, things went downhill fast and everything condensed into mind-numbing boredom.

Having read this book and more than half of the sequel, I can honestly say I don’t like the writing style, plot, pacing and characters. The only thing I like about this book is the cover and It's the only reason I gave it a chance in the first place.

Violence/gore:
Zombies:

Ash is a thirteen year old girl and in a hospital when a virus overcomes the town and turns people into Zombies. While she is trying to avoid the Zombies and soldiers who are there to evacuate the building she meets a few interesting characters, who like her are trying to stay alive. I enjoyed reading this book for the fun of it, and there where times I smiled because of the humor of it.
This is not a eat them all Zombie book in a dark or a cultural kind of way, but a entertaining and light reading book for fun.
The character building is interesting, and it left me smiling and wanting to know more about what happens to Ash and the people in the hospital.

I´m definitely going to get my hands on the rest of the series.

The Pros: Positive representation of disabilities: Ash has been left paralyzed due to a medical error, in addition she has cancer, plus she is 13 years old. It was a bad hand she was dealt.
Hospital setting: An enclosed environment always adds to the terror of being chased.

The Cons: Evil army scientist is very cliched. Plus, if history has taught us nothing it is that soldiers can not depend on "I was only following orders." when defending their actions.

I enjoyed this story enough that I will probably seek out the next book in the series sometime this year, especially since it is part of Kindle Unlimited.

Very Good

Nice take on zombies with a plucky main character I hope to see more of. I loved it and I'm off to read the rest.

Ash has been paralysed by an operation gone wrong, abandoned by her family who only had her to try and save their beloved daughter from a genetic disease-and now Ash is dying from that cancer too. Stuck in a hospital ward ran by a bitchy nurse, she turns to a dying old man for company. When they hear about the pandemic and riots outside, they are surprised not to be evacuated like the rest of the city. Instead they are to be used for scientific research to stop the zombie virus. Ash and Chuck are about to try their escape when the hospital is overrun by the zombies, and the soldiers who are there to extract the cancer patients.

I liked this one because it was different. We have two heroes, both with cancer, one hooked up to bottled oxygen and unable to walk far, and the other in a wheelchair. It was nice to see this diversity in a zombie book, something I am always longing to see. I loved Chuck's character the best as I enjoy seeing older characters as my heroes. We don't see enough of that. I also liked Angie and Jonesy, who have the job of rounding up these patients to be experimented on, but who do start to see them as people needing protected. There were a few nice twists in the relationships between the four of them as they make their way through the hospital, avoiding zombies and soldiers. I enjoyed the hospital as a location because buildings like this are perfect for the zombie apocalypse when the reader is unsure what lurks around every corner. I liked the characters in general though Ash was a bit of a cow to start with, expecting people to do things for her but never being grateful and being as difficult as she could. However it wasn't enough to make me hate her or anything.

An enjoyable short zombie book with diversity, a solid plot and good characters. I might read on with the series at some point.

Ash: A novella in the Wheels and Zombies series

Ash is a gutsy little girl dying of Cancer. Now she is caught up in a hospital that is overrun with Zombies. However a lady soldier has brought her hope of escape and rescue. But if hunger, soldiers , or Zombies don't kill her how long can she survive the Cancer? Or is the Zombie virus a Cancer Cure? ENJOY this THRILLER. I RECOMMEND.

This was another book I found on Kindle Unlimited. The thing that hooked me was the cover, and I had also wanted to expand my reading choice into an area that I haven't really been interested in in the past … Zombies.

The setting for Ash was in a hospital and follows the meltdown of society into a nation of zombies. One thing that stood out with this book is that the protagonist was wheelchair bound. This added an extra dimension to the genre. It would be hard enough fleeing zombies with full body function, but this takes survival to a whole other level.

I won't go into too much detail of the plot, but I will say that I was taken in by the book. I enjoyed the suspense and the action as much as the insight to the challenges of the character. I recommend this book to zombie fans who would like something a little different.

A quick read that was like the first episode of a good TV zombie series. I liked the sparse description and efficiency of language. There were a few linguistic oddities (Nurse RatcheD vs. the more familiar to me Nurse RatcheT), but I got what the author was going for. I am curious enough to go on to book two.

Loved it

I appreciated the new concept on an old idea. So many zombie stories already exists. This one was refreshing and also brought on a lot of anxiety for me personally due to the main characters disability

Loved the story.

Ash was so brave in a world gone crazy. Some people were worse than the zombies. Would recommend this story.

Got my attention right away.

This book was an attention grabber, and went on to become an exciting attention keeper right to the end. I hope the next book in the series is as good! I'm not sure of the age issue; so many younger people are used to more violence in what they read. Perhaps this should be an issue between their parents and them. That said, this book was well written, fast paced, and exciting to the end!

It’s a fun quick read about a terminally ill girl in a wheelchair trying to survive a zombie outbreak set in a NYC hospital. I thought this was actually fairly well written compared to what I initially went in thinking. Okay-ish pacing. Characters were cool--Ash was a bit annoying but yet again kids are in fact annoying and persistent! I definitely will check out the rest of this series… eventually 🙃

This was my first Kindle book I've read with my brand new Kindle app I put on my phone. I had to get the Kindle app because the library doesn't have this series nor can I do an Inter Library Loan because no other libraries have these books. I loved this first book and I can't wait to read the others!

Just read for the second time because I read it the first time back in April of 2017. I got the other books in the series that Christmas with a gift card. I haven't read the others yet because I wanted to wait until this October to read them for the Halloween season. I loved this book the second time around too. About to start book #2!

This could be a refreshing twist for zombie fans. Our main heroine is a thirteen-year-old girl in a wheelchair. Ash is in the hospital fighting a losing battle with cancer when the world goes mad. A virus is killing people, but they rise again, rabid for human flesh. As the virus spreads through the hospital, Ash doesn’t have to worry about cancer killing her anymore. The zombies are the big worry now.

Ash is a resilient young girl, brave in the face of death, and refusing to be looked at as a weak victim. She has plenty of ideas on how to get out, to survive. And shes’ adept at reading people, which comes in handy when she discovers why the military want all of the patients on the cancer ward.

There’s lots of action, relentless zombies, and some intrigue for conspiracy fans. Not everyone is brave or good. And I was caught by surprise by a few of the characters. A clever way for the author to offer up more fodder for the zombies

I knew going in this was a novella for a continuing series, but I wasn’t too thrilled when I looked at my kindle and noticed I was 99% through the book and there was no end in sight. It ended on a zinger of a cliffhanger, but, since I enjoyed the characters, I’m encouraged to keep going.

This is the run of the mill end of days, zombie story. The main character is one of those people you're supposed to feel bad for. She lost her sister to a genetic disorder, ended up paralyzed by an inept Dr who was drunk & high & had been up for 48 hours straight. Her sister ended up commuting suicide as a way to "return the gift" her sister had given her. <-- Pulled from the book. Not my words with that last sentence. With that said, the book is straight down the middle of the road as far as books in this genre go. If you've ever watched World War Z, you've read this book. Now instead of Brad Pitt, imagine a girl strapped to a wheel chair and it's pretty much the same thing.

With all I said before, the book is not horrible, it's just that it breaks absolutely no new ground and it's quite forgettable in nature. The author tries to make the characters more lifelike, but it doesn't happen here. It just doesn't come together that way.

If you have some spare time and just want more of the same, this book is free and will kill some time for you (also, this is a short read). If you're looking for something awe inspiring, you're going to have to forego this story.

ASH: A Novella: Wheels and Zombie Series#1

Some Novellas can't get the stories across. Author M. Van does a excellent job of getting to a short that left me wanting for a big story! One that dragged me into a young girls (Àsh) life as a cancer patient, therefore "untouchable" to these undead. Awesome you say; problem is ppl, as in the Science community want these cancer afflicted to become forced, guinea pigs for military purposes in combating this new virus.
The one problem is Ash. She isn't to happy to be sliced and diced for the government's next biological weapon.
These books go out to exploit cancer patients as the cure for the zombie virus. Ash, a young cancer pt. is targeted and also is in a wheelchair!
The ending is harsh, be ready to be pissed at the government!

Great read

Ash is 13, paralyzed from the waist down thanks to a botched spinal tap and stuck in the cancer ward dying. She's trapped in the hospital when the outbreak happens. Chuck, an old man on oxygen in the cancer ward with Ash is hell bent on saving her. Soldiers are there to take all the cancer patients to a lab to test their theories on but one soldier Angie has other ideas. It seems the virus avoids people with cancer so will Chuck and Ash survive? Read this pulse pounding novella to find out.

Really Good

I really enjoyed this book! The writing style is unique and I dig it. There are some errors that obviously need a good edit job thrown at them, but it didn't make the story unreadable. There were parts that left me with questions i probably wasn't meant to be left with, but, again, that didn't take away too much from the story. I'm intrigued and want to read the next one. Definitely worth the quick read.

4*

I really liked this this is the story of a thirteen year old cancer patient girl that has quite the character. She's trying to survive a zombie apocalypse and meets a variation of characters in the process. This take on zombies is totally different.

If this were a TV show, this first book could be episode one for sure. i would like to continue with book 2 some time.

Decent, short, fast read.

It was a decent and fast read. While it was interesting I didn't really feel too invested or really wonder what was going to happen next. I could see the next one being even more interesting if you're into this type of genre. There were a few grammatical errors though. Wrong words used in certain places and an "s" left off or unnecessarily added on words occasionally. Things like that.

Interesting zombie outlooks

This book seems to be typical zombie apocalypse but from a different outlook. Instead of watching our heros of the typical middle-class, healthy, and fully capable adult, we are seeing this series start out from a young paraplegic cancer patient. Big twist: the zombies don't attack cancer patients unless agitated or provoked. Interested to continue the series.

Awkwardly written, slow (which is the opposite of fast-paced, btw; this story was not in any way, shape, or form fast-paced; it dragged), too many caricatures rather than fully drawn characters. Quite frankly, it was boring and tedious. I ended up skimming most of this. Would've DNF'd it, but it was short.

Hopefully, the series gets better as it progresses.

Zombies with a twist

Lots of action, well-written, will definitely keep your attention. Well defined characters with depth. I read the entire series before writing this review. Don't miss the chance to read this series. You won't be disappointed. Our heroines are especially interesting! An author worth following and a series thoroughly enjoyed.

Fast paced and well written

The novella is fast paced and well written, but just beware this is one of those...."to find out what happens next, buy the next one" kind of books. So if you're looking for the whole story, you'll need to pay up even more.

Not a bad story. Felt like describing a movie scene, characters were good and left it open for another. 4/5 for me. May have to see what happens in the next book. Size was probably right for this too just around 112 pages on the kindle app.
