Welcome to the One Spire Inn, the only hotel in town that accepts fairy tale monsters as guests. Can a retired monster-hunter and an inebriated fallen angel keep these new guests in line? Jean-Luc Matthias promised to help these wayward mythical creatures... a promise he plans on keeping even if it figuratively or (the more probable option) literally kills him. Too bad he's a man of his word. But preparing fae, succubi, poltergeists, and twice-fallen angels for mortal life is just the start of his problems. A powerful demon is terrorizing the city. And what’s worse, the creature’s bloody deeds are exhuming Jean-Luc’s past. A past that could destroy everything he's built. But if the creature isn't stopped, it might just trigger the apocalypse. Again. Now Jean-Luc has a choice to Stay quiet and hope the storm blows over, or dust off his slayer instincts, thus risking everything and everyone. Vance delivers a knockout punch of fun and fearlessness in every last one of his books. Not only does he make you laugh, he makes you think. That's a rare combination that few authors ever achieve, and Vance does it splendidly." — John P. Logsdon, author of the Paranormal Police Department series. I could not put the book down until I finished it.’ ★★★★★ ‘GoneGodDamn, I was completely charmed by this story.’ ★★★★★ ‘A very funny story...’ The GoneGod World is a unique setting of myths, magic and mischief. But what is the GoneGod World? Four years ago, the gods left. All of them. Their last message to humanity was "Thank you for believing in us, but it is not enough. We're leaving. Good luck." At first no one took them seriously. Until, that is, all the denizens of all the heavens and hells started showing up on people's doorsteps. Creatures from every religion, mythology, folklore or fairytale now live among us, mortal and homeless. Trouble is, after eons of living forever, elves, dragons, dwarves, oni-demons, even friggin’ Medusa aren't very good at being mortal.
Ramy Vance lives in Edinburgh with his wife, recently born child and imaginary dog where he enjoys a beautiful city, whisky (Scottish spelling, not mine) and long walks. All he really wants is to quit his job and write stories based in Paradise Lot. All he really hopes for is that his child is healthy (ten fingers, ten toes and at least two eyes is a good start) and that eventually he can can get a real dog so that he can have an excuse to go on even more long walks.
Well the human race certainly blew it in this story! All the Gods of all the religions had left, yep we had over centuries proved ourselves as unworthy. Lets face it more people questioned their faith and respect for all the commandments was just a joke. So after the Gods departed they expelled the others from heaven and hell, as they too had been forsaken by the Gods. The others were all the mythical, magical and fairy tale creatures that had been just a figment of the humans imaginations before. Just stop and think this is anything from a unicorn to a dragon, a giant to a vampire. Well I thought it was pretty cool and although Jean-Luc Matthias was originally part of an army to get rid of the others he had over time learnt to live with them, literally in his hotel, because of a promise he made. Now although all of these creatures are here in the flesh, fur, scales or feathers they have had to face difficult decisions. They still have their powers but are now mortal and ok they can live so much longer than humans, it is still a bit of a kick in the teeth when not long ago they were immortal. There is a catch too, if they use their powers or magic they burn years off their life expectancy. The air is electric with tension between them all. Will all the species ever be able to accept each other for who they are now, not how they look or how they were remembered? When a stranger calls at the hotel everything changes, there is something pretty special in the air and Jean-Luc will be the centre of it all. Be prepared for an unusual urbane fantasy, funny and at times with more than a hint of darkness and totally entertaining from cover to cover. Jean-Luc is certainly the reluctant hero that is bound to a promise he made to his wife. A wonderful love story that would put any fairy tale to shame and characters that are more than entertaining, especially down at the police station where Medusa is on the stations desk and the three Billy Goats gruff form part of the police force. It is just brilliant unique entertainment. There is of course a serious side to the story too, good is still battling with evil but now at gigantic proportions, with so much more at stake. This is the first book in the series. It made me giggle and smile, get behind the good guys and have punch in the air moments, already downloaded the second book as soon as I finished this one. Just love these crazy characters.
Gonegod World is an interesting book by R. E. Vance. I didn't know what to think of this book at first but shortly I was completely drawn into this book and truly enjoyed it! It is rather different from anything I have read to date which makes this so refreshing, since it is difficult to find that in todays age, especially find something different that is also very good! The book is very well written and follows a perfect pace. I never felt like the story was dragging out nor did I feel like I was being rushed through the story.
The characters are rather interesting and are a mix of mostly paranormal creatures and your main character, a human named Jean-Luc. He is rather interesting and from the first glimpses I got someone I want to read more about! He is surrounded by an interesting mix of angels, tinkerbell, poltergeist and more.
As I said my curiosity is peaked and I can't wait to read more! This book is so different in unique, with a lively writing style that just wants to you to read more!
The premise of R.E. Vance's Paradise Lot series--that all the gods from every religion and mythology are real, but they're tired of us and have finally left, kicking all the immortal mythological creatures like Medusa and vampires and giants down to Earth--is ingenius, creative, entertaining... But what really makes THE GONEGOD WORLD shine is its main character's compassion. While this world of mythological refugees is indeed captivating, it's Jean-Luc, the human who has dedicated his life to helping the Others cope with mortality, and Jean-Luc's rich backstory, that truly grip the reader.
I strongly recommend this series to anyone that enjoys fun fantasy fiction with heart.
This was a great concept. When the gods left their creations were cast onto earth as refugees an epic battle between man and mythical creator's was started. What happens when the battle is over and regular life goes on? Well everyone must adapt and change to build a new reality and co exist.
Reasons for my rating - good premise but I felt the plot jumped around and some scenes felt rushed and others drawn out. The title character was good and his love for his wife strong. So strong I sometimes got bored of reading about it. The supporting characters were vast in number but lacked information so they felt 2D.
I was expecting gods and other mystical creatures, Angels, Medusa, a succubus. What I really wasn't expecting was Steve, one of the Billy Goats Gruff! This book is full of all sorts of magical beings, mythology and fairy tales. It also contains a love story, but not the usual love story. In a world abandoned by the Gods, Heaven and all other realms are cut off from Earth. Jean-Luc's love for his dead wife Bella is so strong that it could be the one thing that actually opens the other worlds. The problem is the person who is trying to take over the other worlds. Jean-Luc will never let that happen, even if it means the ultimate sacrifice.
I started on this and realized I'd read it straight through. Well done. I knocked off a star because of the "please rate me" bleat at the end. I'm not pleased when characters turn into plea-a-thon solicitors.
3.5 stars. I wasn't initially particularly taken with this at first but by the end I was really enjoying it. I love the concept of it. I will be hunting out more in the series. :)
This series is intriguing. I discovered the Mortality Bites series first, in which Jean-Luc appears as a supporting character in parts. This tells his story, and we see his past told in bits and pieces as flashbacks. A well-crafted story, and one I look forward to continuing.
I read the novel (episodes 1 - 4) and am truly enjoying the series. It's a twist on the usual myth/magic/urban fantasy fare. Vance touches on religion, obviously, and hits some of the big questions of Heaven, Hell, faith, love, loss and what, exactly, is a god but is never heavy handed about it. There's an interesting cast of characters and I liked the way they interact and have evolving relationships.
4.5 stars. "I may be alone, but I am not lonely. This world is my canvas and already I have made so many wondrous places." The GoneGodWorld of Paradise Lot, a place and its story - which revolves around the promise Jean-Luc Matthis (missing the Mark) makes to his cherished Bella - is indeed rich with wondrous characters, some you'll know from past great reads and others fueled by Vance's incredible imagination. It's been a long time since I've read a fantasy novel that is equal parts accessible and abstract. If you enjoy stories that provide allegory and easy to grasp satire along with humor, well-written action scenes, questions about the soul of humans and Others, and ideas regarding how many chances a Fallen may get, you'll enjoy the four episodes included in this set. Suitable for tweens on up, though Astarte's character, a succubus, does make her living the old-fashioned way. However, those scenes are not graphic or many, so they shouldn't pose a problem for youthful readers. Might even give parents/teachers and children an opportunity to discuss Love vs Lust. Easily a five plus star read - once the typos receive another proofing.
I don't know how I got so lucky as to stumble upon the GoneGod World of "Paradise Lot," but I wanna stay as long as possible! (Maybe I can book a room somewhere...) As a fan of most things mythic and fantastical, geeky and paranormal, there's really nothing here that I don't love. To be honest, I'm wondering how I managed to miss Ramy Vance till now? Just one book in, and I'm totally impressed with his writing, and completely invested in Jean-Luc's world. I'm a hopeless case, really - I MUST have the next book! It's far more important than sleep, or that staff meeting everyone keeps screaming about.
I checked reviews before picking up "Paradise Lot," and noticed references to Jim Butcher's very excellent "Dresden Files." Since I'm a HUGE fan of that series, I was intrigued. Now that I've read the book for myself, I'm delighted to say that I agree. Jean-Luc Matthias is certainly not a carbon copy of Harry Dresden, nor is Paradise Lot anything like the Chicago of Harry's world, but the humor, and more importantly, the depth of feeling; the keen knowledge of myth and fable, feel real and familiar.
"Paradise Lot" was a joy to read, and I can't wait to dive into, "Keep Evolving!"
When I was asked to give this box set a read and a review I admit to have reservations. I’ve never jumped an Urban Fantasy before, but I was quickly and pleasantly surprised. The stories within are interesting, funny, and full of action.
Image for a moment, that all the Gods around the world and all through history became bored with their roles and decided to move on from their plane of existence. Of course, all their worshipers would be lost. Then to make things real interesting, all the demigods, angels, trolls, fairies and a hundred “Others” were left behind to coexist with mankind.
Mr. Lance has brought this whole hoard of wild characters together in a collage of mythical proportions. Join their stories to try to find their place on earth with the help of Jean-Luc, a former soldier who lost his beloved wife and is trying to find forgiveness for his sins. There is a lot of human and inhuman behavior on display and the stories poke fun our own efforts to fit in.
“Could you hear the angels singing on high while you read this review?”
Addicted to this series. The gods have decided to close shop. There is no Heaven, Hell or anything in between. Anything that was immortal is now mortal.... and they're your next door neighbor. Funny, sometimes genuinely heart wrenching (no book of this genre has ever made me cry but book 2 did) and an excellent guide to ancient mythology ( I see Gilgamesh in a whole new light from this series). Highly recommended.
A world where it seems everything ever dreamed of is real... Every God every mythological creature... Everything. Then the Gods leave suddenly, and everyone and everything falls to earth as mortals, who now must all live together! An amazing concept, extremely well written. Something like Three's Company on a grander scale... With better writers and magic!
I first encountered the gone good world in the Mortality Bites series. The premise that the gods have all left, yup all of them, for reasons not fully explained fascinated me. I was not disappointed. Jean-luc is a true hero and his entourage are the strangest group you could imagine. Thoroughly enjoyed the story.
Wow what a subject, a bit scary to think all the g-ds from all religions have had enough of us. They've sent all the bad things instead, like Medusa. Perhaps it's a message telling us to try and live a better life. Great reading to wile away a day off and relaxing
A simple premise ... the Gods have gone and left us, humans and immortals alike, to fend for ourselves. The author takes the opportunity to indulge in all kinds of absurdity, and it all just works. One must keep reading because it's never clear what might be hiding just beyond the next page.
This book is pretty exciting. The premise that the Gods would just abandon their creations was an interesting theme. I was surprised that more disasterous things didn’t happen between humans and the others. Overall it was a great read!
I was soooo happy to read this first book in the GoneGod set of Series!
As promised, while reading later parts of the GoneGod stories (I started reading the later series, by accident, then couldn't put them down), this beginning book of the whole GoneGod set of series, looks just as interesting!
This book involves a Human, one Jean-Luc Matthias who, when every God that Humanity could imagine, all finally gave up in disgust and left Earth, and our Universe, for pastures new, they left behind every single servant, and even a few demi-Gods, who had to move to Earth when Heaven and Hell were closed down, & the Others left here, ALL suddenly became Mortal!
As you might imagine, a War began between Humanity & some of those Others left behind but, in reality, it became obvious that, if they kept on fighting, it could lead to the end of all life on Earth.
So, this book begins with Jean-Luc, turned from Soldier, to Landlord, as he tries to help Others to adjust to actually living Mortal lives which, much to so many Others' horror, also involved defecating - something that so many of them found horrific, embarrassing, or downright rude! Lol
Jean-Luc, at this time, is a Widower, as his Wife, Bella, was killed, alongside some of the Others she was helping, towards the end of the fighting.
But, lately, Bella had been visiting Jean-Luc in his dreams, giving him quite specific orders, as to what he needs to do, to help the Others in his household, to survive.
But Jean, unlike Bella, isn't as practical as she had been, and he risks losing his Hotel/Home, 'The Single Steeple', due to a lack of money - the Others were still trying to get their heads around the need of having such strange things as pieces of paper or metal - or plastic cards - with which to pay for everything!
But a visitor turns up at his home - an Other, who looks like a Human Man, but with so much Power, that it seems to leak from him constantly.
He introduces himself as Joseph, and Jean can't do anything other than accept him, with so much goodness/power coming off of him and, when even Angels bow down to him, Jean knows that he needs to find out who this Joseph is!
But the trouble is, just as Jean wakes up to a new day, the room where his mystery guest is staying, explodes!
Rushing to him, Jean finds Joseph literally holding himself, and his room - apart from the front wall, which had exploded outwards - together until Jean could manage to fight his way through Joseph's barrier, and into the room - going immediately to the horrifically hurt Joseph.
Just as Jean reaches Joseph, Joseph asks him if he had guessed, yet, exactly what Joseph was and, on guessing correctly, was warned by Joseph that a Storm had artived.
This ended Book one, so I'll be going straight on to Book Two: 'Keep Evolving'', in order to continue reading this fascinating series!
Once I've read this next part of Jean-Luc - plus a host of Others' - story, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!
I can't see it being any different to what I've already read, of this strangely fascinating series, but I'll let you know, anyway!
Kindle Unlimited but was and seems to still be 99 for the trilogy plus the Interludes story, can't really beat that, with Interludes being 2.99 by itself, the rest 2.99 - 4.99 each, though are still 2 not included but will list them below. #1.1 seems to be permafree if you want to check that one out fully, that and the other 2 were written as episodes so may or may not contain the full Gone God World #1 which is not free but is ku}. The review for the 3 plus 1 set is elsewhere.
If his legendary new neighbors don’t drive him crazy, he might just have a shot at stopping the apocalypse…When the gods ditched Earth, the displaced mythical creatures from heaven and hell ended up at Jean-Luc Matthias’ hotel. To keep his business afloat, Jean-Luc is forced to handle the drama from folklore and fairytale creatures who are way out of their element. To say these succubi, poltergeists, and angels are out of touch with the mortal way of life would be an understatement…
While his attempts to prepare his new tenants for the real world lead to one failure after another, Jean-Luc runs into another problem. An ominous Other is terrorizing the night and the creature’s bloody deeds could unearth the hotel owner’s hidden past. If he wants to save his business, protect his legendary tenants, and preserve humanity, Jean-Luc may be the world’s only hope against utter devastation…

To say that this set of books is unique, would be a vast understatement.
I started reading the Gonegodworld as individual books in the series and became quickly hooked. Without spoiling the ever evolving plot, the idea is that the Gods have had enough with being taken for granted and thrown in the towel, leaving humans and all manner of fantastical creatures in total chaos. The characters range from The Bible, Mythology, fairy tales and even children's toys! The humour is quirky and light and fantastically juvenile, incorporating a story that is at times funny, heartwarming and mildly erotic (Succubus anyone)? But also becoming gradually darker. The quote from Milton's Paradise Lost towards the end of this book was a nice touch. One of my favourite poems, this was a nice 'Cameo' appearance from the (almost) eponymous title of the setting.
I enjoyed this series so much that I immediately bought the entire boxed set after reading just episodes 1 and 2 from book 1.
If you have a twisted sense of humour and don't take things too seriously, and enjoy fantasy and juvenile capers with a dark twist, come to Paradise Lot and join in the fun.
Once again, we begin a new adventure into the GoneGod world, this time following Human Jean. The new and old characters bring even more depth and vision than before. I will be start the next book today, and I look forward to more adventures in our beloved Paradise Lot.
Very different, quirky story, with a style of writing and subject matter that is reminiscent, in overall feel, of Gaiman and Adams. The MC is older and is not perfect, but he is working on it. And I really loved the new mythological characters to whom I was introduced. If you are looking for an urban fantasy, with a twist, this story is for you.
This is a fantastic start to the series. I loved the entire premise of the gods taking off and ditching all manner of magical creatures on earth. I just keep wanting to discover more about this world. Fans of mythology will love this series.
