Ron Ripley is a husband and father surviving in New England, a place which seems to be getting colder every day. He grew up across from a disturbingly large cemetery where he managed to scare himself every night before going to bed. Mostly because of the red lights that people put in front of the headstones. Those things are just plain creepy to a kid.
Ron enjoys writing horror, military history and driving through the small towns of New England with his family, collecting books and giving impromptu lectures on military history to his family, who enjoy ignoring him during those dreadful times.
Brian & Jenny are looking to start over after Brian has two heart attacks by the age of 40. Moving away from the city and slowing their pace down, they purchase an old farm house.
From the first evening into their new life, things are NOT right. After seeing and hearing things they can't explain. Finding a graveyard in their basement tops things off. They call in a friend that works with paranormal environments. Brian and Jenny's fears are confirmed, they are residing within a family of pissed off ghosts. Ruled by a little boy, who died several years ago.
The fight for their lives is about to be unleashed in a paranormal hell on Earth. Brian & Jenny come face to face with pure evil and their lives is all the ghosts want.
This book is one hell of a creepy story. I still don't know if deep down I believe in paranormal activity. I hope I never have my beliefs challenged. It is safe to say I would wet my pants if confronted with the other side!!
Book 1 of the Moving In Series . This was the start of something so creepy good, fabulous writing Mr Ripley!
In my mind it is Halloween year round. I want to read scary books, watch scary movies, and just be scared. I have a Christmas tree with the Halloween theme, so I'm serious about this.
This was a quick read, definitely could read it in one sitting. I really feel like there could have been more background information on the ghosts living in the house (oh yeah, this is a ghost story). I wanted to know more about Paul and his family and the barn. It left a lot of unanswered questions. I do think I'll continue with the series just because fuck it why not? Even if you're not into scary or spooky, I would still recommend! It wasn't gory or anything suuuuuper spooky.
It started out so hilarious. I love Brian and Jenny; the main characters. They were really cracking me up. Then the action starts up and the ghost leaves no time for you to get bored. Still you laugh at some of the characters bewilderment at first. Things come together and get more spooky and the story really starts to rock from there. I really liked some of the later characters. They were especially interesting. I'm going to keep with these two in the series. Can't wait to see what they will have going on next.
I would have liked a little more backstory about the ghosts & what had happened to them. This was a quick little read & although I found it interesting, it wasn't my favourite Ron Ripley.
The book started off very well, and i liked the concept and i was able to visualize things.. later things got a bit messy and the pace was very fast and somethings dint seem real and there were a lot of killings which i felt was too much... enjoyed the first 1/3rd of the book but could have been a better.

Ron Ripley is definitely one of my top 5 writers. For fans of his Berkeley Street series you will also enjoy the start to this series. Just like with his other books the author builds great characters both human and ghost.
I was hooked from the beginning. I grew up hearing ghost stories and would go riding around the back roads with my aunts looking for ghosts. Good times for sure. This book reminded me of those times. The story captivated me though, at times, it seemed like there were more characters than I could keep up with. I put that down to some places have more ghosts than others. I thought Brian and Jenny were realistic, average people, though Jenny did react weirdly at times. I took that to be a part of her personality. Maybe not the way I would react but then we all have quirks and our own ways of dealing with stressful situations. The characters of Sam and Leo I enjoyed the most. The ghosts were well written. I liked that some were good and others were evil. That goes with every good ghost story I heard growing up. I wouldn't call the book absolutely horrifying but it does have its moments. I liked that not every encounter had me terrified. In my opinion that is what made it realistic. I enjoyed this narrator. He varied his voice for characters and scenes. Sometimes in listening to a book, I can fall asleep. It is the narrator who makes a difference for me. This narrator, Andrew Tell, kept me awake and invested. I think he was a good match for the story. I purchased this for my Kindle but then was given the Audible version for review purposes, (I do not receive any type of compensation for my reviews. They consist of my true feelings and thoughts while reading or listening to a book.) I have to say I absolutely loved listening to it with the lights off. That definitely was a treat. If you like to hear creepy ghost stories in the dark then I definitely recommend getting this book from Audible. I am planning on reading more of this series, hopefully listening in the dark!
This was incredibly scary and creepy and I enjoyed every second of it, though I couldn't listen to it at night ;)
When Brian and Jenny move into a house in the country because of Brian's heart, they never expected to get more than they paid for! As soon as they move in they realise that something isn't right in their house and thy have some unexpected guests! Then they find a grave yard in their basement, the basement that keeps opening by itself!! What is going on and just who is the incredibly creepy ass kid!!
This was a really quick listen though didn't feel like it as so much was happening and so many different characters were introduced, some living but most dead!! The characters (both living and dead) were well written and developed. I really liked Brian and Jenny, though I have to say that Leo was my favourite even though he wasn't introduced till near the end!!
The plot was really fast paced and addicting. You are brought into the action right from the start and it doesn't stop till the very end. The ghosts were all so creepy but none more so than Sam. He totally freaked me out!!!
In all, a well written story that gave me chills. This is an author that I need to check out and see more of their books!! Definitely recommend, though maybe not at night!!!
Thom Bowers has sealed himself as one of my favourite narrators. He is easy to listen to and always gives his all when telling a story. He has plenty of tones and voices and always knows when to use the right one at the right time! I recommend him to anyone wanting to start out listening to audios.
*I received a copy of this for review from the narrator, author or publisher for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*
Review: MOVING IN by Ron Ripley (Moving In Book 1)
I totally enjoyed this story, a one-sitting riveting read. Mr. Ripley has a special talent for approaching the supernatural, as demonstrated in THE BOYLAN HOUSE TRILOGY and SHERMAN'S LIBRARY TRILOGY. MOVING IN is just jam-packed with ghosts, some lovely and some definitely not so, so naturally I just loved it. The living are pretty lively too. I especially enjoyed the characters of Samuel and Leo.
Fortunately, our beleaguered householders Brian and Jenny take up the call, and will reappear in a new installment. Can't wait!
I just discovered this writer and have been tearing through his books. This particular one is about a husband and wife who move into a house and ghosts start appearing. When you read enough of his books you learn about his universe of ghosts and magic and I think he has done a great job. I found his Boylan House book to be a little spookier but I like the characters in this one a lot.
This author has a great talent for writing ghost stories.
Spooky but it was clearly left with a cliffhanger. This book is the first of 6 in the series and I didn’t feel I wanted to finish the series. It was a fast read, spooky and had alternative storylines in the back of the book. I read the e-book version and I don’t know if the print versions had that. I wasn’t fond of the cliffhanger but otherwise it was an ok haunted house story.
Brian moves his family to the country to escape the hustle and bustle of City living. Soon strange things begin to happen, and he finds a dead body in the woods. He then finds out his house is a burial ground (in the basement). Once he learns the secrets of this house, he begins to wonder if the move was the right thing to do.
An original story that moves at a fast pace with likable characters and a lot of thrills and chills. I found Moving In to be an enjoyable read and feel those who love a great ghost story will enjoy this as well.
After Brian has a heart attack before age 40, he and his wife Jenny move to the peaceful countryside to escape the stress of the city. He has reduced his workload and arranged to work from home; Jenny has a job in the new location. But peace is not what they find; immediately, Brian finds the basement door opening itself every time he closes- and latches- it. Then a dead body is found on his property. Next an invisible entity starts pouring him drinks in the kitchen, as if to say “Here, you’re going to need this!” Problems accelerate from there, as he finds a graveyard hidden in the basement and an evil entity in the barn. Things get worse from there, and a couple of psychics join the fray.
This is short for a novel. I had high hopes at first, with the opening doors and spooky things. But things moved extremely fast; too fast, really. Soon there are so many people, dead and alive, that it’s hard to follow who is who. While there is tension and danger, things get resolved a little too easily- although not without losses. This is the first of a series, and it has the flaws that a lot of introductory stories have. The characters aren’t developed at all, but they have some promise. It kind of reminded me of old pulp stories, really, which isn’t really a bad thing.
So, this is the first time I have read a paranormal themed book! Although I never had a keen interest in reading paranormal stuff, I wouldn’t say I didn’t like the genre altogether. It was the cover of this book and the name written in an attractive red font that caught my attention while I was surfing for books in the Kindle store! I must say the cover is well designed and the font used for the title instantly suggests that this is a horror read!
From the name, the book seemed very interesting to me. And, when it began with the protagonists shifting to their new house and experiencing weird things, it really aroused more interest. Some incidents such as the opening of the basement door despite Brian closing it repeatedly were surely spooky and scary.
An enjoyable albeit very short read. However, things moved much too quickly with little tension or build up and left me feeling little suspense or horror. The characters felt much too flat and cardboard to really invest in them, and things wrap up too easily and quickly. Jenny was a prime example, who I was left feeling like I knew nothing about this character and didn't contribute much to the plot.
Aside from these gripes (along with the constant comma splices!), I did read this over two sessions. The plot keeps you invested and coming back for more.
Enjoyable overall for fans of horror and paranormal.
Can't remember when I have enjoyed a HORROR book as much. It is what it promises to be, THRILLER SCARY and pure unadulterated HORROR. MY first book by this author (Ron Ripley) I will HAPPILY RECOMMEND TO MY FRIENDS and ACQUAINTANCES. This story takes place in an old country house bought by a couple looking for peace and quite, as he is recuperating from two previous heart attacks. They find everything but peace and DEATH WAITS FOR NO MAN. Hope you enjoy this tale also...I RECOMMEND.
A new family moves into a house that no one has been able to live in...ever.They are not told about this when they buy the house. How does one explain the strange disapearances within the house and deaths of people and animals on the land? There are a few people in the know, including some resident ghosts.A young boy ghost seems to be the catalyst for the whole thing. He was not the good boy his friends thought he was. This is a great ghost story.I can not wait for our great narrator,Andrew Tell to tell us the next story! I was given this book free for an honest review.
I loved this book! Despite a few editing errors, this was a very good story. I became completely absorbed in this story. The characters are unique and interesting. Fast paced and easy to read. I don't repeat parts of a book in my reviews, and dislike when others do so. I highly recommend giving Mr. Ripleys books a try. Looking forward to more. I am not necessarily a fan of the horror genre, but am becoming a Ripley fan.
Book not very long but is packed full of ghosts and action. I have never read this author before. I cannot wait for book 2 to come out next month. Brian and Jenny moved out of the city into a house they bought. They found out their new homes has a graveyard in the basement and a load of ghosts in the house and an evil kid ghost outside. Loved this book.
This was one of those kind of ghost stories I could not put down. Ron Ripley did a great job at spooking me that's for sure, though I would have loved to known more about Brian and Jess prior to moving to the house.
Moving In was certainly a spooky ghost story full of ghosts and a malevolent one that controlled the others to stay rather than move on. It is a quick read and I look forward to reading more of Ripleys work.
Um, yeah, this is a bad book. No offense to Mr. Ripley, but I didn't like the setup, didn't like the characters, didn't like the plot. It's very surface level with the most interesting character being the spiritualist. Things move way too fast. There's no build-up. No tension. It was really wasn't a good read. I tried reading the follow-up to see if the tone improved, but it just got worse, so I abandoned it.
