Patrick Holt is lonely. A bad breakup with his boyfriend has left the forty-year-old ophthalmologist reluctant to get involved with another man. When his neighbor sets him up with her brother-in-law Eric, Patrick prepares himself for disappointment. Kim Davis is a writer, an editor, and an occasional adjunct English instructor. Her first novel, Clean Hands, was published in 2012 and her last two novels, Collusion and Daddy Issues, were published by JMS Books. DNF @ 1%.

This book has baggage in the form of redundancies.

[…] ever since I moved to Evanston last year. I inherited the three-bedroom, two-bathroom Victorian next to the Keeners from my aunt Corrine, my father’s oldest sister.

Three sentences later, in the same paragraph even:

Her house, a lovely little Victorian in Evanston […]

Okay, I think we’ve established it’s a Victorian in Evanston.

And then the next part goes on about prior to the move to Evanston, and then they moved, and then after they moved, his ex moved.

When I started reading I wondered why there was a 1.5 rating for this story, as it pulled me in rather quickly and I liked it a lot. Yes, there were the hints in the blurb and thrown in to the story about the troubled past of Eric, but for about the first third of the story I really liked it. Then there were some things that got me to change my impression of Patrick, he came across as a bit of an AH, sorry, but that's my opinion. And the hints of the troubled past proceeded to be thrown in for the longest part, until finally it was all revealed.

Sadly, at that point I couldn't believe the big love between both MCs anymore. There was just no chemistry at all.

At least the writing got me to finish the book and the epilogue was halfway decent and satisfying.
Therefore 2 stars.
