Matt-Zoe

3.5 Stars

Zoe was stationed in Japan on her second tour for the Army when she got the call her parents had been killed in a car accident. She immediately left the Army, to go back home and take care of her 8 year-old-sister, Jasmine. She is grappling with the past. She believes she was a failure in her parents eyes because she joined the Army instead of attending college. Her mother trained horses and her father had been a college professor. She feared she didn't fit their mold of a perfect daughter. Now she's home having to not only take care of her sister, but she has to run the horse business and figure out what she's going to do with the rest of her life.

Matt is Jasmine's 3rd-grade teacher. He's kind, caring and has a good heart. He was raised by a tyrant of a father and forced into the family business. After a tragedy occurs, Matt finds solace in college and eventually as a teacher. But the past still haunts him.

Charles Sheehan-Miles delves into the individual lives of these characters and gives us a character study.  We learn about the struggles these characters are going through and what they've faced in the past that has shaped them into who they are today. Unfortunately, I felt the love story was secondary. While the writing was good, I didn't feel the romance.

I am a huge fan of this author and loved his Thompson Sister's series. This book may not have been my favorite, but I am still a fan and will undoubtedly read more from him.

4 - "Maybe we need to start over." Stars!

I am a big fan of Charles Sheehan-Miles’ books, he always manages to take standard tropes and make them uniquely his own. Matt & Zoe definitely sits in that category, in that it’s a romance, but for me that wasn’t the main focus of the story.

Grief is a funny thing, it shapes how we behave, who we are, and what we choose to become in the aftermath of the loss we experience. For Zoe Welch that grief and loss is very much at the forefront of her life in this story, having lost her parents, her career and her life path in the space of one accident. She is thrust into the civilian world without any real plans of what she now wants to do, where to start in relation to dealing with the legacy her parents left behind or the fact that she is now also responsible for her eight year old sister, a child she barely knows and who is struggling in her own way to work through the loss of her parents.

It never crossed my mind that they wouldn’t be there today, tomorrow, next week, next year…

Matt Paladino is dealing with his grief in a completely different way, after losing his father years ago to a freak circus accident that he blames himself for, he has completely removed himself from that part of his life, now settled as a teacher in South Hadley, and his days revolve around routine, structure and following a lesson pre-approved plan. But teaching is pretty much the only thing he has in his life, until one fender bender changes the course of everything.

Without my even realizing it, Zoe and Jasmine have broken me out of my isolation.

I think the other main theme of Matt & Zoe is trust, because both of them have massive issues with it, Zoe jumps to conclusions, and Matt evades talking about anything that remotely touches on his past, which makes for a few crossed wires and rash judgements between them. Jasmine is the initial connection due to Matt being her teacher, and as such he takes a very active role in helping her overcome her grief, while building a relationship with Zoe.

She needs me right now. And I'm determined not to fail her.

This story is a little different from the past books I have read by this author previously, there are a lot of side stories playing out around the whole Matt/Zoe/Jasmine situation which kept things moving along, but it also kind of detracted a little from the relationship that you were expecting to grow between the main two characters as the story developed. For the most part, it felt like a secondary aspect for a large portion of the book and lacked a little depth because of it, then in the last 10% everything works itself out and I kind of questioned how both of them could come together in such a way after spending so much time not talking about what was important throughout the book.

It wasn’t a struggle to read, but it was unlike any of the books I have read in the past by this author, and there were also several secondary characters that had potential for stories of their own.

ARC generously provided by the Author, and it was my pleasure to provide the above honest review.

Zoe has just returned home from the military after losing her parents, so she is suddenly taking on a motherly role for her eight year old sister and is a bit clueless about it.

Matt and Zoe's first impression of each other was not good. A second brought more understanding. Matt is her sister's teacher and they find themselves needing to band together to help her young sister during this difficult time.

Matt was quiet and a bit of a loner, but was also in a position of speaking for fellow teachers that often makes him a target for scrutiny. He keeps his past guarded, hides a lot of his true self, and has feelings of guilt, loss, and shame stemming from past events.

Zoe was also a loner and used to being independent. This new role is overwhelming for her especially since she barely knows her sister. She is nervous, closed off, and untrusting. And she has her own grief, regrets, and loss to deal with.
This was a sweet, intricately built story of two people marked by their pasts and trying to find their way in the present. They both could use a true connection, but are used to being alone and not opening up fully. Their facades hide their loss, fears, guilt, and loneliness.

I felt like there was a lot of time spent developing their back stories an current problems. And even the town locations and school board issues were clearly described and defined. There was a slow build of a friendship and relationship, but I missed real chemistry and passion between the characters. I do not really need sex scenes to illustrate that, but I felt it was somewhat lacking an intimacy and true vulnerability and connection between the characters because they both were so closed off. It seemed like at times the romantic relationship took second place.

This was a story with a lot of emotional situations. I liked the characters and getting dual points of view. The flashbacks were essential to understanding the past, but sometimes they seemed to take me out of the story and then I would have to refocus. I liked that they both had to face difficult situations both in their past and present and try to move on from them. But I honestly cannot say I truly connected with the character's relationship on a deeper level. I wanted to feel it. I wanted them together. But because they both kept so much hidden and did not easily open up, they often seemed to be at arm's length. And the end came more quickly than I wanted it to without a chance to further delve into the deeper romance.

I did like the side characters of her crazy cop friend, Nicole and his outgoing, outspoken friend, Tyler who added some comic relief. And even the more mysterious vet Luke shined in the scenes he was in. And the young, scared, sad sister Jasmine was another character dealing as best she could with the difficult situation she was placed in. I liked Matt and Zoe's devotion to helping Jasmine and the building of the relationship with her.

This story had unique and interesting elements and likable characters, but I sometimes felt sidetracked by their pasts or all of the situations around them versus the actual relationship and love connection between Matt and Zoe. But it was also about personal growth, forgiveness, redemption, and family and the characters did make progress on those levels. I liked it, it was just different than I am used to from this author and maybe not quite what I was expecting.

Zoe Welch didn’t think that she’d quit the army because she had to go home to take care of her eight-year old sister, Jasmine after her parents got into a car accident that have taken their lives. Now, at her early twenties, she travelled from Tokyo all the way back to US to take a whole set of responsibility she never planned on. She didn’t even know where or how to begin.

Matt Paladino is her sister’s 3rd grade teacher who isn’t afraid to take an extra mile for the kids or for the people he is fighting for at work. He’s handsome, athletic and knows a thing (or trick) or two about riding horses. They both care about Jasmine, and it’s the reason that has brought them together.

Both of them have secrets in their past they weren’t comfortable in sharing. Both have their hearts and trusts broken by other people – and to once again risk it would be a big task for the both of them. Will they allow themselves to risk and fall? Or would allow their past to dictate their future?

Why I love Charles Sheehan-Miles?
· He writes the most unexpected things that will surprise you.
· He makes it more than just romance, but still has that sweet, romantic thing going on that can still make you swoon.
· He writes about social issues that some writers don’t want to dwell on.
· He raises awareness to his readers with his books (entertainment + information = must-read!)

This was more than just another romantic story, this has more to it. Despite the fact that it’s less action than the Thompson sisters I still found it great and interesting. With both of their pasts being laid down before us, we understand what they had went through, what’s going on and why are both of them reacting that way in the present. Their struggles are real, anyone can relate to it, especially those at the service, and those who have lost people they love. There are moments in this book that was beautiful and overwhelming, it almost brought me to tears.

It’s a story about family. It’s about love. It’s about losing someone, and finding someone. It’s about grief – accepting and overcoming it. It’s about facing your fears and being brave enough to face the inevitable even though you are nowhere ready for it.

I liked this story, but I didn't love it. I have read several of C. Sheehan-Miles books. I love his blend of military theme through all of them and his writing style is good. I usually get caught up in his character development but didn't feel the same with this story. He did bring me to tears a few times, but not in the way he typically effects my emotions.
The characters Matt and Zoe, are in their mid-to late 20's but I felt the romance was very immature for their age. Let me explain because I don't want anyone to miss understand me. The intimacy level for the Matt and Zoe was very PG, their characters were not immature. I felt like some of their interactions were skipped over, so I didn't feel the level of relationship that they had. I felt given the nature of both their history that they had experienced some significant trauma that their might be some level of intimacy through the course of the story and their isn't in the traditional sense.

Overall though, good read!

I liked the book, but it's nowhere near the author's best work. Both Matt and Zoe are hampered by grief, making them both secretive and distrustful. Both seem to be a little put out at the other for not opening up, but pot/kettle and all that.

I really felt for Jasmine. Being an eight year old who just lost her parents in a freak accident is horrible enough, but then her sister/guardian starts dating her teacher? That's too much for a kid.

Zoe's military background was woven into the story really well. All Zoe's anxieties around trying to live a normal life after seeing combat, and her connecting with other vets on campus were some of the best parts of the book.

The romance was very much a slow burn, almost too much for the ending to really work. At that point I wasn't invested in their relationship enough yet.

Bonus point for the circus subplot, I didn't see it coming, but I found it kind of fascinating.

I've read The Thompson Sisters series and what likened this story to his previous books are the talk about being in the military. Although it doesn't center on the topic, it still gives a huge impact on the book and its characters. Matt & Zoe differs in a sense that it's light-hearted compared to the books preceded it. I liked this book, and the fact that it's written by a man was also a plus because I don't often read a man's work. And this reads just right up my ally.

Matt & Zoe landed somewhere between being okay and me liking it. The premise is a great one. Zoe is discharged from the Army to go back home to take care of her eight-year-old sister, Jasmine, after the unexpected death of their parents. Matt is a teacher at Jasmine's school. He's been bumped up to third grade teacher and finds Jasmine once again in his class. Which bring Zoe and him together. They are both battling ghosts of their pasts while trying to help Jasmine through this difficult time. It's a story of forgiving your past and loving your future.

I felt a bit stuck with the story at times. There were clues about Matt's past that when the reveal of what he had gone through came, I had already suspected and wasn't even a little surprised. So much of the story focused on Matt and his past. There were hints of things Zoe had gone through while she was in Iraq, and the failed relationship she left behind in Tokyo when she returned home. Her time in Tokyo seemed minor in comparison to her memories of Iraq, which was strange to me. I kept waiting for some big thing to be revealed about what happened while she was in Iraq. I even had theories but nothing really came of it. I kept trying to connect with Zoe, understand why she felt the ways she did, but I just couldn't. I kept waiting to know more about her story and it never really came. I never really connected with Matt & Zoe as a couple because it was never really addressed. It never felt like they were or are even seemed like they were dating. Jasmine actually seemed like the most grounded of all despite the adults mentioning she wasn't okay. There were moments that happened that I wish had been expanded. They were such important parts, I felt, to Zoe's journey and story, and yet they were just left almost untouched.

It wasn't until the end that the story started to pull me back in. I really enjoyed the end pulling all the past and present stuff together. The epilogue took me out again a little bit. I'm all for tying things up, that's what the epilogue is for, but it felt more like a bow. It touched on the things I was expecting to have been more deeply addressed earlier in the story. Overall it was a good read.

Charles Sheehan-Miles', Matt and Zoe, struck a cord with me for many reasons. Filled with references to what life is really like when a soldier leaves the Army, set in one of my favorite places on Earth, and what true self sacrifice looks like, Matt and Zoe is a great read.

Zoe is an Army Sergeant who separates from the Army because her parents are killed in a freak, tragic accident and she must return to her hometown to raise her younger sister, Jasmine. Zoe is no sissy. She served as an MP (military police) in Iraq for goodness sake! She can handle being under pressure, making split second decisions and taking charge of a situation. She does not, however, have a CLUE as to how to raise her eight-year-old sister. Faced with grieving both her parents and the loss of her Army career, Zoe must set her shoulders and soldier on...because her little sister needs her to.

Unbeknownst to Zoe, she has an ally. Matt Paladino is Jasmine's second grade, and then her third grade teacher. Matt gets Jasmine. He's one of those teachers that kids can count on to be straight with them and consistent in their expectations. With Matt's help, Zoe can give Jasmine the stability that she needs. Along the way, Matt and Zoe connect in more than just a parent/teacher kind of way. And like any good romance, there are secrets, miscommunication, missed opportunities and swoon-worthy moments.

Set in one of my favorite places in the country, Western Massachusetts, familiar places, like UMASS, Amherst, and Northampton, all made Matt and Zoe's story seem real. Being able to actually see those places in my mind meant that I could feel the fleeting warmth of summer as autumn approaches. Knowing the culture of the area made the local events more real.

Matt and Zoe is an easy read, perfect for curling up in your favorite chair and getting lost in.

I liked this book, I didn't love it. I have read Charles Sheehan Miles books in the past which I loved. This was okay.
Zoe , who is in the Army just found out her parents died and had to go home being the only guardian for her eight year old sister, Jasmine. Zoe hasn't been home in years, her sister almost a stranger to her but she is all she has.
Matt is Jasmine's third grade teacher, who left his old life as a circus performer to teach. He is very close to Jasmine and tries to help her out with losing both her parents.
Matt and Zoe spend a lot of time together and are starting to fall for one another. But Matt is keeping his former life in the circus a secret. Zoe has been crushed before and doesn't know if she can trust Matt.
It wasn't a bad story, I just couldn't get into the whole circus thing. I also didn't feel that much chemistry between Matt and Zoe. Zoe seems standoffish.

Good but quirky

I have become a huge fan of CSM, he's a very good writer. This book is no different, original and descriptive. It was a bit too quirky for me, I think it was the circus storyline. I've personally never been a fan and I couldn't get that annoyed feeling away every time I read more about it. I don't want to judge a book based on my personal creep-outs, just wanted to clarify how some of the story and details didn't speak to me.
I also wish the story didn't perfectly wrap up with the note left at the door, a quick google search on the random desktop computer...eh' I think I was so engaged with the tragic beginning, I was looking for more of a struggle or drawn out conclusion. I felt a bit cheated and rushed instead. Overall however, Charles Sheehan-Miles' writing was engaging, the characters had depth and were interesting, I would honestly recommend any of his books, maybe not begin with this one but don't leave it out either.

Charles Sheehan-Miles always delivers an excellent story. His characters come to life and their story is credible. He always delivers a story with unique subject matter.

Although Matt & Zoe wasn't overly romantic it was an emotional story. A story of dealing with grief, regret, and PTSD. It also emphasized the problems in our public educational system. It also highlighted the lost world of the circus.

Matt & Zoe was a very good book.

Charles once again delivered a thought provoking story.

I always love Charles Sheehan-Miles books. I love how he crafts his stories. Matt, Zoe and Jasmine's was beautiful. They have all gone through traumatic experiences and they are all dealing with grief in their own way. I love how the romance is weaved into the fabric of the story, but it isn't the base of the story. I loved it. Highly recommend.

Another stunning story!

Sheenan-Miles has yet to disappoint. This story had everything I've come to expect from him, but such an interesting twist to the typical story line. And so many great side characters with stories to tell.

I struggled with Matt and Zoe.  While I loved the premise, I felt like it lacked oomph.  Zoe is discharged from the military after her parents death. She's sent home to care for her young sister.  Matt is Jasmine's third grade teacher.  He's got an interesting background, one that not only affects who he is, it's also the cause of his nightmares.

I love that Charles Sheehan Miles uses his talent for writing to bring to light the realness of what today's soldiers endure.  In this case its Zoe, a female MP (military police) who spent time in Iraq.  He doesn't shy away from issues of sexism, misconceptions, nor the very real traumatizing dangerous situations female and male soldiers face every day.  My father was in the Army.  I totally got it.  I remember his view on women in the military.  I know that if he were alive today he'd probably still feel like a female in the military should never see the front lines.  He thought women to be inferior in that regard.  He didn't mean any harm it was just his reality.  He'd been to Vietnam after all.  I'm sure he saw things, no I know he saw things he would never want anyone much less a woman to have to remember.  I'm so happy that Mr. Sheehan Miles took that on and then some.

So while I love that the author chose this platform for Zoe, I thought Matt's story overshadowed Zoe's and therefore left her flat.  Matt's personality was perfect for Zoe and I think his background did lend to a mutual understanding.  However Matt worked through his demons while I felt Zoe did not.  She can't be "fixed" over night.  There's no healing moment that can happen.  Zoe's character is forever defined by her experiences.  That alone should have been enough for her character, except she also has to grieve her parents, take on raising her sister, and sort out her new life.  And explore a relationship with Matt.  I kept thinking that this story didn't need romance.  Even though it wasn't heavy on the romance it still could have played out without it.  I would have been just fine with Matt and Zoe being friends.  Or even this being a story about Zoe and her sister.

I liked this story, I love Charles Sheehan Miles writing and I can't wait to see what he does next.

Zoe Walsh is unexpectedly back in her hometown. After a freak accident kills her parents, she separates from the Army and returns home to raise her 8 year old sister, Jasmine. Not only is Zoe dealing with the grief of losing her parents, but she also struggles with the feeling of disappointing her parents and what she will do next now that her life plans have been completely rearranged.

Matt Paladino is running from his past, keeping it close to the vest now that he’s a third grade teacher. He is also his school’s union representative to the school board, and as contract negotiations continue to deteriorate, he finds himself between a rock and a hard place.

These two do not have a favorable first meeting, and their second isn’t much better but begins to shift things into perspective. With the shaky start, it’s a wonder they even consider a second chance, and if not for Jasmine’s presence in both of their lives I question if they would have ever given the other the time of day. It often felt more like they were spending time together for Jasmine rather than for any true interest in a relationship. Though they developed a close friendship, the Matt’s secrets and Zoe’s walls made it difficult for either to show any vulnerability or intimacy.

I loved Jasmine and Mono. Her connection with that horse was magical and gave a sweet innocence, even in her grief, that was touching. Jasmine’s presence in the story, to me, became the glue that held these two together. I loved the way she struggled with her grief in a real, honest way, and reacted as a normal third-grader would.

The other side characters added a touch of humor that was needed with all the heavy emotions Zoe and Jasmine were dealing with. Nicole and Tyler both have a lack of verbal filter that had me laughing at their antics. Nicole's stories also served to lighten the mood with her experiences with drunken students.
This was a sweet story that felt at times more like a character study than a full romance novel. There were significant emotions within each character as he or she navigates the present. Grief, guilt, regret, and pressure from work surround these two characters. They had intriguing backgrounds that made me want to know more about them as they worked through their present situations. While this wasn’t exactly what I was expecting when I began, in the end, the characters had grown on me and their ending was sweet.

I loved the Thompson Sisters so offering up my read/review skills to CSM is never a hardship !! I enjoyed this story and as always I love the uniqueness in his writing and the different feels I get when reading his work. I will agree with some saying I didn't feel a huge connection physically and sexually between Matt and Zoe but that didn't really matter to me because they had so many other connections and it seemed inevitable that they would end up together. Not only that but I could easily connect to them as individuals , as a couple and in their life situations. They both dealt with very real life issues and the emotions were there throughout the story. That piece of information Zoe comes upon towards the end was a crazy twist of fate - I love that.

Zoe was an only child up until her teen years. When her little sister was born she was almost out of high school and getting ready to enlist and leave home. What she thought was her father's disapproval we find to have been his fear , what she thought was him feeling let down was really him being so proud. Sadly these assumptions led her to miss out on some of the last years of her parents lives. Now having to leave the service and come home to raise her 8 year old sister Zoe is forced to face her past and re-evaluate her future. If the journey Zoe takes with her sister and herself doesn't have you feeling I don't know what will !!

Matt has escaped his family but not his past. Growing up in his family was not easy. You were expected and trained to be part of the family business and for years that was never a problem. But between the girl and the accident Matt could no longer be a part of this and leaving his home and family has caused some major issues. One student comes along and changes everything for him.

Jasmine opens up a door for both Matt and Zoe to heal and face their pasts. This little girl has lost so much yet here she is getting her life back with the help of her amazing teacher and her sister. Ok so her help also comes by way of her horse - that in itself is amazing. Neither Matt or Zoe know what to do with their feelings for each other but thanks to Jasmine things kind of get figured out for them !! As much as there is pain in this story there is also some wonderful healing.

A bit slow moving at first but a lovely story. Best last 10% of a book I've read in a long time. There were tears. Happy tears. No steam, no sex, just a sweet love story with a back story of tragedy that held it together. I am a big fan of the author and I love that the story took place in an area I know pretty well, too. (I've even been to a wedding in the Mount Holyoke chapel he described so well!), and that Matt was a third grade teacher and so am I, and that a third grader's parent passed away and I have dealt with that as well. So I could relate to a lot of the plot personally. I recommend to everyone.

SWEET STORY

I will say that I will read any book that Charles Sheehan Miles writes. He draws you in and makes you feel you are living the story, and I dearly loved The Thompson Sisters saga. This story just didn't have the substance or the punch that I am used to with his books. Maybe just a little too light?
And how lovely to hear that he and Andrea are getting married. Two wonderful authors!

This one was just 'OK' for me. I think maybe because I came into it expecting a Romance based on the cover, description and other books I've read from the same author. This book was less of a romance and more about two people who are learning to overcome tragedies together.

There is no denying that the author is good at what he does, this just wasn't the kind of book that I was looking for.

2.5** This was more just Matt and just Zoe with hardly any Matt + Zoe which was really disappointing since it was released for Valentine's Day. I didn't care for the army story stuff or the circus stuff. I wanted romance especially since the title eludes to that.

Not what I expected.

This book was just ok, I wish I could say it was a 5 star but there just wasn't a love story until about 90%. The book had other good qualities but parts just dragged on and on ...

It was good the story did not have quite the depth to it as his other books, sometimes lost me in the middle. I loved the last few chapters and the epilogue when she finally went into the garage and read the journal! Matt, Zoe, and Jasmine a family!!

I loved this book as I enjoyed several other titles by Charles Sheehan-Miles. His books are not simple -- you will find an array of emotions and situations. Great characters, too!

What a beautiful story! Charles is a talented writer without a doubt. The Thompson Sisters is still my favourite series of his but it is an incredible novel on its own.

I am in a book slump so I’m re-reading books from 2016. I couldn’t make it past 50% 🥱😴 snoozefest
