This is an excellent book by a young new author from Michigan. The book is advertised as christian historical fiction so it fits neatly into that genre. You could probably guess just by reading it that the author is a history and religion teacher at a parochial K-8 school. Some of the religion and some of the history does not blend well into the story but enough of it does. There is really no antagonist except for the battle of Gettysburg and the war itself. Conflict and problems wrap themselves up quickly sometimes and neatly all the time without the reader getting to feel too much anxiety. So now that I have dwelt too long on the negative, I will tell you that this book is worth reading, you will love the characters, they are drawn for you vividly. I plan on reading the next book and the third when it comes out. I think that this author should keep writing and keep reading she has great potential.

I flew through this book! A fictional account of the families of Gettysburg, from before the war to the end, was well written and riveting. The book contains characters based on actual citizens of Gettysburg, and from that framework the author painted the realities of living with a war that was suddenly thrust upon its citizens.
When I first opened this book and saw the number of pages, 486, my heart sunk. I'd recently read a very long (and not very well written) book that was difficult to plow through. This book is just the opposite!

The format is wonderful; not quite chapters, but more like a series of vignettes and letters from multiple characters' perpectives. It's easy to read a few pages and then put down--well, sometimes. Otherwise, I would read just a bit more, just a bit more...then I found myself with a finished book at two in the morning. Dynamic characters, history, plot twists and turns all masterfully woven together. Once I began reading, I didn't want to step away for too long.

Such a great read

My friend and I each bought thus book when we met Marie at a craft show at Uncle John's Cider Mill in St. Johns, MI. I gave mine as a birthday gift, then downloaded a copy for myself on my Kindle.
The whole book was so well written that I hated to put it down. Looking forward to reading the next one. Keep up the great work. You are an amazing writer.
