For many young mages like Basen, the Academy is more than just a place to learn the art of manipulating energy. It has become the only sanctuary in this unbalanced war, a symbol of resistance. But the Academy can’t stand up to Tauwin’s army much longer. As Basen and a group of allies take on the task of recruiting troops from other territories, he soon comes to find that no one is stupid enough to fight…no one except a fearsome horde of creatures more powerful and violent than they are smart. Basen begins leading them back to the Academy only to realize there’s a good reason humans have kept away from these creatures for centuries.
On the other hand, Tauwin has problems of his own. His benefactor in this war arrives in Kyrro to claim what he was promised in exchange for his support: half of the territory. Sanya quickly assumes this benefactor to be the opportunity she needs to fix everything that has gone wrong in her life, planning to gain his trust and turn him against Tauwin by informing him of Tauwin’s lies. But soon she’ll discover that this masked man, who’s come to Kyrro with his own army, is even more dangerous than he appears.
I can't see any reason not to give this book an excellent rating, in fact, B. T. Narrow writes a very interesting story about mages and warriors, with elves and other magical creatures thrown in for good measure. Although you could say that Basen is the lead character and strong mage who can make portals, a skill no other mage has developed, except for the warped Sanya, who because of her abuse by an overly-ambitious father, had to develop her skills in private, and whose one desire or feeling of love is for her murdered mother, whom she wants to bring back know from the land of the spirit, Narro has the skill of fully developing several characters as he weaves his tale of adventure, magic, betrayal, and war. Though not deeply bringing up emotions of these characters as certain literary giants, whose names I can't remember now, he weaves a interesting story that is difficult to put down. Perhaps the only criticism I can think of is that each book I've read just seems to come to a stop, dead in its tracks, but in the next book in the series, just picks up where it left off. It just means that the novel can't be as easily read as a stand-alone novel, and if it doesn't confuse the reader too much, he may find he will have to go back to the first story to pick up all the details that were missing, in fact to really get all the details, one may have to go back to his first series, Bastial Energy, which I have decided to do, since after reading one book of a later series, and almost not continuing with any of his books, which my husband convinced me to do, so we can read them together. In other words if you like reading books of mages, warriors, academies, war, and light romance, I highly recommend these series as original, entertaining, and fun.
The author has created a sophisticated world and is consistent throughout the series. BT reminds me a little of Piers Anthony. I look forward to anything he tries his hand at. I read the last trilogy in the series first then went back and started from the beginning. It is a treat to read a great book and then find out that the author has a body of work to experience. Enjoy!!
I am hooked on this series and all the realistic characters who have become part of my world!!! I can't wait to read the next book!!! I'm constantly surprised by the twists and turns!!!☺ Once I have finished this series, I will have to check out all his other writings!!!!!😀
Nothing really stood out in this book for me, there were a lot of nice twists added in but overall I felt like the story was a filler, processing from A to B. I started reading the next chapter immediately as I was already hooked in the storyline.
the friends, joined together to protect their school, are suddenly sent on missions that split them apart. looking for elves and allies, the young people find more than they bargained for. war may destroy all their dreams
Read this many years ago. Started it again because I forgot I had read it. Then, I remembered. It was an ok read. About book 3 or 4 I started to have problems with the portals.

The is fast-paced and well written. The characters are developed further and the coming into thier strengths, learning to use them, is the best part of the book. I love the all characters, but Basen is getting better as the story goes along, as is Clev, and the others as well. The overall tension in the story is one of the best parts, how the author has woven them together is phenomenal. This series has kept me on the edge all the way through, making want that book 4. By the way where is it? There are some really amazing ideas in the book, some of which are carried over from other books in this series. I just reread this book and currently I am rereading the whole series, I loved it that much. I definitely recommend this series. If you're looking for tension, action, magic, and some romance, check out this series. I don't think you'll regret it! Great Reading Everyone.
Shadows of Kings (The Kin of Kings Book 3) by B.T. Narro
This was a great book full of magic, war. friendship, and treachery. I loved every minute of it. All of the strange races and cultures were really fun to read about.
I thought this book was the conclusion of the series. No! Silly me. It's merely the last episode to have been released. Once again, everything just STOPS. No plotlines are resolved.
I doubt I'll be reading future installments, because I don't read a single book on the installment plan.
I really enjoy the universe that Narro has created. I always immediately want to go on to the next book. Universes like this with different aspects from different people at different times in different series is just one of my favourite things. World building is awesome.
Still enjoying this series a lot, but there is a plot line in this one that makes no sense to me. I wish I could explain myself without spoilers, but I can't. Still looking forward to starting the next book.
