Previously on "The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl": Squirrel Girl is trapped in the past, and friend Nancy has gone back to rescue her! But Nancy didn't have a time machine, so she hitched a ride with Doctor Doom! So now it's Squirrel Girl versus Doctor Doom in the 1960s, fighting for the fate of the very planet! What could possibly go wrong, right? Well anyway, in this issue EVERYTHING GOES WRONG FOREVER.
Amazing, as always, though the Doom story is growing long in the tooth. As much as Doom is an excellent villain, there is only so much of Squirrel Girl's version of Doom I can take. It's not a bad thing, it's just almost time for a new arc.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, aka Doreen Green, is a woman with the proportional speed and strength of a squirrel. In addition to her abilities to climb and jump, she's extra nimble and she can talk to squirrels. She uses these awesome abilities to fight crime with her squirrel sidekick, Tippy-Toe, and her roommate, Nancy.
A quirky superhero. Cartoonish and silly.
This series was rebooted. This is the rebooted #4 comic. Squirrel Girl and Doctor Doom battle in the 1960s.
I love this comic. As much as I love Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman and the whole "mature audiences" and themes movement in the comic industry, I love this comic. It is the only one I try not to miss.
It reminds me of the way comics were when in was a kid (late seventies / early eighties): full if wonder. Doreen Green is a caring, intelligent hero who is confident in herself (she can't help but point out she's "unbeatable"!).
I love North's well researched yet light touch storylines: he is clearly well versed in the comic cannon, yet always throws in a slight curveball as to how Doreen solves her problems (usually with help from her friends-- human AND squirrel).
I also love Henderson's artwork. I love the fact that this female protagonist is not doing some weird pose with her butt out and that she isn't sexualized. I think Henderson has done a great job of making Doreen squirrelish looking and girlish looking.
