Reaper Chronicles: The Price

Rate this book
The Reaping of souls is a task that encompasses all of humanity. In carrying out that task, Lyssa cared little for the souls of evil that came under her care. That is, until she is given a gift. A gift that would require a price from her that may be more than she can pay.

As she learns of the life of Deacon, can she see what he is, what he does, and still love him?

I did read the author's warning and went into reading this book knowing this is NOT a romance or love story and that it was darker in nature. I went in with an open mind and open heart.

This book is not for the faint of heart. This book is not of fairy tails, true love, knights in shining armor or happily ever after. From the very beginning you are shown what true evil in humanity is or can be, depending on your view. It's raw and graphic and probably one of the best stories I've ever read. I cried throughout the book and felt everything the main character, Lyssa felt. There is violence, rape and death in this book, so if you are easily offended please look elsewhere for something to read. This is not for you.

This is about two soul reapers, Lyssa and Leathan, and how one helps the other in learning how to love every soul they reap at their death. Lyssa is given a gift from her Master through Leathan. He gives her a scythe from their master. A scythe for reaping souls from the dead. This scythe is different from her own. It gives the reaper the internal thoughts and feelings of the person whose souls they've come to collect. It also can pull memories that even the mortal has forgotten.

In walks Deacon. He is everything that evil is and can be. From the moment he walks into the story there is such a darkness around him. Lyssa can feel it. And then he shows how evil he can be. Lyssa knows from what she first sees of Deacon that she will never love this person. She questions what her Master and Leathan are asking of her knowing what she knows.

Lyssa uses the scythe to go deeper into Deacon's memories knowing stronger in her heart that this task is impossible; this lesson will never be known. She delves deeper into the man and is more horrified with each vision. Her heart is breaking for everyone Deacon has harmed and knows that this man deserves no ones love.

After many visions of his evil ways, Leathan takes the scythe from Lyssa to bring them to the very beginning of Deacon's life and follows it to the moment Deacon chooses to walk in darkness and turns from the light. But how is Lyssa supposed to love a mortal after all the lives she's seen him destroy? Will she fail in her task? Can she find a reason to love a man who shows only hate and anger, abuse and death. For that you'll have to buy the book.

This is a very powerful story that brought me to tears many times. As I said before, heed the warning the author provides. This is very graphic and at times very violent. But if you are able to handle the darkness this goes into, I highly recommend this book. It's as dark as it is beautiful. Not everything in life is all roses and fairy tales and this books shows not only the darkness in life but how one can become so very evil. I look forward to reading more from Riley Bryant and will not hesitate to one click his next book.

Heed the warning - this is NOT a love story.

I went into this thinking it was a dark erotic romance, so my view might be skewed. I was pretty horrified, thinking the expectation was that I'd be titillated by the events in the story. It wasn't until the end that I realized that was not the goal, but I still question the necessity of the graphic erotic content. For the sake of the star rating, I'll go on the notion that if I had gone into it with the correct expectation, I would have had a better experience. I did like the overarching 'moral of the story' - what love really is, and the narrative vehicle, the Reaper's perspective, seemed to me to be an interesting framework for what is, at its heart, a philosophical discussion.

The writer's style is very formal, and very passive - which may be expected in the genre, but I felt dissociated with the story (which may have been for the best, given the content) and I felt the pace was slowed -- and a bit muddled -- by the narrative style.

My rating here on Goodreads is probably a 2.5 stars - it was just a little more than okay for me.

"Love is about who you are, more than it is about who they are."

A unique and dark story. A very descriptive journey of a reaper's quest to open her heart and find the good in a tainted soul. Lyssa must find something to love about the souls that she has been sent to set free.
Deacon's stained soul is giving Lyssa extreme grief. His evil and violet actions are appalling. How can she ever find the love in the man she seeks in order to set his soul free?
Readers Chronicles: The Price isn't for the faint of hearts. If you enjoy a dark and violet read, I strongly suggest checking out Riley Bryant. I'll be keeping an eye out for future releases by this author.
