SUMMARY
Bale's dragon stirs near Esme. He soothes her during nightmares. He's destroyed the mushroom ring, and he promises to keep her safe. Rave comes in, doesn't believe Bale’s dragon would choose her, thinks Bale has a soft spot for hard luck cases. Bale insists Esme is his solarys. Rave says Esme has never been strong, according to Piper, and if Bale tries to claim her as his mate, they'll both die. Rave carries her away.
Esme accuses Rave of thinking she's still a danger to the dragon clan. Her rooms are lush but lonely. “Mirror, mirror, who is the faintest of them all?” She sees herself as a ghost, that no one would miss her if she floated away. "There wasn’t anything to her that hadn’t been given to her by someone else, not money, not connections." She eats a meal with the girls, decides she wants to lose her virginity. She heads to the casino.
Torch comes to Bale to get her out of the casino before she finds the wrong company. He thinks Rave is a mother hen, that there are fates worse than death. Bale says he's deformed. Torch says let Esme look and choose.
“I’ll give you a prize if you come back to the cavern now. A gift more precious than any token in that machine.” She remembers him, then remembers he's the king. Then she sees flames in his eyes and remembers he's the beast, too. She asks why he came down. “I’ve been watching over you for a few days now. And so, I feel…” When he paused, she offered, “Sorry for me?” “Possessive.” “I don’t want to be possessed by anyone. I’ve had enough of that.” “Good. So let me escort you back to your suite.” He held out the crook of his right elbow, his left arm still hidden under the cape. “And make no mistake, Esme. You *are* a prize.”
EVALUATION
With hints of Snow White (grandmother who sees her as an asset only; Esme seemingly dead on an altar with a moat) and Beauty and the Beast (Bale hides his stone wing from all eyes), this story finishes the trilogy. Each girl thought they weren't enough, each guy thought he didn't have enough to offer. I like Bale. His distress is, for me, understandable. Esme's self-esteem and self-harm issues aren't addressed.
I'm disappointed we didn't get more magic, more voodoo, more explanation of the rings. Also, Lars is a stock villain.

Just one taste of her… He angled his head. And the door behind him dinged, startling her to glance away. He officially hated elevators.
