When Yemi meets attractive business man, Akeem Kadiri, during her holidays in the UK, she is swept off her feet. Despite the differences in their family backgrounds, Yemi feels secure in Akeem's love and believes in his promise to protect her always.
But one mistake by Akeem, in a moment of weakness, leads to events that shake Yemi to her very core. Can their love for each other withstand the consequences of Akeem's actions or will Yemi find it easier to walk away?
After the storm is a story of love, heartbreak, difficult choices, and ultimately finding the greatest love of all.
This was a beautiful story overall. I love how the author captured the ups and downs of marriage, family and friendships. I love the faith element embedded in there as well and how we were able to follow the characters' journeys of faith throughout the book. I thought the initial aspect of the romance came across as unrealistic because of how rushed it was. But as I got to know more about the characters I got to love them more and I loved their love. Their romance was my favourite part of the book. I personally wasn't a fan of the really long timeline. I think too many things happened and it was hard to keep up with character names, who they were, and what role they played in the story. Overall, I thought it was a good story which teaches a lot about forgiveness, redemption, and how there is nothing impossible for God to do.
During a holiday in London, Yemi captures the eye of the very attractive and one of Nigeria's most eligible bachelors, Akeem. She falls under the spell of his dark beautiful eyes. Akeem effectively woos her with quiet confidence and rougish cahrm, drawn by her calm and graceful nature. Even though they are together, she is bothered by the wide difference in their social statuses. Akeem assures her that it is not a problem. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with him and efforts are made to make her feel very unwelcome in his family. With the support of her family and Akeem's love and friends, she tries to ignore the frosty attitude of her in-laws towards her and puts all effort into being the best wife she can be to Akeem. All seems idyllic until a horrible storm rocks their peaceful home. A costly mistake robs them of their happy marriage. Bitterness, anger, hurt take over. The love they once had for each other slowly fades as they grow further and further apart. Their young daughter remains their only connection. Even though she knows she ought to forgive as a christian, Yemi finds it difficult to; she feels she is entitled to not forgive him because she had always lived a godly life, going to church regularly and obeying God's word. She was certainly better than her husband who could not rightly say he believed in God. So she is confused and feels indignated when her friends who profess to be 'born again' tell her that she needs a personal relationship with God as if she didn't serve and worship Him. But quietly, she envies the peace her friends have and loathes her turbulent emotions and unsettled and empty life. She feels a void that all the love she had for Akeem cannot fill. Through gentle coaxing from her friends, she comes to know the saving grace of Jesus and basks in the knowledge that He is always there for her. She prays for her husband to come to know what she does. A huge loss hits them and brings them a bit closer. Akeem can see there is something different about her. She is more serene and peaceful, a far cry from the bitter shrew who wouldn't come within a mile radius of him. He hears that she is 'born again' whatever that meant. It is not until a tragedy occurs with the life of a loved one hanging in the balance, that Akeem acknowledges the God he had always known was there, but chose to ignore. And he receives mercy and salvation, forgiveness for his sin and redemption and blessings for what he lost. The characters felt real and relatable. Hostile in-laws are not exactly uncommon to the Nigerian society. And it is known that the rich and affluent prefer to marry within their circle. Akeem and Yemi had so much chemistry even for their difference in age and social status. I like the theme of determination and hard work in this book. Akeem was cocky, confident and a hard worker who put all efforts into continuing with his father's legacy and building an empire as a business man. Yemi though a first class graduate as an accountant, takes up her hobby of designing and sewing clothes and starts her own business, and by so doing, inspires her friends and others around her. I also like the quiet way her friends go about sharing the gospel with her. They do not shut her out because she can not see the light they see. Rather, with love and prayers and through their lives, their light shines and brings her out of darkness into light. I love Abby for telling her things bluntly and not mincing words. My favourite parts of the book was the easy banters Akeem and Yemi had when they first met and they continued even while they were married. They were friends, first, before anything else. I didn't really enjoy the part during Akeem and Yemi's separation where they tried moving on but found that they were still very much in love with each other. I felt that part made the book drag a bit and added to its voluminousness. For me, it took too many chapters for them to find each other again. On a whole, I enjoyed reading After The Storm. It shows that christianity is not just a religion; it does not just involve attending church programmes and participating in activities. Christianity is a lifestyle and a call to a personal walk with God. Relating with Him and knowing Him on a personal and intimate basis as a friend, lover, comforter, saviour and helper.
The past week has been hectic for me, and I chose to unwind with a good book.
I joined bookstagram in 2020, and so many bookstagrammers raved about Osar Adeyemi's books. I loved the snippets of her books which she posted for each new release, and I knew one day I'd read one of her books. @abiola_orungbemi even once told me she wished Osar Adeyemi's books could be made into movies.
In December 2021, I decided to give her a try. I started with A Dance With Destiny. I DNFed it. It was too slow-burn for my tastes and I felt a bit disappointed. I thought 'Everyone was raving about Osar Adeyemi nau. Is it me? Am I the problem?'
Anyway, @topeomotoshowrites told me to read After The Storm by Osar Adeyemi. After checking out the glowing reviews, I decided what the heck.
Boy was I blown away. I get what the fuss is about now. I moved from a chair to the floor to sitting by the front door while reading this book. It was six hours well spent.
Guyss, the first chapter had me smiling like a love-sick idiot. The romance was too beautiful. You guys, Akeem Kadiri almost overthrew Arinze Kalu from Rent A Bae by @unomanwankwor as my number one book boyfriend. (Is there a thing with guys whose initials are AK? Someone, please look into this.) The couple's banter had to be the best I've ever read or at least second only to Cinder and Ella in Kelly Oram's novel of the same name.
The story was perfect. I loved the ups and downs. It's taking all my book home training not to spoil this book. The faith element was tastefully woven into the story. I loved it. I loved how the couple was redeemed and saved. I love the lesson on forgiveness and how morality can't take the place of having a relationship with Christ.
People of God, where can I find a friend like Sesan Williams? He was noble and honourable. A great friend that everyone needs.
I'd recommend After The Storm one billion times over. Osar Adeyemi officially has a new stan. I'm definitely going to go back to A Dance With Destiny which is Aleena's book.
This book is five stars, Golden Buzzer and Chef's Kiss good. If you haven't read it, please do.
In this "billionaire marries the girl" trope, After the Storm tells the story of Yemi and Akeem. Their love seemed perfect and not even Akeem's daunting mother or her disapproval of the union could quench the embers of their love until one wrong decision on a work trip changes the trajectory of their lives. This is a story of second chance, forgiveness, discovering and being one with God. One of my favorite things about this book is the fact that it is Christian fiction even though I didn't really catch on to that at the beginning of the book but when I eventually did, I liked it. I also liked how well the author wrote about Yemi's hubby cum business; fashion designing. However, I felt the dialogue in this book was sometimes bland and lacking in originality. A lot of time was spent on description and it made the story stretch unnecessarily 🥲 I found the characters boring at a point. I had to stop reading at a point, read other books before continuing with this but all in all, it's a nice read 🙂
Whew this story had some many emotions/themes in it. Love, forgiveness, redemption, grief, faith, hope. Yemi and Akeem met , got married, and had a child. Life was good until Akeem made a mistake. I don’t want to give anything away but the road to their HEA was not smooth but I love how they both found faith and an even better love.
I really wasn't sure I would enjoy this book but I was so wrong, I loved it. Didn't want to put it down! Believable, full of substance, excellently written and inspiring. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great job!
So awesome,I read it in hours!!what a lovely story on God's grace and redemption..Plus,the author is so good with her words, and humor,I really enjoyed it.
This story partially takes place in London, and shows that some of the same issues the main characters were dealing with can happen anywhere. I enjoyed reading this book.
I couldn't put this book down. I sat in my car for two hours reading the book; unaware of the time. Such a good love story but sad how infidelity can ruin a happy home. Listen to the warning signs that going off in your head. Run.
