Summary; Rapunzel is a timeless fairytale about a girl who is taken as a baby by an evil witch who hides her in a tall tower far away. When a Prince hears her beautiful singing, he simply can't stay away! What will the witch do once she finds out?
Prompt; The sub-genre of Rapunzel is a folktale because it's not a factual story and it's been told by word of mouth. There has been slightly different versions of the story and what happens to the prince.
Good basic version of a long ago story. Includes lots more detail than most versions. There is a longer explanation of the main story. There is great background information given for why the witch wouldn't let Rapunzel go from the tower. It is well-written by a librarian from PA. Bravo! Highly recommended for Grades K-2.
It was really interesting that a young husband picked the rapunzel plant because his wife was hungry and wanted to eat it, as she is pregnant. He being a great husband, picked some rapunzel plant and that was when the witch first interacted with him and put the heavy curse on his wife that their child would be hers. A little unfair for eating a plant, don't you think? It was interesting too to see how her prince-to-be was able to save her. I thought it was a great read and one that any child would enjoy. I would probably use this story in a teaching setting about honesty and how we cannot choose our consequences to our actions when we steal. Having to give up your daughter to a witch who will have to live in a tall castle is a little rough, but I think it'll be a great way to illustrate the importance of honesty.
I never really read "Rapunzel" growing up, I found the full story to be interesting. The illustrations in the book would keep a child's interest. I do feel like this book could confuse children slightly because Rapunzel was named after a plant, I found myself slightly confused upon finding that out.
Utilized in the classroom: This could be used in a lesson about taking things that don't belong to you and that doing so has consequences.
I really liked the artwork, very aesthetic imagery. I also liked how this version was a more accurate depiction of Rapunzel's story. Very nice retelling and the words flowed well from page to page. Pretty cute depiction of Rapunzel and her prince. Nice use of text and fonts to look lovely overall.
This version (the more original version) was magnificent! I love the unexpected in the story, of what happened to the prince. It was a happy ending but the struggle they went through made me more attached to the story.
Read this with a preschooler and kindergartener. It was interesting to compare it to the story of Tangled that they know so well. A good chance to talk about how stories change as they're told over and over.
