A fantastic book written from the heart of Kimberly Rae speaking to the hearts of those who are suffering with Chronic Illness and wondering where God is in the midst of their troubles. I am one of those people. This book was timely to fall into my hands. I needed it right now.
Written as part-memoir of Kimberly's own journey with multiple chronic illnesses and how she has come through them. With honesty and humility she shares how it was not always easy to accept and that our feelings towards God at these times can be very raw, and the message is that it's okay to be like that. This is an author who CAN relate to your suffering, pain and all the feelings that come with it.
Seven years ago a chronic back injury changed my life, it took away a 25 year career that I had worked hard at and plunged me into medical retirement. Since then I have been diagnosed with 5 other chronic illness conditions, have undergone hospital stays, operations and am now almost housebound with 24/7 chronic pain and illness. I am only 42 years of age. I am facing two major operations next year. Just walking to my local shops is agony and hardly worth the pain. Have I had questions for God? Oh yes.
I have yelled at God, I have felt angry, left behind, ignored, abandoned, worried, scared, fearful, depressed, and hopeless, especially hopeless. I needed this book, I so needed it, maybe you do too?
Filled with encouraging scripture and an easy to read explanation of God's perspective and heart towards our illness and suffering. I cried reading of Kimberly's journey, because I got it, I related, chronic illness seems to unite sufferers, no matter what the diagnosis is.
I needed this fresh perspective on God's love and purpose through difficult times. Clear and solid advice on not letting thoughts run away with me and sink me into despair and dark thinking. It challenged me to seek God and not turn away from Him anymore, blaming him for my life and how the vision I had for it has all gone out of the window.
It takes courage to live with chronic illness and pain and everyone, just about everyone says "why does God not fix it?" I have, I have screamed it out at night when I am reaching for morphine and can't sleep for pain and silent tears are streaming down my face. I screamed out for instant healing, knowing He can do it. It has not happened yet. But this book gives me hope of getting through these times with Him, not running away from Him.
The book tackles how depression goes hand in hand ofter with chronic illness, a vicious cycle that can come and go many times in the period of illness and suffering.
Kimberly really understands what you are going through and whether you are a Christian or not, somehow illness and suffering makes just about everybody want to know that God is there. We need to have something to hold on to.
He has big arms, He can hold us all if we will let him.
Wonderfully written, easy to digest with study notes and questions at the end of each chapter to work through alone, or with your partner or even in a group. I liked the encouragement of what to pray for at the end of each chapter also.
A practical, heartfelt, moving book that I can't recommend enough to those, like me, like Kimberly live with chronic illness and pain. This book can help you see things from a more hopeful and positive perspective.
I received a copy of this book with great thanks from the author, Kimberly Rae, not even in exchange for a review, but because she knows I am a fellow sufferer and lover of God. Thanks so much Kimberly.
A quick read that provides an easy-to-digest biblical treatise on suffering. I’ve read several books about suffering, but I’ve gotten bogged down in some of them when the medical brain fog hits or the sleepless nights pile up.
I read this during the night when I was in significant pain and yet I could still read and understand the book — a testament to its accessibility and structure.
I recommend every book in her Sick and Tired series. And if you need a place to start first, check out Laughter for the Sick and Tired. It’s wonderful.
Why Doesn't God Fix It takes a brief look at illness and faith. I found it very easy to relate to the author because of her own health battles. She asks the same questions that I have asked, and doesn't brush the issues away with pat answers. The book includes two good appendices , one on having a relationship with God and another on faith and healing, which I really appreciated. Each chapter is about the length of a long devotion, and includes questions and an activity related to the chapter. I didn't do any of these, but they look helpful. In summary, an easy read for those struggling with their health and looking for a Christian perspective and encouragement.
This series has been a quick and easy read. I find it helpful for anyone with a chronic illness or caring for someone with a chronic illness. Ms. Rae offers thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter which are very helpful for anyone on this journey.
So good! Very real and down to earth, by an author who completely understands what it is like to live with chronic illness. Gives solid, Biblical answers to the questions we struggle with. Would highly recommend to anyone going through this kind of wilderness journey.
“Sometimes God is glorified by delivering his children from the trial. Other times, he is glorified by helping them endure it. God has a purpose for each of us individually, and trying to decide why one was delivered from, and another is being delivered through, is faulty.“ p. 117
Although I don't have a chronical illness, I know other people who are close to me who do. This book is great! It really makes you stop and think and helps you to know where God is in the midst of all your trials and struggles. It works well as a devotional book and would make a great gift for anyone. Definitely worth reading and passing along.
“Why Doesn’t God Fix It?” by Kimberly Rae takes on the big question everybody asks sooner or later: If God is so loving, why does He let bad things happen? Right up front Rae clarifies that she does not have a definitive answer, but she does have biblical support for what she believes to be the case.
Saddled with multiple chronic health issues, the author was recalled from the mission field in Bangladesh to a life of public speaking in the US. Inevitable questions would arise as some members of her various audiences would challenge her belief that God uses even chronic health issues to implement His will.
Instead of wallowing in self-pity, as so many choose to do, Rae turned to the Bible for answers to her own personal questions. In “Why Doesn’t God Fix It?” she does a superb job of calling upon the examples Jesus gave us when he walked the Earth as a human being.
As one who has also been saddled with a number of chronic health issues due to no fault of my own (i.e.- nothing I did “caused” my lupus, hearing loss, or vision deficiencies), I was personally pleased to find the author and I were already of one mind.
“Why Doesn’t God Fix It?” is a very professionally written biblical response to the titular question.
As someone who often ignores appendices when I read a book, I felt obliged to read Rae’s appendices in order to provide an accurate review. I am glad I did, because those appendices were filled with information as valuable as the body of the book.
In fact, for one appendix she realized and admitted she had avoided a couple uncomfortable Bible verses that were easier to ignore than to rectify, so she dove in head first and tackled those verses quite astutely.
All in all, “Why Doesn’t God Fix It?” is well written, easily readable, biblically correct and logically defensible. It is written as a Bible Study with each chapter focusing on a single topical discussion, followed by a series of questions and answers for subsequent group discussion.
This is a book that should be in every church’s library. It would also make a very good text for a special Sunday School class or small-group read, particularly for any members suffering from a “why me?” response to their health concerns.
“Why Doesn’t God Fix it?” Is a question I and many people like myself have asked themselves many times. When you read in the Bible about the miracles of God and a simple touch or you see on the TV people talking about everyday miracles and healings. One can’t help but wonder… why not me. Why doesn’t God fix me. I could do so much more if I were whole. This book offers good biblical insight and references from the Bible. The author also provides her opinion on why sufferings continue. Although I do not agree with everything the author says I do think this is a good book that provides good resources to look at and asks/ answers some good questions.
Kimberly Rae is very upfront in the beginning of the book that she has no intentions of solving all of your problems, but she does give some profound insight into what the Bible has to say, and what Jesus has to say about healing and faith. Most importantly, why doesn’t God heal me personally and what can I personally do about the negative feelings that can pop up when we feel abandoned by God.
She goes through point-by-point how the average person deals with pain in relationship to God because she has been there herself. Self-indulgence, pity, attempting to Bribe God, and even dealing with the healthy/wealthy crowd. She gives excellent, concise points with thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is dealing with long-term illness, pain, or depression.
God is not at fault, sickness is not part of the abundant life, John 10:10
When the foundation of the house is facility, the house built on it will also be. One of the first questions addressed was, if God's plan is for certain people to go through and live with sickness? Where this question was never answered in the affirmative, many doubts were played. Also knowing what it is like to live with an infirmary now for 59 years, and having had many of the same questions an doubts. I realize now that we have been called to overcome and not to justify and conform into what the world gives us. Jesus never said that overcoming would be easy or automatic for us, but He did say that He overcame the world, John 16:33. If He did it I think we should strive for it too.
God heard my cries and this book landed in front of me. I needed to read this. I cried over every chapter and felt renewed over every word. This helped so much.
