Welcome to Possum Hollow, where life is hard, short, and soaked in sin.
Merle Davis is well and truly fucked. Forced to marry the meanest, most spiteful woman in the holler in order to keep his wayward sister from taking a permanent swim in Hogtie Pond, he resigns himself to a lifetime of suffering.
His new bride, Amaleen Crouse, has the biggest moonshine empire around and, as he comes to learn the hard way, the prettiest daughter. But he can’t afford to be distracted by red hair and a spitfire mouth. Not when lives depend on the blasphemous vows he took.
But when the powers that be force him to taste that forbidden fruit, his resolve goes straight to hell in a Mason jar, and he soon has to choose between the woman he loves and the woman who owns him. And either choice will likely end in blood and misery.
Because there ain’t no law in the holler. There’s only living and dying.
This novella is a work of erotica. If you're offended by graphic sex, strong language, abuse, or have triggers, it may not be the book for you. This is the first novella in a planned series. It is NOT a full-length book.
Moxie Darling is an erotic romance author living in the wilds of Ohio with her husband and four-legged family. She has a penchant for writing (and reading) naughty stories with a taboo twist. When she’s not making word magic, she can be found crocheting stuff, stalking Goodreads and Pinterest, or struggling to resist the siren call of her chocolate stash.
When I started this book I expected a naughty taboo story much like Clover by this author.
Whats that saying ....
... yeah. Despite this not being the book I expected I can't sit here and rant shit because I was wrong.
This was raw, gritty and at times uncomfortable to read BUT it was also extremely well done. It's a testament to this author that she can go from erotica to something like this - with some real substance.
I may have felt slightly ill at points during this but it still had me whipping through the pages like a mad woman. Half the time I had no idea where this was heading and how it would be wrapped up but isn't that what you want when you pick up a book. I don't want to be left feeling ambivalent and honestly that's the last thing I'm feeling after this.
Now I can't wait to see what other twisted Possum Hollow shit happens next
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
Moxie has done it again. This book is a little darker and tugs more at the heart strings than her other three did, not in a bad way though.
Merle is a hard man, nothing in life handed to him for free or even with help. He has a younger sister who gets into so much trouble Merle will never be out from under her debt. This time the dirty little ain't nobody gets out alive town mayor, Elmer, arranges the marriage of the one woman in town that NOBODY likes or wants. She is local and only shine maker in town so people turn a blind eye to her goings on, and she has so much on everyone that noone is free from her either. She is in a kind word - gross. Again being kind,
Merle can't even begin to want this however he wants his sister free from debt, knowing she will only get into more and he will end up fixing that too....but he can't win for losing.
Cherry, who happens to be the daughter of this hag that Merle is married to, is a good person. He recognizes it right away, and maybe that is partially what draws him to her. He is truly a happier person when he is around her, and can't stay away from her. He knows it is wrong, he knows it is going to end badly for the both of them when they get caught, but he can't stay away from her. He falls deeply for her, and she does for him. He is free when he is with Cherry.
Guess what happens, yep they get caught, by the gross hag, who now threatens to turn Cherry into a town whore and keeps Merle at her beck and call....but Merle found something out about the hag and uses it to free himself and Cherry from her clutches. It isn't a complete out for the both of them but it is the beginning....their beginning and they will take it. I can't help but feel there is more to their story though.....
I would love to gush more about this book, but then I would be telling you everything, and that isn't fair to you. You need to read this book, the little things that even in dark feelings can be special, the little twists and the feelings you get while reading this book.
This book is completely different from anything I've read before and I couldn't get enough the entire time I read. This one was a page-turner for sure and I can't wait to see what else will go down in Possum Hollow next. Because you can bet your overalls, things are never quiet in the holler!
"This ain't right, Elmer. It ain't." Elmer shrugged. "Most things in life ain't."
Merle He's rugged & 100% man with a chip on his shoulder and a burden on his back. Things were never easy for Merle but they sure as hell don't get any easier for him either. He's as backwoods as it gets but with a heart of gold!
"We can't ... do this. It ain't right." His jaw clenched. "Damn sure feels right to me."
Cherry Cheery is sweet, mostly innocent, and a true animal lover at heart. She's really too good for the holler but it's home and has been for the last 26 years of her life. She's broke, like mostly everyone around her, but that's not the only thing holding her back from achieving her happiness!
Teeth-grinding, hair-pulling jealous over a man who wasn't hers. A man who was her mama's.
This was a little darker of a read compared to M. Darling's previous novels but the all-around grit and grime that takes place in Possum Hollow feels real and the image of this backwoods settlement is painted perfectly. Merle is a sexy read with an important underlying theme: there's a whole lot of evil in this world but there's also good as well.
I absolutely can't wait for the next book in this series!
Holy shit this book blew me away, this is possibly my favorite Moxie Darling book to date, which is saying something considering i've given 5 stars to all the other books. That being said it is a lot darker than the others and throughout the book i found myself happy, turned on, sad, anxious and down right angry and disgusted by some characters. testament to the author who can make me feel such strong emotions for fictional characters. So this book follows the story of Merle who, for his own reasons, is having an arranged marriage with the local shine maker who, in a few words, is disgusting, both internally and externally. As circumstance have it, Merle finds a kindred spirit in his new brides daughter, Cherry. Cherry and Merle fall in love, and the process if gritty and angsty and so god damn hot! I wont say any more because i don't want to ruin it, but i must say that it is down right panty melting, despite some of the darker aspects in the book.
This book is perfection and i cannot fault it in any way! Thank you Moxie for writing this nugget of amazing smut with a hidden gem of a story!
I have been a fan of Moxie Darling's since her Flower Child series and was anxiously waiting the release of Merle. I had a feeling this may be her best work yet and i was definitely right! There was so much more drama in this novel, and i loved the gritty undertone beneath the steamy love story. It was a dark story so beautifully written that you cannot help but read it through one sitting. I stayed up late to finish this novel and it was SO worth it. True there where some pretty rough scenes that make you cringe and shake your head but it's the design of the story and its what makes this story so catchy. Moxie has a talent for creative inscription and the steamy scenes did not disappoint.
I picked up this book and I couldn't place it down till it was finished!!! There was so much fire in the characters even the "villains" have amazingly bright qualities that make you want to truly hate them!! I loved everything about this book!! It's not your typical love story by any means and it's starts in a pretty messed up way! But one can not ignore the truly epic way the story is told the surprises to be found and the hearts to be touched!! I can not wait to find out what's next in Possum Hollow!
I absolutely loved this first installment of the Possum Hollow series!! Merle finds himself in quite a mess trying to save his sister for the millionth time. Merle and Cherry are steamy and fire erupts in more ways than one with these two. Well worth the read
Comprei o livro pela capa. Achei meio sombrio e despertou minha curiosidade. E vou contar que adorei. O livro é erotico e com ótima estória, NÃO É MAIS DO MESMO! É muito bom, ansiosa pela continuação!
Loved this novella and the start to a new series from Moxie! Her writing is so good and descriptive. You can't put it down!! Can't wait for the next in the series, Jethro, coming out in August.
I am a first time reader of Moxie Darling and thought the synopsis sounded interesting and the pages just started turning as soon as I started . She has a way of taking you back into time feeling ,seeing and believe it or not Smelling ( Not a good smell Yuk ! Amaleen )everything that went on , like your there. Merle has to save his sister's life and the only way he can is by marrying the most grotesque woman in the hollow to pay off her Debt , but when he moves in and has to do the most unspeakable things he finds him self overtaken by the only pure thing left within Possum Hollow ...... her Daughter Cherry . You have to read it for yourself because the conniving and evilness that play out on both sides of this story twists at your heart .
Brace yourselves and read the content warnings. Super original plot, quality writing, I can't believe this book doesn't have more great reviews! Dark, brutal landscape where characters have to make decisions based on survival and soul. There are moments where I had to read with one eye closed, but I absolutely loved it. Compelling characters whose complex backstories make their decisions not always straightforward. I didn't expect to find the "dark western romance" I was looking for set in the backwoods of Appalachia! Jethro (book 2) was even better-- now please tell me the author is going to finish the series!
This was my first, my Moxie cherry! I fell in love with this author and her work! I didn't read it so much as devour this book. I think i went in and blinked a couple of times then it was over. This story of Merle, the things he does and has to do. OMG! Its crazy! I don't think i could have been like him and done ALL that. ugh no. When he finds his love, he will go thru anything to keep and protect it. I love that. Perfect first book i think i chose to start with. I have to thank one of my friends for the recommendation tho. Amazing!!
This is about Merle who is put into a really bad situation because he is the older brother to a sister who definitely has a different way of getting through her life. I enjoyed this as you get to read how the relationship between Merle and Cherry develops. This is another great quick book to read by Moxie.
Good story! Very descriptive. I got drawn in very quickly and enjoyed her characters. I thought the sex scenes were well written and showed a good knowledge of what is sexy and what goes through people's minds as they are engaged in it!! Very erotic without being crude! I enjoyed them, however her use of crude slang out side of the descriptions of the sex scenes was unnecessary and not good literary form. That should have been limited to dialogue between characters. I encourage her to continue her writing and look forward to her next novella!
There is something in Moxie’s writing that is so unique, when I start reading any of her books I just can’t put it down until I finish it. This one was no exception, 5/5 stars for everything. Wish it was longer though :)
Real good intense moments just wanted to keep reading. merle, was a hard working good man ,looking out for for his sister, who was the black sheep of the the family. Ended up taking on her bills getting involved in a arranged marriage with the meanest, ugliest moonshiner in the hollow. However she had the prettiest daughter around .Things got really hot at home. VERY hot .loved reading the book.
I really liked this book. I went through several emotions reading it. Mostly hot when the main couple were together but irritation with the hwroines mother. You gotta read it.
Sex,violence and strong language but a depiction of life in the hills in my opinion. We are talking really far back in the hills. Merle is a good guy but he just can't get a break. It's a fast read and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I wasn't sure about starting this but then I know all about the holler and moonshine. Both sides of my family are from Coeburn Virginia so I was curious. I freaking loved it! I could picture so much. I remember walking through the holler, old junky cars here and there along the trees and pathway which scared the hell out of me when I was young yet it was so neat. Had to hoof it all the way which seemed like forever to the house on the hill. Moxie did an exceptional job on this story! I could visualize everything even the toothless nasty smelling Amaleen, whom everyone feared. She was a nasty mean disgusting bitch. My heart was breaking for Merle being forced to marry the moonshine queen. He's not even real and I was getting nauseated for him.
"You'd better get used to a limp dick, because just the thought of you makes it want to crawl back inside me and hide." Focus in on the horrified man...yeah, poor Merle. The very first encounter, hell before the marriage, I would have said screw you my dear sister. PUKE You know the song by Meatloaf? The verse... "I would do anything for love, BUT I WON'T DO THAT!" Ever! Is what I say! I laughed, I cringed and almost puked. I agree with my GR friend Tink Magoo, how the hell did he get a hard on?! I thought about that, omg, if you read this you will understand why we wondered. Could it be it just re-enforces anything can prepare them? As I've mentioned before, in pretty much every book I've read, the heroines statement about being proud that "she" did that to him? Got him HARD. Because there is NO WAY in hell the moonshine queen did anything but make the poor guy ill! ;D
I suppose you could call this a conclusion if you wanted. I feel it needs to be a cliffy because the way this ended, it's not going to be that easy, cut and dry. The issue/problem has not been solved.
After reading Moxie's Flower Child Series I was very curious about where she would take us in Possum Hollow. From the start I was glued to Merle and Cherry's story. The story had my emotions all over the place. Unlike the more positive Flower Child Series where the women in the stories came from loving and secure backgrounds those living in Possum Hollow have never known security. Despite the bleak situation Merle and Cherry find themselves in, the love they have for each other grows. I was on the edge of my seat with my fingers crossed that their story would have a happy ending. The ending was surprising and even after I finished reading it I'm finding myself thinking of their story and wondering what I would have done in their situation. I'm definitely looking forward to reading Jethro to see where Moxie takes this series.
Please know this book is not your typical 'forced seduction' BS, this is an absolute "i-will-take-a-bullet-in-the-head-before-i-f***-someone-like-that" BS!
Merle agrees to marry Amaleen: psychotic evil bitch to safe his sister's life "literally" since she owed Amaleen money they can't pay... Amaleen is not just nasty on the inside... the out side as well! I mean [Spoiler removed]!!! And she has $ and can't even [spoiler removed]?!!! Seriously? It's heart breaking what love could make a person do! So Merle does what he has to! In place filled with "poverty and sorrow" there is not much you can expect!
The very first day he was asked "by the evil ****/his wife" to punish her daughter Cherry "for something wrong she did *eyes role*" since he's the man of the house now *yea right*.... well that turned out to be smoking hot delicious experience for Merel and Cherry... their mutual attraction becomes to powerful to ignore. Their struggles are heart shattering as they go on with their miserable lives without a glimpse of a better future..
I can go on and on, I just have this feeling that no matter what I say or words I chose it still won't do this book justice! Moxie Darling did a fine job writing this one!
it's heartbreaking/disgusting/unjustified/beautifully written short story ... and the end? [Spoilers removed]... I'm NOT happy with it, Moxie pleaseeee fix it..
I can't wait to read the next booking in the series...
Happy reading

Elmer (father) ran/controlled Possum Hollow, W.V. (Appalachian, Mts.) Bess Hargesty had been found bloated & floating in Hogtie Pond. Amaleen Crouse (mom) was a top notch moonshine bootlegger around these parts. Pastor Virgil was going to marry Amaleen & Merle Davis. Cherry Darlene Crouse (26) was Amaleen’s daughter. How will the character’s lives end up?
Warning: This book contains extremely graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive to some readers.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own. A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written West Virginia erotic hillbilly book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great West Virginia hillbilly movie, or a paid-per-view mini TV series. To be contuned. Pretty goofy & steamy hot sex. Wonder what the kids will look like? It was just OK for me so I will rate it at 3/5 stars.

Because I know that some people use the word “hillbilly” as a derogatory term, for the purposes of this review, I’ll be using the acronym PWLOTG (People Who Live Off the Grid). This term describes folks who live completely apart from modern society, in the Appalachian mountains, in communities where they’ve developed their own set of rules/punishments/justice system.
I confess that I’ve had a little bit of a phobia about PWLOTG ever since Deliverance, even though I know that movie was set in Georgia. Doesn’t matter. It freaked me the hell out. I even struggled to watch Next of Kin, because despite my mad love for Patrick Swayze (may he rest in peace) and Liam Neeson, seeing the PWLOTG way of life onscreen just made me...edgy (as did Neeson’s terrible attempt at a Southern accent). I kept expecting Liam Neeson to tell the villain he had a pretty mouth. (Shudders)
So, anyhoo, why did I agree to read this book? Honestly? The author is a sweet, talented lady, and I thought that if anyone can get me over my phobia, it’s her. And she did...mostly. Continued on the blog: http://www.knockinbooks.com/reviews/m...
Possum Hollow is a spin off from the "A Flower Child" trilogy, that brings you to the wrong side of the tracks, down to Possum Hollow. Merle is taking you the first step into this darker series and Moxie Darling does an excellent job making this completely different from the Flower Child trilogy, but not less captivating. I found it easy to imagine this characters to be real, their struggles and how society seems to have forgotten them, but they strive to survive.
Merle is the most adoring character, true to himself and the ones he loves, doing anything he possibly can to protect them. He gets the short end of the stick and struggles to find his way. Cherry is a lovable character, very naive but yet so giving, even knowing she has nothing.
As usual there is lots of steam in this book, but the plot to follow the struggles of Merle takes center role. This is yet another entertaining novella.
I have received this book from the author for an honest review.
I was gifted this book by the author for an honest review.
Have to say this book was not what I was expecting. It was much much better. I think this was my favourite so far. There are some not quite consensual scenes that some readers may find disturbing. In order to save his sister Merle was forced to marry Amaleen. A demented, awful dirty person and 20 yrs his senior. Just the thought of her disgusts him. What he didn't expect was his attraction towards Cherry, Amaleen's sweet soft 26 yr old daughter. On his wedding night he is tasked with punishing Cherry and almost ends up taking her in the kitchen. There is no law in Holler. There’s only living and dying. This story is darker than Moxie's previous releases but i also felt there was more story than just the expected sex and I really enjoyed that. I am looking forward to following this series.
