Kneel, first of all. Man’s knees are the first instrument: as soon as you kneel, your soul at once soars up, and there, being thus elevated, you must bow down to the ground, as many times as you can, till you are exhausted, and wear yourself out with fasting, to mortify yourself, and when the devil sees you striving for a great deed, he will not endure it and will run away at once, for fear that with such a man his machinations will drive him still more directly to Christ…
“It was a tavern — but unlike the ones I knew. This one looked like a stage set: everything too clean, too golden. The curtains were velvet, the lamps swayed gently like fireflies, and the people — well, they weren't people I knew. They sparkled, in their own way. All of them young, laughing, like they'd never known morning headaches or unpaid debts. I walked slowly along the wall, not knowing if I was welcome or invisible. Then someone saw me. A man in a sky-blue coat with silver trim — the kind a circus magician might wear — turned, raised his glass, and smiled like we were old friends. he called out. “There you are at last!” And with that, everyone turned and clapped. I looked behind me, confused, but there was no one else. The applause was for me. Before I could react, a woman in a deep red dress slid over, slipped her arm through mine, and said in a voice so smooth it barely touched the air: “Don't be shy. “We've been waiting for you.” I didn't know what to say. Didn't know whether to laugh, run, or ask what kind of dream I'd stumbled into. “But how… how did you know I'd come?” I muttered. She only smiled, and with her free hand picked up a silver tray from a nearby table—on it sat a tiny glass of something emerald-green and glowing. “Drink,” she said. “It's time you remembered.” I hesitated. (pp. 89-90).And so it goes on, in the same vein as with The Eagles. I looked it up, but I can't find a reference to this (possible) link anywhere online. Oh well, maybe I'm just imagining things. Anyway, Leskov can't claim royalties anymore.
