Emily Wren is dealing with major milestones in her life; graduating from college, dealing with the loss of a soul mate, battling vampires to protect the remaining ones. Is their bond psychic or does she possess a unique brand of telepathy? She embraces her new special abilities to help keep them safe but her magic takes a toll. And in doing so, will she have to give up her own dreams? One of the soul mates learns the truth behind his attachment. Will it be the ammo he needs to surpass his rival or the justification required to walk away? Knowing the outcome could have devastating consequences on his love life. Her super immortal protector deals with more treachery in the realm between reality and the tangible and takes drastic measures to combat a growing darkness in his realm as the mystery deepens. He also has a solution for the dilemma Emily’s facing but when his plans to match her ‘extra’ soul mate with someone else hit a snag, will he have to start from scratch? Read Blackout, full of thrills and suspense, the fifth book in the Luminary Saga by P.S. Meraux
P.S. Meraux writes books about paranormal chaos, sassy heroines, and creatures who are just a little unhinged (in the best way). She's an Indie and Amazon bestselling author—which sounds fancy until you realize it just means she drinks too much coffee and argues with fictional people for a living. Her stories mix sci-fi, mystery, romance, and a generous helping of “wait, did that just happen?”
P.S. has a thing for supernatural oddballs, morally gray weirdos, and badass women who save themselves (and occasionally punch vampires in the face). Her idea of worldbuilding is "let's break everything and see what grows back."
Originally from South Carolina, she now lives in Atlanta, Georgia, where her backyard is suspiciously full of fireflies and dubiously English for someone not living in a BBC period drama. There may or may not be faeries. There is definitely sarcasm.
I really love the writing in this book and series. P.S. Meraux's writing style feels more like some kind of an excavation of the personality of the characters rather than a disciplined sculpture of them like maybe they're revealing their emotions, actions and personalities by degrees as the story progresses, like getting to know real people. I get so drawn in that I lose all track of time.
Are the Paragons right about David not being the soul mate for Emily? Do they have the right to keep them apart? Will Emily survive her training as a witch? What is unsettling the Paragons' realm?
I appreciate how the author now has me hooked on these characters. I'm invested in them, find myself thinking about them even when I'm not reading about their exploits! How's that for realism? I like that Emily doesn't freak out too much by the changes taking place in her allowing her to be a witch. She's like a cross between Hermione Granger and Bella Swan--but she's her own self, if that makes sense. This story is totally unique. I mean she's an average girl who wants to keep those that she loves safe. Yet she's becoming a witch! She's smart, realistic and likeable. There's more adventure in this book than earlier ones in the series....well more adventure for Emily. I like that just because of this transformation that she doesn't know instantly what to do in terms of magic and that she has to sorta feel her way forward, make mistakes and try again. She's a little sarcastic too, not some simpering character waiting for the world to do her bidding. She's got an attitude without being a total bitch about it. She still hasn't decided on which soul mate to choose which heightened the suspense for me. I think she's a little scared of letting either of them go. Again, the characters are believable. I find myself alternating between liking her mentor, Myling, and suspecting the worst about her. I guess that's part of Meraux's way of keeping me guessing. Oh, and this is a much longer book, I guess because the story line is epic. But it didn't feel long. I didn't expect it to end the way it did, which had my heart go out to David. It's obvious how much he truly loves her. I want the next book right now!!!
