I read "Mind-Shaft: Paranormal Anthology" which I believe is the same book as described above. Once again, Ms. Burke has excelled as a writer. Each of the six stories is unique, intriguing, and left me wanting more. As I read each one I would say to myself, "That is my favorite." By the time I finished the book, I loved each story and came away without having any favorite. This is fast read and one I could not put down.
This collection of short stories is perfect for eliciting goose bumps and chills. Meet a pair of sisters who are not what they seem, a businessman whose past dealings catch up with him, and a woman who suffers night terrors, among other sinister tales. The title story, Mind Shaft, uncoils like a snake, striking with the perfect ending bite. I enjoyed each story in this collection, but a special “thumbs up” goes to Spin. I have a fondness for creepy stories that feature fairgrounds. Especially one where “the colors are all blurred together, like a painting that got wet as it was starting to dry.” Well done! 4.5 stars.
This collection of six short stories focuses on the dark side of speculative fiction from paranormal romance and revenge to good old horror. Each of the stories is unique with a well-developed plot and engaging characters. My favorite was A Place So Cold which had me on the edge of my seat even though I could predict the ending. Other stories were less predictable with fun twists. Definitely bloody, evil, and entertaining. There are a few formatting particularities in kindle, but they don’t impact the reading so I’m going with 5 stars.
Suzanne Burke’s collection of tales within “Mind-Shaft: Paranormal Anthology” takes readers on a whirlwind adventure through the course of short stories centered on the odd, the supernatural, and the maddeningly bizarre that will send chills down your spine and make you think twice about every sound you hear in the darkest of night.
Within the first couple of pages, readers will instantly realize that Burke not only wants you to explore the darker sides of the paranormal world but wants you to take a deeper look at what really scares people and what supernatural forces are at work behind the scenes of our own reality. Unforgiving and unapologetic in her approach, Burke rips down the curtain on casual haunts and commonplace spooky sounds of the night by displaying a more sinister approach to our normal versions of ghosts and ghouls by shining a dirty flashlight at our own foible emotions, a talent she masterfully details within each chapter.
Each section of her collection centers on a specific story offered up for inspection and each one comes with its own level of paranormal involvement. Be it touchingly bizarre, gruesomely bloody, or mentally unstable, Burke takes us on a ride through the darker side of choices, regrets, and really really bad decisions exposed in crafted handiwork that showcases her talent as an author. Each chapter, another journey, each foray into the world of paranormal, another chance to see how people’s lives can change in an instant when the icy finger of the supernatural world decides to tap you on the shoulder. The sections are short works of fiction, but each story holds its own and is reminiscent of Twilight Zone episodes of our past that, in some way, mated with a couple of airings from Tales from the Crypt. I can only assume that was Burke’s inspiration because as I read through her work I imagined each chapter and how well they would have been as episodes on television as her ability to bring you into her world leaves you wanting more in every way possible.
If you are a fan of paranormal, you would do well to dive headfirst into Burke’s, Mind-Shaft: Paranormal Anthology. The stories are short but powerful in their approach with each offering up a different take on the world of supernatural beyond our own. A touch of mystery, a splash of thrills, a handful of crazy, a kiss that is echoed through time, and a gallon of blood become effortlessly blended together into a collection that will gross you out one minute before making you smile the next. It will leave you haunted well after you finish, something tells me Burke wouldn’t have it any other way. Great read!
These stories were beautifully told and very interesting and entertaining.
Emma in Sisterly Love was the heartless bloodthirsty little sister who hid her atrocities until her big sister Pippa found out about her.
Leighton Caulfield in Halloween Homecoming, heartless with his lawyer Kelsey Monroe made themselves rich on the blood of families they destroyed. But the time of reckoning came.
Helen in A Place so Cold had a gift, and the gift helped the police solve cold cases.
In Spin, no one knew what happened to Holly Daniels and Dr. Christopher in the doctor’s room. One minute they were there, the next minute they were not.
Christopher Manning the great Hollywood Filmmaker in The Director’s Cut discovered himself and made an Oscar-winning movie. His life was complicated, but it has a sweet ending.
Lastly, the Mind Shaft was a beautiful and powerful ending to the whole collection. Mrs. Denton, and later Mrs. Carmichael lived a life of fear. Indeed, the evil that men do, lives after them! I encountered editing errors throughout the read which I believe the author should address.
What a thrilling collection of paranormal short stories. I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. "Sisterly Love" left me with an eerie realization of just how deep family bonds can run, even if it involves murder. Or do they? "Halloween Homecoming" was a satisfying, although gruesome tale of revenge and justice. I think of all, my favorite may have been "A Place So Cold," just because of the happy ending and my affinity to psychics. "Spin" was the ultimate mind-altering story. "The Director's Cut" took me in a whole different direction and I fell in love with Christopher Manning, Iolanda, and his Castle. This collection of stories concludes with "Mind-Shaft" which took me deep inside the psyche of a woman tortured by demons of her own making. If you love chilling stories that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and your breath catch in your throat, you will absolutely love "Mind-Shaft" by S. Burke. It is well-written, descriptive and a great example of how Indie authors should weave a story.
The cover of my version of this book is different from this cover, but I believe it's the same book. This book is a collection of short stories, which I am not really a fan of. I took a chance on it because I've heard great things about this author. I wasn't disappointed.
My favorite stories were the last two because they were longer. Each story has unique characters who have their own version of horror to share. It's not the blood splattering horror but more like the fear-gripping, mind-haunting kind of stuff. Luckily for me, I love mind game stories. I don't want to give away any of the stories because that would ruin the fun of reading them. Suffice it to say, if you enjoy reading short stories and you enjoy haunting stories or stories with a little bit of paranormal flair, then you should read this book. :-)
This is quite an eclectic collection of stories. They are not gory or horrific. They do have some mind bend twists that are expect in a couple of them. I believe my favorite is the last story, I have a fondest for ghost stories, even or especially if the ghost is vengeful.
I love to find a great book of short stories where I can read a story in one sitting. In “Mind-Shaft”, no story stood out as being the best—because they were all good! Each one has its own unique flavor with interesting twists. Ghosts, revenge, murder, justice, suspense, and excitement saturate the stories. If you enjoy short stories with a paranormal flavor you won’t want to miss this gem!
