Detective Wade Jackson is in for a shock when he’s summoned to the police chief’s office—his sergeant has been poisoned, and Jackson’s been tapped to lead the investigation.

But before the Eugene Violent Crimes unit has a chance to respond, two people are gunned down at a licensed marijuana nursery. Jackson and his colleague Detective Lara Evans are on the case—but there are more suspects than evidence, and the crime is baffling.

Soon, more people are hospitalized, and when Evans discovers a link between the poisonings and edible pot, she and Jackson suspect that the product tampering and shootings are connected.

As the task force investigates new leads, it’s clear that the detectives are on a dangerous trail, one that forces them to question everyone—even their own team. But they’ll have to uncover the truth fast…before the next victim falls prey.

Detective Wade Jackson has his hands full! His sergeant has been poisoned and Jackson needs to take her place. He's in the midst of raising his young son alone, even though his girlfriend helps when she can. She is also raising her grandson. They are also looking for a house that can accommodate all of them. He's still fighting his attraction to fellow Detective Lara Evans.

Two people are shot at a marijuana nursery .. one of them an undercover agent. When it's discovered that the sergeant ate a marijuana brownie that was poisoned, they start looking for a connection. Then a young boy got into his father's 'cookies' and ate a poisoned brownie.

Evans discovers a link between the edible pot and the poisoning and now they believe that the shooting was also connected.

Are these incidences because of the competition among the pot shops? Or is there something darker, deeper than what they think? And is the shooter someone closer than they think?

I have read several of the Wade Jackson series and have enjoyed them all. This book is well-written with a large cast of suspects. It's almost non-stop action. The main characters (returning from previous books) are aptly described and at times they seem bigger than life.
I highly recommend this series .... starting from the first book.

Many thanks to the author / Thomas & Mercer/Netgalley. The opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

The second I spotted Death Deserved on Netgalley, I knew I had to read it, it had been far too long since I last read a Detective Jackson book, so clearly needed my latest fix. Well I definitely wasn't disappointed, I thankfully remembered the characters with relative ease and had a whole new set of crimes to learn about.

As a side note I do believe this can be read as a standalone, all relevant background information is touched upon, even though having read the full series up to this point, it did remind me of many other great stories in the series.

The main premise behind this story, was to do with the legalisation of Marijuana in Oregon, and as a result there are people being shot dead at a pot farm, and then we discover there are some poisonings that may also be related too drugs.

However due to the nature of the crimes, there is almost an over abundance of potential suspects, and its up to Detective Wade Jackson and his team to work out who may be convicted for what, and also if any of them are actually innocent.

There are leads from all manner of sources and the action is high paced throughout as, the police try to get these latest threats off the streets and hopefully save more lives in the process.

In addition to the focus on Wade, his colleague Detective Lara Evans is also getting some of her own chapters, and I was excited to see all her SWAT team training finally paying off as she responds to her first call out. The other main character was Sophie Speranza the journalist at the local paper who has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time for a story.

I am a huge fan of this series and thoroughly enjoyed reading every second of this latest offering. I'm not convinced its my favourite book of the series, but it definitely comes very close and already I am needing another fix from my favourite Violent Crimes Unit.

Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

Diving into a Detective Wade Jackson book is like visiting with an old friend or relative that you wish you could see more often. It's a 5-star moment from page 1. Full disclosure, I have read all ten of the previous novels in the Detective Wade Jackson series, by L J Sellers. It only took one, the first one, to put her on my must read list.

The core group of police characters - Wade Jackson, detective, Violent Crimes, and his cohorts Rob "Schak" Schakowski, Michael Quince, Denise Lammers, and Lara Evans - each bring their own skill and personality traits to a cohesive team that just plain old gets the job done. None of them is perfect, but all of them have a personal code that garners respect. They all have events that they would like buried. That just makes them human. All of them have had to overcome personal issues and go on with their lives and their jobs.

Then there is Wade Jackson, father and family man. Even here, there is no plastic character living the perfect life. He does the best he can in the circumstances that arise. He doesn't always come up smelling like a rose, but he always reeks of integrity.

The mysteries in this series are always quite fulfilling. You won't know till the end whodunnit and why. No, I won't tell you the story. I will tell you that more than one murder occurs. And, I will tell you that it takes a look at possible ramifications of legalizing pot. I hope that tantalizes you enough to buy not only this book, but all the books in the series that came before.

On a personal level, my truly favorite thing about this series is that the backstory keeps me coming back for more. Yes, I care about what happens to Jackson's daughter Katie. Yes, I care about Jackson's relationship with Kera. Yes, I care about the lives and loves of his team. I care because they feel like real people. They are the kind of people you invite over for a Sunday picnic. I find this to be L J Sellers special talent; she makes you care.

If you haven't read the previous books, this will stand alone as a mystery, but you will miss out on understanding some references to things that came before.

I will certainly keep my eyes open for the next installment of the Detective Wade Jackson mysteries.

I obtained this book from NetGalley in exchange for a review.

I won a copy on Goodreads Firstreads.

Detective Wade Jackson is having a busy week. The police are short handed with detectives especially since he is covering for another police sergeant that was poisoned. Two people were found dead in one of the newly legal pot growing businesses. As more murders happen, they are left to wonder if the murders are all connected or if they can even manage to solve them all.

I haven't read any of the other books in this series so I have missed some of the backstories of the characters but I didn't feel lost because of that. The story was fairly intriguing but was a little too neatly tied up to be truly believable. I would rate the story as 3.5 stars.

Jackson's sergeant has been poisoned, so he has to lead the investigation plus temporarily take over the unit. That adds to his private problems of raising his son alone, depending on his girlfriend's help and looking for a house to move in together. All while fighting his attraction to a fellow detective.
Meanwhile the team investigates at a licensed marijuana plantation, where two people were gunned down and have to face more suspects than evidence.
When more people are hospitalized with poisoning, the detectives make the connection to edible pot. And things get ugly when a little boy gets his hands on his father's cookies because the community doesn't trust their police force anymore after recent scandals. And the legalization of marijuana seems to not have helped.

Again a good thriller, fast-paced and full of action. It's well written and the large cast of suspects on top of the pretty large cast of main and reappearing characters we already know doesn't overwhelm.
The mystery unfolds, becomes more and more intriguing with every little hint or twist. And builds to an unpredictable, final conclusion.

The backstory stands out and keeps me coming back. Sellers just makes me care about the characters and cases.
The characters are mostly likeable but all real and believable, with their own skills, faults and personal traits.

Especially Jackson is so complex. I liked him, since he was introduced in the first book of the series. He's not at all perfect but such a good one and always trying to do right by everyone.
But I don't know what to think of him not being able to put something else than his job first. I feel sorry for little Benjie. And there's this little thing that irritates me and comes back all the time. I've had enough now, of his attraction to Laura Evans. They both know their attraction is mutual, but they want different things from life, he's struggling, doesn't know why, when he's so in love with Kera - it's repetitive.
Also I've read enough decriptions of Evans physical appearance. But I like the addition of her SWAT training and their duties.
And also to learn more about Sophie, the journalist who always seems to be in the right place at the right time, Seargent Lammers, who becomes more and more human and Shack, my favourite.

But I love Kera. That woman's too good for her own good. she's so understanding of all the shit she has to put up with, Jackson constantly chosing work over his family.

I would love for Jackson to get his priorities straight, to take the mostly-at-the-desk job for his family's sake. He'd still be there and involved but also able to delegate to the other detectives, we all know now. And watching them investigate, would also offer a different take on the books.

I'm not exactly unbiased on the topic of L.J. Sellers' Detective Wade Jackson series. I've read and loved all eleven books and reviewed several glowingly on this blog (for example, Crimes of Memory and Rules of Crime). Let me see if I can explain why I'm such a fan by reviewing Sellers' latest, Death Deserved (Thomas & Mercer 2016).

In this story, Detective Jackson must juggle the murder of a worker at a marijuana store with the possible poisoning of his boss and a what he fears is a recurrence of a personal health problem. The story is well-conceived, topical in its insights into the growing and selling of legal marijuana, with tightly-woven plots and subplots that build throughout the story, never distracting from each other, until we reach a final unpredictable conclusion. Sellers' signature insight into police procedures is precise and fascinating as usual--probably a big reason why many are drawn to her novels:

"Lieutenant Miller would handle them from the command center, after sending in a cell phone duct-taped to a remote-controlled hailer. Best-case scenario, the suspect would accept the cell phone and engage in conversation, letting his frustrations and demands be known. ... Worst-case scenario, he would refuse to negotiate and continue to threaten himself or others."

Character descriptions are always good, with believable actions and reactions, and contribute to the visuals of the story:

"Sergeant Bruckner--a wall of muscle with a shaved head and a big voice..."

Twelve words and we know a lot about what Bruckner looks and how he acts. In this next snippet, Sellers describes a female SWAT agent as she heads out on her first call:

"Not only was this the day she might shoot someone, it was also the day she might die on the job. She'd faced plenty of those as a patrol officer, but none had been expected. She'd never purposely put herself in harm's way before--not counting the time she'd boarded a moving airplane piloted by a killer."

But the star--Detective Jackson--is memorable for all of his complexity. He's tough but kind, firm but understanding, the overworked crime fighter who knows when to take time for the people who depend upon him, a man who seems transparent but may be hiding secrets. It's not hard to see why Detective Jackson is considered one of the outstanding fictional detectives in literature today (not to be compared to retired detectives like Sherlock Holmes or Inspector Clouseau).

The story is set in Eugene Oregon with all the authenticity that a native (which Sellers is) brings to the descriptions and the story's sense of place. It's rich, detailed, with the touches that make natives love their city. No wonder L.J. Sellers is a four-time Readers’ Favorite Award winner and one of the highest-rated crime fiction authors on Amazon.

Usual series rules apply here. As with all series, it is better to read from book 1 and in order but as with all the books in this series, the main story is completely self contained so it could be read as a stand-alone however, you would miss out on a bunch of character development, backstory and series arcs if you did this.
With Jackson in charge due to the poisoning of his boss, he is called to the shooting of two people at a legal marijuana farm. Is the setting something to do with the crime or is it coincidence? Evidence points to the former when the crop is mysteriously destroyed. Then Evans, who is investigating her boss's suspected poisoning, discovers more people hospitalised. She digs and discovers another link to legalised pot. Together Evans and Jackson pool their evidence to get to the bottom of all these shenanigans before more people get hurt/killed.
I've been with this series since I first got my Kindle way back in 2011 and have read and enjoyed every book subsequently released. In fact, I can include Ms Sellers other series (Agent Dallas) and her stand alones here too. I really love her attention to detail, meticulous research and writing style so, it was a no brainer that I would read and enjoy this one too. Where some series become stale after this long (we are on to book 11 here) this one just keeps getting better. There is always something fresh added to the mix and this book is no exception.
Characterisation is, as always, spot on. I especially loved the development of Evans in this book. I love her as a character anyway and this book introduces another side of her. I also love the interaction and banter between her and Jackson as well as the "tension" between them! That said, the balance between private life and crime solving is again perfect. I have noticed a tendency to focus too much on backstory and characters' lives in certain other series. I agree that you do need a certain amount if you are going to invest in the characters of a series but there is always that danger of the line being crossed and I am pleased to report that this does not happen with Ms Sellers' books.
The story zips along at a fair pace, Ms Sellers is never one to waste words and the writing here is as tight as her previous books. The balance between description and narrative is perfect for me as I do like a book to get on with itself.
All in all, a great addition to one of my favourite series. Hanging out til the next one!

I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Another excellent addition to the Detective Jackson series. Good to see characters from other books appearing.

The relationship between Jackson and Evans continues to cause slight problems in the way they function and it was good to see Evans considering other relationships. I got a bit confused with Sophie and her lover but I am sure all will become clear book by book.

The story centered around the legalisation of pot and the problems this was bringing as people fight for a place in the market and also causing problems for Jackson and his team. I was sad to read about Lammers but I am sure LJ will have something up her sleeve.

A very good read and another 5 star review for one of my favourite authors eagerly awaiting the next book.

Another good one

L.j. Sellers never lets the reader down.
Death Deserved, another of her Det. Jackson mystery novels wraps the reader up into two complicated killings. One involves the shooting of a pot farmer, legal in the state of Oregon where Seller's novels are located, and the other the police shooting of a vet suffering PTSD who was reported to have taken a child hostage and barricaded himself in his house.
Are the killings connected? Or even related somehow?
While the investigations run, two people come down with poisoning form eating maryjane brownies. What is going on in Eugene, Oregon?
Death Deserved is an entertaining crime novel and will please all MS Sellers fans and new readers alike.

Death Deserved published by Thomas and Mercer author L J Sellers
Promises made in youth were they taken seriously ? Legal marijuana being grown in Eugene, Oregon. The neighbors couldn't ignore the strong smells as the wind blew was that a reason ? Then we have a prosecutor who had a distorted sense of power. Detective Wade, his sergeant has been poisoned while at home. What is going on ? He had more suspects then evidence.
Good story giving you detailed information of what is happening . Intriguing, interesting, all would enjoy. This was a first to read a book by Sellers, but won't be the last. Given book by Net Galley for my honest opinion of which I have given.

Death Deserved by L.J. Sellers . I read Deadly Bonds in 2014 and liked the main character, Detective Wade Jackson.

Jackson's sergeant is hospitalized and in intensive care after being poisoned; two people are shot at a licensed marijuana nursery; Jackson worries about his own health; and plenty of personal complications among the members of the Violent Crimes Unit keep the plot rolling.

I did not like this one as much as Deadly Bonds, but I this is another series that I wouldn't mind catching up on.

Bit same old same old

I had trouble finishing this book , it took longer for me to read than normal .
If a SWAT officer , especially a rookie kills on her first outing there would be ructions , but instead she's out on the street to kill someone else .
Also I cannot understand the bee stinging incident . Two officers get stung by numerous bees, which leave their sting in the skin , but go back and get a bit of something dabbled on and hey presto they are fine.
I think it will be a while before I read another L.J. Sellers.

3.5 Stars. It was nice to spend some more time with Detective Wade Jackson. This was a fairly complex story with a few interweaved links that only became clear towards the end and quite a shock when you found out who was behind the murders and why. Quite a lot happened towards the end of the book, and a few fundamental changes for Wade too. I do recommend this interesting Detective series set in Eugene, U.S., however this one was not my favourite one.

Not bad

Was not a bad read, it was about legalised marijuana and obvious someone is not happy about it and for the same reason one of their family members overdosed. I did listen to most of it and the narrator I thought was not the best. Worth a read as everybody has a different prospect on it.

Death Deserved: A Detective Jackson Mystery, Book 11 by L.J. Sellers

286 Pages
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer
Release Date: July 19, 2016

Fiction, General Fiction (Adult), Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Police Procedural

The book is set in Eugene, Oregon. Detective Wade Jackson is placed in charge of the Violent Crimes unit when his Sergeant is hospitalized for poison. No sooner than he received his temporary position, a call is routed to him of a multiple shooting. When the officers arrive, they find a woman shot but alive and a dead man in a marijuana nursery. They begin canvasing the area and find a possible suspect. Upon notifying the next of kin, they find more suspects. Now they have more suspects than officers. The poisoning of the Sergeant does not seem to be an accident when another victim turns up at the hospital with the same symptoms. The team is literally racing the clock to find out what is happening and stop it before any of the victims die.

The book is fast paced, well developed characters, and is written in the third person point of view. I have been reading books by this author for years and am never disappointed. This book is no exception. I read it in one sitting. If you like police procedurals with a real cast of characters, you will enjoy this book.

#11 in the series. About the same cast of characters, carry forward of their personal and professional issues, always with some flaw and usually some family calamity.

Good police procedural, a bit more of a social issue stressed, and I thought I had it figured out, but I almost never do.

If you like whodunits this is a good series.

Yes, I cut and pasted from #10....

Another Good Read

Writing a string of books about the same people in the same town doing the same things is a project hard to keep fresh enough to retain those readers who devour most or all of them engaged. The risk of far fetched plots and boring routines is high. But this author rises above that with sub dramas and characters which appeal because you know them well.

As a native of Eugene, OR I adore the detective Jackson novels. This one was particularly fun as I examined the assumptions many in enforcement and more straight edge groups make about marijuana users and growers. Super fun as usual and I love continuing to get to know the secondary characters more.

I just discovered LJSellers first book, The Sex Club a few years ago and enjoyed it. I meant to read the others in the series, but somehow got sidetracked and here is book #11 about to be published. The good news is that you can jump right in without feeling at a loss for not having read other books in the series.

The book has an interesting premise, dealing with the pot growing industry in Oregon, where it is legal. But legal doesn't mean without problems, including competition and anti-legalization groups. And the laws are still murky and not fully developed. The book moves at a fast pace, with suspects coming fast and furious. I like that the book alternates between several main characters - Jackson, Evans and Speranza, a reporter. Each is developed nicely with backstories you want to learn more about.

Sellers does a great job of making the plot feel realistic. The best news of this book is knowing I have the 9 books between 1 and 11 still to read.
I was provided this book by netgalley and Thomas & Mercer in exchange for an honest review.
