I wanted so much more from this book. I should have listened to other reviewers. This book covers issues potentially catastrophic to a marriage’s foundation and never shows HOW these issues were overcome.

It’s fucking criminal.
The author failed in her delivery.
COMPLETELY.

I only learned that men were, essentially, pigs if given the chance. Her husband was gross. And because BOTH of their behavior/adventures were so egregious they needed to be dealt with, I needed to know WHY and HOW they were able to come back together. To find happiness and trust.

Because that ending...the WORST.
Hands-fucking-down.

The H’s assistant (whom he cheated on the h with...after they had given each other passes to do so and were now back together), writes a best selling novel about those crazy Gen X’ers and how they killed “Love” for her generation. Leaving them to find and recreate new relationship boundaries. The H/h laugh and mock the article about the assistant from their self-satisfied, superior intellect and saved relationship that weathered the storm of that “little girl” without showing us how they got to this point and I call BULLSHIT.

This book answered nor solved any of the lofty goals the author prattles on about in her reasoning for writing this book.

I love angst. Throw in a marriage on the rocks and I am ready for an all-nighter reading. This shit...this was a waste of my time. Don’t get me started on how poorly written it was. The character POVs were so flat and removed from the action I had trouble believing either of them had enough empathy to be worth the contrived pain and drama.

In the end, this book failed to deliver its promise.
I haven’t been this irritated with a book/author in ages.

Disappointing read

I should have known that outside of the couple's bet, there would be cheating. While the couple is in the bet time period they both sleep with other people which I don't consider cheating since they were separated but once they get back together, one of them has an affair. The story gets wrapped up and you don't even know how or why. At the end of one chapter things are unresolved and then at the beginning of the next everything is resolved with no explanation. Don't waste your time like I did.

A well-written contemporary romance that’s insightful, witty and relatable...

Author Orna Landau weaves a very engaging contemporary romance. With intriguing twists and turns, it will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints a mesmerising story addressing issues of a middle aged couple in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a novel that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last.

The book description gives an intriguing preview: ‘It's Sarah's 45th birthday, and her husband, Ben, jokingly says that she is stuck with him, because the chance of a woman her age finding a new man, is smaller than being attacked by a terrorist.

Sarah, who finds this statement both insulting and depressing, proposes a bet: they will separate for three months. During those three months, they will both be free to explore other sexual partners and prove to each other that they are still attractive to others. Together they set down the rules: they will tell no one, they will not date any of their mutual friends, and they most definitely will not fall in love. Thus begins “The Bet".

The happy couple begin their exploration of love and commitment, sure they will succeed. But very soon, they discover that rules are made to be broken and a Pandora box once opened, cannot be closed.’

Now, if that’s not enough to get your curiosity juices flowing, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. It’s my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.

This was a captivating read that had me engrossed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There’s an ample supply of attention-grabbing and thought-provoking moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a compelling and fascinating journey.

It’s one of those books that come along occasionally that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.

If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Orna Landau in the future. A well-written contemporary romance that’s insightful, witty and relatable. I would recommend this book to all fans of contemporary romance and would add that it has a has a distinctly cinematic feel to it. A well-deserved five stars from me.

🚨🚨🚨SPOILER ALERT 🚨🚨🚨

The blurb's self explanatory but what is left out is that while he has several OW during the time they are apart of course she gets involved with only ONE man.🤦‍♀️ Then the "Zero" who is very dissatisfied when he realizes that his wife has found a partner decides to end the bet and the couple unites again.
Still not satisfied with so much sexism, the author decided to add one more cliche to the plot: when he heard that his woman was VIEWING HAND IN HAND WITH OM (during the bet) he starts to feel insecure and apparently his previous sexual escapades weren't enough so he starts a torrid affair with his assistant. After enjoying the pleasure of reading (in detail) how much he enjoys the company and sex with OW and how much he isn't sorry after the "zeroin" catches them in the act 🤮🤮 We still have to read about the pathetic caricature of a woman (as always) who blames herself and is depressed all the time for having thrown her husband into the arms of OW.🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
The "H" ends up getting tired of his mistress and after all that at least we expect some grovel, explanation or some process of reconstructing their relationship but NOOOOOOP, ZERO, NADA! We have only a "1 year latter" and the couple magically appears reconciled and booom! HEA! The author tries to explain where the idea came from but I didn't see any crap in all this nonsense.😒😒
I'm still looking where is the romantic comedy here? The only thing I saw was the same damn double sexist patterns and the typical pathetic speech of a cheater who didn't know how to keep his dick in his pants.
Furthermore the "author" gave the impression that she simply couldn't deal with the direction the plot took and decided to finish the book in half. After finishing reading this exemplary summary of what it's have a misogynistic and sexist thought I really (reeeeeally) felt ashamed of being a woman and what we're being reduced to by ourselves (again).🤦‍♀️😒

2.5-3 stars. I liked the sound of this book because it seemed like it could be thought provoking and it features a married couple. It’s a good premise, but fell short on the delivery even though the writing was fine. I see that it was originally a best seller in Israel and Germany, but it didn’t quite translate to that level for me, however I can overlook the punctuation and typo errors for that reason. Sarah and Ben reminded me of a hippie couple more than anything as far as how to describe them. This could’ve been really insightful, but wound up shallow in multiple ways, especially in their actions. When examining such a long term marriage and what commitment means and then immediately jumping ship at the first opportunity, I was a bit disappointed, more so in Ben than Sarah, despite given the liberty to do so. Yes, I realize men and women are not alike. However, they did not communicate well, Sarah talked to everyone else more than Ben about what she was feeling. When it came time to reunite, things fell apart and then I was thoroughly unimpressed with Ben to where I couldn’t even sympathize. I had to read this clinically since I couldn’t exactly relate with either one. And then there were loose ends and gaps. It was like an entire chapter was missing right before the very last one. I didn’t get sufficient closure and resolution by the end point, where I could clearly see what lessons Ben and Sarah had learned and if there was regret and remorse, so it concluded on an incomplete note for me.

Oh dear I thought After I Do was bad, but this takes the cake. Bad writing, flat characters, a terrible storyline, and a pathetic creature of a husband who gets forgiven no matter what, but apparently it was too much effort to write the reunion so that happens off page. Boring, predictable and ridiculous. This is not a love story, but a lesson in a toxic marriage which should have ended in divorce.

Middle aged couple decides to open their relationship to see if there something else for them and if they settled for each other’s. Three months with three rules that they brake one after another.
A book about mature and long relationship that raises questions about yourself and relationships with people.
I didn’t mind the open for interpretation ending even though the ending could be so much better if it was different

What happened?

Is the book missing a chapter? I know I didn't miss one in my reading. I enjoyed the book, in parts, but on the whole I'm left with a feeling of disappointment. The explanation of how and why the protagonists find their way back to each other is missing. I'm sorry to say that I couldn't recommend this to anyone.

Inerestingly different

The book is well written. The plot is unusual and the story is carried out interestingly. Certainly gives food for thought.
Minus one star for some odd typos, grammar and punctuation mistakes and weirdly split words. There were not that many, but when you encounter them they are rather distracting.

Makes you wonder

How it can go from lust to love to mundane in a 20+ year marriage, this is what this book is about.
How a regular couple can make it or brake it?
A great read. Very insightful and it probably rings true to many.
Liked it very much.

Atypical Romance

- This is pretty different from other romance books I’ve read. It’s premise was entertaining for this long-married reader and it didn’t go where I thought it would. I really enjoyed the authors writing style of letting us analyze the characters for ourselves.

Inhalt

Fazit

‘Nobody said the world was fair…’

Israeli author Orna Landau earned her degree in Comparative Literature and now teaches advanced creative writing while heading the Translated Fiction department at Israel’s largest publishing house. She has also enjoyed success as a journalist, a television critic, and an award winning novelist for both the YA and adult audiences. She lives in Tel Aviv.

Cleverly introducing her story with a tense Prologue titled ‘How to throw your life away while sober,’ Orna writes, ‘There’s a reason teenagers wage bets: they have so very little to lose, only their futures, yet to happen. But when a woman in the midst of a midlife crisis, a woman who – like a teenager – is willing to wage a bet. Or go on a stupid dare, then it is indeed a whole life that’s on the table – a full, flawed life, frivolously thrown away. They were having dinner. Two beers and a steak for him, a chardonnay for her leisurely sipped, over pasta. It was her forty-fifth birthday. She’d hoped he wouldn’t forget and he hadn’t.’

And from that curtain-raiser the insightful story beings, as the provided synopsis states: ‘It's Sarah's 45th birthday, and her husband, Ben, jokingly says that she is stuck with him, because the chance of a woman her age finding a new man, is smaller than being attacked by a terrorist.

Not only is this novel well fashioned and immersing, it also is a platform from which to address all issues of middle age decisions, disappointment, confrontations, and new beginnings. The story and its message are solid: the thoughts and reflections – important and welcome. No wonder this book has been so successful in its original publication. Recommended.

- Atlantik

20 Jahre Ehe - 3 Monate Auszeit - 3 einfache Regeln:

1. Die Wette bleibt geheim
2. One-Night-Stands sind nur mit Fremden erlaubt
3. Liebesaffären sind tabu

New York:

Orna Landau, ‘The Bet’.

As a Hidden Gems ARC reader I received a free copy and promised an honest review. Here it is.

Rating: 5 stars (of 5).

In general: Separation or Love?

Main characters:
- Sarah (45)
A teacher of adult art courses at a community center.
- Ben (48)
Sarah’s husband for 20 years. He makes documentary films.

During a dinner to celebrate Sarah’s 45th birthday Ben tells her that he assumes that now she’s 45 years old she’ll never leave him for she’d “never find anyone else”.
Sarah is puzzled (she feels fairly happy in her marriage) and - later - angry, so she proposes a bet. A three month separation during which both are free to do whatever they want. In that time she’ll find another man.
And next morning - after good sex and a tight embrace - he leaves their home to live in his studio for a three months separation. They promised not looking for a love affair, for they love each other.

The original plot - an impulsive decision for a temporary separation while the marriage is reasonable good, perhaps a bit boring after 20 years - results in a well written novel.
The author, Orna Landau, describes how both at first enjoy being free and do what they like. But meeting new people or sex partners brings pleasure, disappointments or new insecurities and causes reconsidering their feelings about their marriage. The subject makes hot sex scenes a real possibility, but that doesn’t happen: the sex is mentioned, hardly described.
The story isn’t only original, but also beautifully constructed: deep insight in the feelings of the main characters, wonderful supporting personalities and a very nice, credible ending.
For me this book was a page turner I wanted to read without putting it aside.

The Bet: a 45-year old woman aims to prove to her husband that she is still desirable to others. For a 3-month trial separation, they would be free to do…whatever they wanted.

Of course, the very next day, when Sarah wakes up from the hang-over and the passionate love-making, she wonders if it was a good idea, especially when Ben starts packing right away. Yeah, never make bets when drunk. Can a perfectly good marriage be broken? It’s only for 3 months.

Throughout the story, Sarah and Ben suffer a mixture of angst, withdrawals, and excitement. The eagerness to fly and be free clashes with the guilt and constant doubts plaguing their minds. What happens when sex gets in the mix? Then it becomes an internal war between the angel and the devil. Who will win in the end?

Lovely and well-written. I was intrigued by the bet and thought it was such a daring idea. And I agreed with Sarah: if the two really loved each other, they would survive the 3 month. Heck, I’d enjoy the peace and quiet, too! Watching Sarah sort through the online dating dilemma was a riot. The two just get wracked with guilt that it’s hard for either of them to enjoy this little experiment. They constantly obsess and quibble, practically repeating the same whiny notions over and over again. That tends to get annoying after a while.

Overall, this was a good read.

If you are sick, have to stay in bed and this book is the only one you can reach from your nightstand: read it.
It's no brainfood, easy to read, but I must admit that I forgot about it several days later.

Which is kind of sad, because it delivers an important message: Don't take your spouse for granted!

Excellent book. Fun, sexy, anyone in a relationship can empathize with the characters. My husband and I enjoyed the reading and we seriously considered to bet

The Bet was a page turner for me. A unique storyline woven in well-written prose, this book kept me intrigued.

I will definitely read more from this author.
