With the arrival of spring people are on the move again. That includes Trev, who faces the daunting trip from Utah to Michigan to reach his family. He has half the country to cross, racing the clock against the deadline of a possible Gold Bloc invasion from the north. If that happens his destination will be right in the path of advancing enemy forces.
He's left his cousin Lewis and their friends back in Aspen Hill facing a far more immediate threat, as well equipped raiders circle the town looking for an opportunity to attack. The enemy shows no signs of going anywhere, and townspeople already struggling with starvation and harsh conditions find themselves unable to worry about finding food or growing crops while facing this threat. Matt, in charge of the town's defenses, must find a way to defeat the raiders while there's still a town to protect.
Over it all looms the specter of war, threatening everything the cousins and the people of Aspen Hill have worked for as they struggle to survive and protect those they care about.
My name is Nathan Jones. I write mainly in the post-apocalyptic and science fiction genres. My most recently completed project is The Challenge, first book of the post-apocalyptic No More Content series, a collaboration with my brother Seth Jones. My next project is Mythas, first book of the fantasy adventure series Band of Outcasts.
I've been a longtime reader of post-apocalyptic fiction, and like to explore various scenarios in which disasters could occur. One interest has been observing just how fragile our modern life is, and how little it would take to send us back to a low tech existence that people in general no longer possess the knowledge or skills to survive in. That interest inspired me to write and publish my completed post-apocalyptic series Best Laid Plans, comprising the five books Fuel, Shortage, Invasion, Reclamation, and Determination, and to build on that story with the completed Nuclear Winter series, which begins shortly after Best Laid Plans ends and includes the four books First Winter, First Spring, Chain Breakers, and Going Home, as well as the standalone novel Fallen City.
Outside the Best Laid Plans world I've written the completed post-apocalyptic Mountain Man series, with the novels Badlands, Homecoming, Homeland, Mountain War, Final Stand, and Lone Valley. I also have the completed post-apocalyptic Isolation series with Shut In, Going Out, Starting Anew, and Holding On. My current post-apocalyptic series is No More Content, with the recently released first book The Challenge.
I've also been a longtime reader of Science Fiction and Fantasy, with an equally deep love of those two genres. This has inspired multiple projects, the most recently completed being my science fiction novel Caretakers, Book Two of the Stag Privateers series, sequel to Last Stand. My other science fiction story is Boralene, Book One of the Stellar Merger series.
The stories I've written in the Young Adult Fantasy genre have now been moved over from another pen name to be available alongside my other books. These books include the completed The Watchers trilogy with Undying Heights, Ithel's Library, and Deep Dwelling, the completed The Protectorate series with Corsairs, Revenants, Invaders, and Shipwrights, and the standalone children's fairy tale Firefly Girl.
I'm really enjoying this series, it took me til the second book to get into it, now I am invested in the characters and the story. For me it's a little "over written" in detail at some points and I find myself skipping along a page or two. I'm not a writer and no disrespect to the writer it's just how I see it and how I deal with it.
I am heading on to book 4 "Reclamation" looking forward to see what happens next. I'm so glad I found this series, I would recommend it.
First of all this book (and the prior ones), badly needs an editor. There is frequent improper usage of punctuation and sentence structure, with a lot of fragmented sentences, run-on sentences and incorrect tense. It is difficult to appreciate a story when the delivery mechanism is faulty. There was quite a bit of action in the book, but then long periods of introspection (especially Lewis) that kind of killed the momentum. On top of that was Trev's trip across country which was tiring for him, but not too much actually happens until he gets home. For all that it was a 2-2.5 star but I bumped it a little to 3 because there were parts of the book that were entertaining. I am on the fence about continuing.
I love this series because you never know what will happen next. What an imagination this author has. So glad I found the series when all 5 books were written. I would hate waiting months for the next book.
Heart pounding action and intense storyline make this book a great read. The characters are believable and full of heart. Well written and easy to read.
Great book love seeing the young characters grow, extremely pleased to see who Lewis ended up, thank you, had me worried for a min, I always thought he always got the short end of the stick on everything so was happy with the way the way things turned. The only down side was I would have liked to see more on the barter town. Was there a bath house was there more vendors there? What more was available from the vendors was people selling skills? I hope to see this in the next book as the family heads back thru there. Enjoyed reading author said in May but what year? I am hoping this year
The story is great and I really liked the people of Aspen Hill ... Sometimes ....for me ...the writer rambled on about things not pertaining to the story....got to where I just skimmed those paragraphs...made the story easier f or me to follow. I had trouble understanding Jane....in all my years I have yet to meet someone that acted that way....too far fetched for me....Lewis was a little weird too...so I figure the author thought he needed someone like him to love..... But the story I really enjoyed....Aspen Hill residents really have time when the fuel stops.
