Rate this book
Kenzie Rhines doesn't have a home--she has too many. Her dad's job keeps them flying around the country, which means "home" is whatever fancy hotel they're currently staying in and "school" takes place 30,000 feet in the air. And since it's just the two of them, she has no choice but to be his travel partner. Kenzie loves the constant adventures, but she wouldn't mind planting her feet in one place for longer than two seconds, having her own bed, and maybe even finding a best friend she can talk to.

When Kenzie's dad surprises her with the news that they'll be in Las Vegas for an extended business trip, she's thrilled he wants to enroll her in a local middle school while they're there. And even though it's the longest she's been in one place in years, Kenzie knows it's only a matter of time before she's on the move yet again. So, for the first time in her life, she decides to take some risks: why not let the cutest boy in school know she's got a bit of a crush on him, give it a shot and audition for the school musical--The Wizard of Oz (her all-time favorite movie), and run for VP of her class?

Thanks to her plan, Kenzie discovers a courage she didn't know she had--and finally feels like she belongs somewhere. But when things start to get complicated, Kenzie discovers that she'll have to face the consequences of everything she's done since her arrival.

I received an advance reviewer copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Author Dee Romito is a 100% tween girl whisperer! As with her debut novel, THE BFF BUCKET LIST, she creates characters who are as real as they are lovable. In NO PLACE LIKE HOME, 12 year-old Kenzie and her dad live out of suitcases, hopscotching across the country 365 days a year. So when she suddenly gets to stay in one place for six whole weeks, she might just go a teensy bit overboard when it comes to finally getting to experience middle school. And who could blame her?!

But when her six weeks start winding down and the lies she's told start to catch up with her, Kenzie can't wait to rush right back on the road. Running away is a perfectly acceptable way of dealing with problems, right? Except when her dad announces yet another surprise, Kenzie has to find a strength she didn't know she had.

I absolutely adored NO PLACE LIKE HOME and middle grade readers will, too. Highly recommend! Coming September 19, 2017.

One of the best qualities of fiction is its ability to allow you to walk in someone else's shoes, to spend a few hours living a life quite unlike your own. Well, I might wish that I got to spend a bit more of my time jet-setting across the country, staying in fancy hotels, dining out at chic restaurants like fortunate seventh grader Kenzie Rhines. Kenzie's dad travels a ton for work -- pretty much all the time -- so since her mother's passing three years ago, she's tagged along, forgoing traditional school in favor of a life in hotels and flying first class. As fun as it sounds, Kenzie feels something missing from her life, and when she has the chance to attend a real middle school in Las Vegas for six weeks, she jumps at the chance. Will she find the grass greener on the other side?

Romito's sophomore stand-alone is a heartfelt exploration of what really matters in life and the true meaning of home. Middle schoolers will enjoy the wish-fulfillment aspects of the story, as well as the self-reflection it inspires.

A review by Novalee, 10 yrs old:

This novel, No Place Like Home, is an outstanding piece of work by Dee Romito, who is the author of The BFF Bucket List. This book seemed real. These details seemed to come from someone who had lived it all. Though this is realistic fiction, as I read the book, I felt like Kenzie, who is the main character.

Kenzie is a girl with no real home. She describes her home(s) as first class hotels. Her mother died, and now she and her father travel all over for his business. She is in a new place for a few days, tops. Las Vegas is different. She was surprised when her father told her they were staying for six weeks. That meant going to middle school, which was new for Kenzie, because she was homeschooled by her father.

As Kenzie walked into middle school for the first time ever, she immediately met some new people, though she deemed it unimportant to tell her newfound friends, because she did not want to risk being alone.

Kenzie was faced with bullies, debates, clubs, and everything you would expect in middle school. As she finally plucked up the courage to tell her father everything and ask him to move, he surprised her first. He had got a permanent job, and they are staying, though her father wants to know if Kenzie has to make a tough call. Travel first class with her dad, or stay in Las Vegas with her friends and keep going to middle school?

People who enjoyed the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series would probably enjoy this. Greg and Kenzie are both going to middle school and they both don’t know what to expect.

I think my favorite part was when she described the middle school. I wondered if middle school is really like that, with all those classes, clubs, and large halls.

I was lucky to read an ARC of No Place Like Home.

I completely love Kenzie--she's sweet and smart, she loves her friends, and she loves her dad.

I can't wait to share this book with young readers.

An utterly charming middle grade novel!
Kenzie Rhimes leads an exciting life, flying around with her father all over the country while he does consulting work. Home is a series of hotel rooms, complete with VIP treatment. Dad is her tutor and field trips can be the Lincoln Memorial in DC one weekend or the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota the next. However, what 12-years-old Kenzie doesn't have is a room of her own or a best friend. She gets that chance when her father has a 6-week job in Las Vegas. Kenzie decides to go all and do everything middle school has to offer. The way she navigates middle school life, especially the way she deals with big secrets, packs a emotional punch. Highly recommended.

"...life is kind of like an airport. Plenty of people will land in your life, and others will take off to new destinations for one reason or another. Some flights won't matter much at all, just another listing on the screen, while some departures will break your heart into a million tiny pieces that only time can heal. But then there are the delays that maybe are the best thing you didn't even know you needed."

This is one of the many astute observations of 12-year-old protagonist Kenzie in this sweet, funny, and thoroughly contemporary middle-grade novel. Dee Romito so perfectly captures the angst and the innocence of middle school and the inner turmoil of a 12-year-old who has traveled for years with her corporate widowed father and now has the chance to be a regular kid in a real middle school for 6 weeks. Cute and diverse characters throughout, but Kenzie is the one who captured my heart.
Love the O'Henry-esque twist, the refreshing take on life with a single parent (finally, a dad!) and the nod to Wizard of Oz, which figures in the book in many ways. No Place Like Home is a joy for young girls and adults alike. :)

Funny and heartfelt, this is a book about taking risks making friends, and making mistakes. I loved the cast of interesting characters and the introspective, funny and cool main character. A great read for any kid who has ever wanted a chance at a different life.

As someone who moved a lot growing up, I was immediately sucked in and sympathetic to Kenzie's story in No Place Like Home. All Kenzie wants is to have a regular middle school experience, but that hasn't been possible with her constant travel in connection with her Dad's job. So when an opportunity to go to the same school for six weeks in a row presents, Kenzie takes full advantage, filling her social calendar with school commitments--commitments that she won't be able to keep once she hits the road again. How will her new friends react when they discover that Kenzie hasn't been honest about how long she'll stick around? This is a fast, sweet read with great themes of friendship, trust, and home--a fabulous follow-up to Dee Romito's debut, The BFF Bucket List.

Kid rating: 4 stars
Adult rating: 3 stars

Cute book from Aladdin Mix, but not my favorite. It was a little too far-fetched and I have a tendency to zero in on absurd plots. Kids are way less critical about that sort of thing. Girls who want nothing but realistic books about school, friendship, and crushes will definitely go for this.

Ever since Kenzie's mom died she's been traveling with her dad on his job projects. She gets to visit cool cities and stay in first class accommodations. They don't stay in one place long enough to enroll in school so her dad homeschools her on the road. Then she gets the news that the Las Vegas project is going to take 6 weeks. Kenzie is excited to go back to school and get involved in activities with other kids. She makes friends right away, lands the lead role in the school play, gets elected to the student government. and joins the book club. The problem is that no one knows she's leaving in 6 weeks. She can only hold onto her secret for so long and she's dreading the inevitable moment when she has to come clean.

Kenzie's personality isn't realistic. She's happy and well-adjusted. In reality, a kid would be noticeably affected by all this moving around. When she's faced with the decision to finally stay put or continue traveling, she actually has to think about it. Then there's the setting. A total missed opportunity to showcase Las Vegas. It's barely mentioned. The setting could be any city and it wouldn't change the story. Two thumbs up for the title. The Wizard of Oz is a big part of the story.

No Place Like Home is one of those books that creeps into your heart, and you can't help but fall in love with the characters. You're rooting so hard for a happy ending, and you want so much to fix everything and make everyone understand.

Kenzie has what looks like an amazing life to everyone around her--she's travels around the country on First Class flights, stays in 5-star hotels, and everyone around her jumps to get her anything she wants (and more!). But what she's missing is a home. And while most of us take our homes and our lives and experiences for granted, Kenzie sees how special it is because she doesn't have it.

So when she gets the chance to go to middle school for 6 whole weeks, she jumps at it . . . and dives into trying everything the school has to offer: the school musical, student government, etc., etc. The only problem is, she doesn't tell anyone that she'll be gone in 6 weeks.

What I loved about this story is that Kenzie knew from the beginning she should confess the truth, but it was more fun and easier to just stay quiet. It can be easy to forget just how much our actions can affect others, and this book does not take the easy route. Kenzie has to face the full force of the consequences of her actions, and that is something we don't always see in books.

This story is so perfectly middle grade, and I have no doubt that kids (and adults) everywhere will fall in love with Kenzie and her crazy, exciting, hard, complicated, fascinating life!

When globe-trotting 7th-grader, Kenzie Rhines, finally settles for six weeks in Las Vegas with her widowed father, she’s excited about attending a real middle school. She’s being brave and bold, trying to overcome her stage fright by auditioning for the school musical, The Wizard of Oz, and joining as many extracurricular activities as she can. Problems start multiplying when she purposely forgets to share she’s only staying for the short term. Kenzie finds friends and exciting new challenges, but perhaps she needs a lesson on keeping them. Or else she’ll never truly have a place to call home again! Ms. Romito presents a fast-paced MG adventure, set not only in Las Vegas, but with numerous national stops along the way. Her characters are likeable and totally believable. Readers will be more than happy to go along for the ride and discover along with Kenzie what the true importance of friendship really means.

'No Place Like Home' is a predictable but sweet junior novel. The following two reflective and inspiring quotes from the end of the book happily increased my rating from three stars to four stars.

"Home isn't about a pin on a map. It's the place you can't wait to get back to after you've been away. It's the people you can't wait to get back to, even after your biggest adventure."

A feel good book about friendship, family, and what it means to fit in. Because of her father's job, Kenzie is constantly traveling and has no true home. So when dad has the opportunity to stay in one place for six weeks, Kenzie decides to get involved in as much middle school life as possible. But her new friends don't realize that she'll be gone before she can follow through on all of her commitments, and Kenzie worries about the consequences that await her when they find out.

Romito does an amazing job of capturing the middle school voice and emotions, with relatable characters dealing with true to life feelings. I read it aloud to my 6th grade son and we both laughed out loud at several parts, and I definitely had tears in my eyes in a few places. The relationship between Kenzie and her dad was refreshing and sweet, and I loved watching her navigate through the difficult road of middle school. Highly recommend!

No Place Like Home tells the story of Kenzie, a 12-year-old girl who lives a glamorous life. After her mom's death, Kenzie's father swore he'd no longer let his business trips keep them apart. This has led to a life of hotel rooms and tourist attractions. When Kenzie's dad gets a short-term gig in Vegas, she gets to try out life as a middle school student for six weeks. But instead of telling all her new friends she's only there temporarily, she gets caught up in the courage being a short-termer gives her, trying out for the school play and running for class VP. I loved the father-daughter relationship in this one, as well as the lesson that kids can learn from Kenzie's bravery.

This story is as cute and fun as its cover! The characters are so well drawn and relatable; definitely took me back to some of my middle school experiences! I loved reading about Kenzie's unconventional life on the road, and her struggles, joys, and risk-taking in settling down to a "normal" life. Her experiences with friendship and fitting in will no doubt ring true for many. A great read for kids of all ages; get this on your TBR for when it releases in September!

This book was fun, funny, and sweet with a highly satisfying emotional journey - the hallmark of a Dee Romito book! I read a chapter a night over the phone with my eight-year-old niece and she always asked for 'just one more chapter'! Romito captures the middle grade voice perfectly. I felt like I was right there with Kenzie through her turmoil of wanting just one place to call home. It's a book that underscores the importance of the phrase 'home is where the heart is'. Looking forward to more great reads from this author!

Oooooh! Such a fun book! No Place Like Home is the charming story of Kenzie, a jet-setting twelve-year-old who is given the opportunity to be a "regular" middle school kid. Kenzie shines with heart, spunk, and wit - everything one could want from a MG main character. The story is a sweet tale about friendship, family, and the meaning of home. Don't miss this one!

There is no place like home. A place where you feel connected to family and friends. A place where love lives, with walls that have tales to tell of countless memories and milestones celebrated. At the very least, a place to call your own. A place where you belong. Home. For Kenzie Rhines, home is wherever her dad's job takes them that moment, in whatever hotel they choose.

When her dad receives a longer assignment in Las Vegas, Kenzie gets to put her peripatetic lifestyle on hold and enjoy the thrills of middle school. Or shall we say the ups and downs and drama of middle school; being the new girl, auditioning for the school musical, having a big secret revealed. Will this finally be a place where Kenzie can fit in, make friends, and live a normal life-at least for a little while?

This is the perfect middle grade read for elementary students looking for a glimpse into middle school life and for those older students who are already in the mix.
