For the first time in its history, Tevenar is at war. The Matriarch of Ramunna, furious with the wizards she believes betrayed her, has sent the Armada to conquer and destroy. Armed with a secret weapon that makes them the unchallenged terror of the seas, the ships of the Armada descend on vulnerable Tevenar.Elkan and Josiah, along with the rest of the Wizard’s Guild, scramble to rally the people of Tevenar to defend their home. The Mother’s power gives them a chance to stand against their foes, but alone it’s not enough. To defeat the Ramunnans, they must find a way to duplicate their enemies’ weapons. Josiah believes they can, because they’ve encountered a similar explosive before. But only one person in Tevenar knows how to make and use the deadly blasting powder—Meira, the woman Elkan once loved and rejected.
Great characters, always changing story, sadness, happiness and everything in between. I did not want it to end. Parts made me laugh out loud, some made me almost yell in anger and other parts made me cry, even though I tried really hard not to. This was a great read. Thank you, Angela Holder.
Fun series. The battle preparations started to get a little boring, but the battle for Tevenar wasn't bad, and a lot still happened afterward. The characters are definitely the strong point in the series. I got teary eyed several times. My major criticism (besides the need for better editing) is that sometimes conflict resolution occurs more quickly than seems realistic.
This book is wonderfully crafted and very well written. It's an amazing epic fantasy of loss and war, magic and love, betrayals and forgiveness. I loved every bit of this story. Every character, every win and loss so wonderfully written and told. This book brings everything to life, and eventually every thing works out the way it needs to.
This series is very inventive oh, but what I like best is the way the characters are developed to the point that you feel like you really know them. The story is well done, with twists and excitement to keep your interest
Loved the way the characters were developed and as a reader I came to care about their lives (including the animals / familiars). The four books were exciting with ups and downs and well developed plots. Very enjoyable
Solid conclusion to the trilogy. The plot was interesting, and the people seemed real. Nice hopeful ending, but not without a few bumps and sacrifices.
Anyone who follows my reviews knows I have no mercy for books with characters who have sex outside wedlock. This book did that. After the first three books were clean (with one or two brief mentions of innuendo in the entire book), I expected this fourth book to be the same. I was wrong. 1, the characters mentioned sex every other chapter. They talked about it with their familiars, discussed making themselves temporarily infertile, etc. 2, boy sleeps with woman. He hears his crush is returning to the land and thinks, "Great, one more night with this woman, and then I can be free for her." What? Yeah, he's not enamored with the woman he's sleeping with every night. 3, there are prostitutes. It's legal. They are part of the "Partners Guild" and use their talents (on men or women) for counseling and stealing secrets.
Otherwise? The book probably would have made 5 stars if those three things were removed. I couldn't bring myself to finish the book (it is almost 900 pages). The plot threads were woven together expertly. AH juggled the different religions, cultures, languages, characters (10 povs in 12 chapters), and motivations from multiple groups (monarchy, guilds, cities, continents). The rising and falling of each conflict was timed beautifully. She really is a master of blending these and piling events on top of each other (prisoner escapes just as Josiah returns, and this is just as they discover how to fix the canons, etc.). Other moral dilemmas had just the right tension and inner turmoil (should Josiah lie to Sar?). Explosions! Who doesn't like explosions?
I really looked forward to reading it and seeing how everything was wrapped up at the end. It's too bad this happens with books sometimes.
I enjoyed the entire series, although not all of this last book's ending.
The author came up with a fairly unique magic system and some very interesting characters. The writing was somewhat superficial, but the series makes an enjoyable read.
A satisfying ending to a very engaging series. Very thought provoking and intriguing. I am very glad that it ended like it has. I have gotten increasingly tired of cliffhangers. Many of my favorite authors seem to be incapable of ending a book anymore. They leave you on textbooks waiting on the next episode. Sadist,s all of them.
