Some people say that you cannot teach design. Modern practices are aimed more at opening up students' awareness to possibilities, rather than teaching them precise methods and theories. Certainly, design is a very personal thing, for we all see life in quite different ways and respond to different stimuli. It may then seem foolhardy to put one person's approach to design into a book. I have done so because many people are interested in designing their own laces, but are uncertain how to get started. Knowing the feeling only too well, I hope to explain and illustrate many easy ways to tackle the subject.
