Countless people in Britain and Ireland live in a fog of fear and worry, where anxiety cripples their capacity to live normal lives. In Flagging Anxiety & Panic, Dr Harry Barry lays bare the hidden world of the person struggling with anxiety and shares what routinely goes on in the 'emotional mind' of the person in difficulties. Whether you suffer from anxiety and phobias, or are a professional working with this population, this book will provide the latest treatment solutions for overcoming the fears that stand in the way of living a full, happy life. Flagging Anxiety is about solutions. Reading this book will result with a rich understanding of the buried world of anxiety, alongside practical solutions to combat it.
Perhaps useful for those unfamiliar with CBT as a useful tool for General Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, PTSD and Social Anxiety. However, it lacks the substance that informs the approach. If instead of repeating the same things page after page (identical case after identical case), the author had deepened an analysis of the principles behind CBT while presenting the cases, the book would have been convincing and fruitful.
Somewhat redundant but anyone who has anxiety understands why you need the repetitiveness and reassurance. I listened to the audiobook which I suspect made it that much better as it is very technical.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I have experienced anxiety and panic attacks since I was a young child. In my late 20’s and early 30’s, I experienced long periods of remission and occasionally would have periods of reoccurrence in my symptoms triggered by life changes or health events. A few months ago, I was back to being caught in the loop of daily panic attacks, and I adamantly refused to return to medication, particularly SSRIs, to manage my symptoms and stop the cycle of panic. Then I discovered this book, and it has changed my perspective in addressing anxiety and panic.
Dr. Barry does a wonderful job at breaking down complex concepts into an easily digestible format, and repetition reinforces key concepts. For those who truly suffer with anxiety, you understand the importance of repetition. The key concepts for me in my anxiety recovery journey are: 1. Understanding that anxiety and panic are your body’s protective mechanism. 2. Accepting that the symptoms are uncomfortable, but not dangerous. 3. Understanding that avoidant and safety behaviors only propel the anxiety and make it worse.
The CBT exercises are also very helpful. If you are challenged with anxiety, I hope you read this book and find relief as I have.
