About the author
Mike Mignola

His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered.
In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics.
In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line (Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries.
Mike also created the award-winning comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head and has co-written two novels (Baltimore, or, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City) with best-selling author Christopher Golden.
Mike worked (very briefly) with Francis Ford Coppola on his film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer on the Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and was visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He lives somewhere in Southern California with his wife, daughter, a lot of books and a cat.

Really disliked the Liz story.

I don't usually do reviews of individual comics issues buthis was particularly good, and it's likely that these stories will only get reprinted in different collections and not together. Opening the anthology is Broken Vessels which, if taken solely on face value, does not seem very interesting or involving. Where the strength lies is in how much it ties into and connects with so much else in the Mignolaverse (as it's come to be called). This story illustrated just how textured, dense, and intricate a tapestry Mignola has woven over the years that he's been working on the characters and narratives of the Hellboy & B.P.R.D. comics. The second feature, the longest included here, features Hellboy in his younger days and also has some interesting teases to larger issues of character and narrative. Like Kurt Busiek's Astro City these is both enormous value in the big picture as well as the smaller, more narrow view of focus on a single character; Mignola excels at playing these two seemigly contradictory methodologies against each other and thus rewards the longtime reader while still serving up excellent storries that can stand alone. Mood Swings is another early tale of Hellboy except he's not the focus of the story, a young Liz Sherman is front and center and Chelsea Cain provides and enormously entertaining holiday themed story that shows how multilayered and complex these characters are, without having to sacrifice even a nuance of humor, wit or horror. Rounding out the collection a silly little 2-page story starring everyone's favorite depression era vigilante Lobster Johnson as he orders Chinese take-out. Kung Pao Lobster reminds us that sometimes you just can't get what you want, but don't take life too seriously. Mike Mignola and team really knocked this anthology out of the park. They could have just delivered some simple cute, clever stories for the fans instead of digging in the psyche and the mythology of the Mignolaverse. Instead they broke some new ground and teased the readers with new connections and insights, that's what makes these types of things the most rewarding. Job well done!

Невеличкий щорічник ”Геллбоя” вміщає в собі аж чотири історії, але дивніше ще й те, що події усіх чотирьох відбуваються в різних часах — за кілька тисяч років до нашої ери, 1953 рік, 1975 рік і в 1942 році.
І в цьому основна проблема, адже як відомо , у нас вийшло тільки перше бібліотечне видання, котре проливає лиш трохи світла на історію Червоного Демона. В той час, як цей щорічник, зачіпає історії двох окремих персонажів, про котрих в оригінальній серії бібліотечних видань “Геллбой” і не йдеться.
Хто ж ці герої?
Ґал Деннар. Що б познайомитись з цим героєм, читачеві необхідно прочитати весь оригінальний ран “Геллбоя” і більше десяти томів “БПРО”. Як бачимо з сюжету, це такий собі доісторичний Конан Варвар, на що вказує прізвище його аватара в майбутньому — Говардс. Що й не дивно, адже, якщо уважно читати, то у творіннях Міньйоли можна знайти численні окультні алюзії та посилання на його улюблених авторів — Лавкрафта, По, Мільтона, Блейка, Говарда.
Іншим, невідомим для українського читача персонажем геллбойверсу є Лобстер Джонсон — нуарний супергерой-віджиланте, часів палп фікшну. Лобстер це пафосний борець за справедливість, котрий з таємничих причин ніяк не може вмерти, а ще має свій коронний знак — відмітину у вигляді клешні лобстера, яку він лишає на чолах вбитих негідників. Двосторінкова карикатура на Лобстера, поміщена в даному щорічнику говорить про героя вельми мало і може бути зрозуміла, хіба після прочитання хоча б одного тому його пригод (видайте Лобстера Джонсона українською!)
Дві інші історії вже більш зрозумілі для україномовного читача — це пригоди ще зовсім молодого Геллбоя, котрі відбувались ще до приходу Распутіна і віднайдення Абрахама Сапієна. Цікава історію про дитячі роки молодої Ліз Шерман і проявлення її дару піромантії.
Отож, цей щорічник, то такий собі мікс з різних часових проміжків і його важко зрозуміти у відриві від основних лінійок. З іншого боку, він може бути заохоченням для читачів дізнатись більше про його героїв і ще раз показує нам, що Геллбойверс — це не тільки Великий Червоний, а ще багато інших не менш цікавих персонажів.
З малюнку, мені особливо сподобався Тім Сейл і його дуже вдала стилізація під Міньйолу. Майкл Омінґа теж видає цікаві панелі і ще з’явиться в інших серіях коміксу.
Після прочитання коміксу може з’явитись враження, що для читача лиш привідчинили двері в прекрасний новий світ, що й відповідає дійсності. І якщо у вас виникне питання, як же все таки читати цей велетенський масив серій, то тримайте просту пораду — спершу варто повністю прочитати оригінальний ран “Геллбоя”, а вже від нього можна танцювати — читати пряме продовження у вигляді “БРПО”, або “Мисливця на відьом Едварда Ґрея” , або “Лобстера Джонсона”, або оригінальні графічні романи, котрих теж назбиралось багатенько.
Власне усі комікси за Геллбоєм в Україні випускає видавництво Vovkulaka, і цей сингл не став виключенням. До поліграфічного виконання та оформлення запитань немає, тут все зроблено на найвищому рівні. А от із темпами виходу нових частин хотілося би краще, але реальність вносить свої корективи.
Існують три потужні і багатогранні серії, котрі можна читати і досліджувати довгі роки : “Інкал” Алехандро Ходоровскі , “Сендмен” Ніла Ґеймана і “Геллбой” Майка Міньйоли. Тому дуже добре, що всі три серії по-тихеньку вже почали видавати в нас. Залишається побажати наснаги видавцям і читацького запалу читачам.

Having not read a lot of Hellboy comics in the past I imagine the stories collected in this book have characters associated with past plots so a real fan of Mike Mignola might enjoy this book even more but I still enjoyed the stories though short they generally were.
In the first story, Broken Vessels, I didn't even see the big red guy as it focuses on some plains dwellers of which one has a robe chained with human skulls.
The second story, Wandering Souls, shows the main dude teaming up with a psychic to investigate reports of specters and find themselves on a bit of an old scavenger hunt.
Story three, Mood Swings, involves Hellboy and a young Liz Sherman (a pyrotechnic shown in the movie) showing some Christmas cheer while fighting parasitic snowman monstrosities.
Finally the last story was kind of strange with a character I do not recall and a completely different art style. Called Kung Pao Lobster the short is pretty basic with an armed man trying to order Chinese food but discovering the selection is limited as is the patience of his host.

Broken Vessels: 1 star
This is a couple page comic about the barbarian wielder of the Hyperborean sword meeting a crazy magic man who is trying to utilize magic from bones of magical ancestors. This was a pointless comic because nothing relevant happens and it provides no new information about the hyperborea sword or welder.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1953 - Wandering Souls - 3 stars
This was a BPRD story with Hellboy and Susan investigating a haunted coal tipple and finding it haunted by ghosts of Chinese immigrant workers who were massacred. This was short but well written and the action scenes were good. I liked this one.
Mood Swings- 2 stars
This was a short story with Hellboy trying to give teenage Liz a good Christmas but instead are attacked by parasite infected snowmen. It was an ok story.
Kuang Pao Lobster - 2 stars

June 8, 2024These were originally created as winter one-off specials that contained 3 short stories on a seasonal theme (although set around the world the more often than not focused on the winter season) which although could easily fit in to the wider hellboy timeline were treated as standalone.
Each book (I have from 2016 to 2019) focused on different themes, places and times and although often had characters you saw before do not reference anything in the winder literature.
As with such one-shots creative team changes and for once I think the 3 short stories actually benefit from this as you realise they are intended to be on their own (Is it me or not that hates when you follow a series and the artist or storytelling style changes mid series?)

Декілька доволі файних історій, комікс легко читається, найбільше сподобалась остання комедійна історія. Понад усе мене радує те, що видавництво «Vovkulaka» не забила на Геллбоя, ба навіть взялась за щорічні спецвипуски, що доповнюють історію прибульця з пекла.
Як завжди видавництву за поширення українських коміксів серед молоді.
Декілька доволі файних історій, комікс легко читається, найбільше сподобалась остання комедійна історія. Понад усе мене радує те, що видавництво «Vovkulaka» не забила на Геллбоя, ба навіть взялась за щорічні спецвипуски, що доповнюють історію прибульця з пекла.
Як завжди видавництву за поширення українських коміксів серед молоді.

Four enjoyable short stories (wasn’t entirely sure what the first one was saying though). The standout here is definitely Wandering Souls, gave me the same kind of vibes as Stephen King's Desperation.

A good comic which keep the spirit of what short stories should be. It pushes into the lore and mythology of Hellboy verse and give us some backstories and adventures about important side characters such as Liz. I liked it.

Kind of a mixed bag. Snowgeists, parasites that take over unattended snowmen, are such a fun idea, though.

Це збірка з кількох зимових історій зі світу червоного чорта, від різних авторів. Такий формат дуже круто заходить, коли хочеться чогось легкого та атмосферного почитати.
Історії про різні часи та різних персонажів, але всі вони чудово доповнюють всесвіт Геллбоя та мають якусь цікаву інформацію, яка точно варта уваги, якщо вам подобається світ, створений Майком Міньйолою. Та й навіть якщо ви вперше стикнулися з ним – все одно буде цікаво.
Малюнок досить схожий в кожного з випусків, хоча малювали різні люди. Але це зрозуміло, бо художники явно намагалися підлаштовуватися під стиль Міньйоли. Мушу визнати – вийшло в них дуже непогано. Особливо у Сейла, який в принципі має з Міньйолою багато спільного.
Загалом цей сингл вийшов дуже заєбісь.

Good! So this one takes place shortly after Hellboy and The B.R.P.D: 1952, it collects two stories one being a serious story set in Alaska, second one a more cartoony fun one. Both stories were decent. Overall a okay read.
