Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name. Please see:Vincent Price
Vincent Leonard Price Jr. was an American actor best known for his performances in horror films, although his career spanned other genres, including film noir, drama, mystery, thriller, and comedy. He appeared on stage, television, and radio, and in more than 100 films. He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for motion pictures, and one for television.
He was an art collector, and arts consultant, with a degree in art history, and he lectured and wrote books on the subject. The Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College is named in his honor. He was also a noted gourmet cook.
Once you get past the Hitler story in the beginning, Price's knowledge on demonology and witch hunts is impressive. It's easy to see why he was so formidable in Hollywood's heyday. Equally surprising is how this narrative style won't work today.
Re-listening to an old Halloween favorite thanks to YouTube. Now that I'm older, some parts sounded like poetic gibberish to me. But then a quick google search backs up the evidence of it. Freaky history.
While the script goes too deep into the "magic and spirits are real" at times, it's being read by the campy and witty Mr. Price. And the screechy witch reenactments were welcome additions. Even if they contrast the actual history and practices being spoken, I kinda needed it. Sometimes the subject matter gets pretty dark and gruesome.
Keep an open mind, and it's an informative and fun album. The best kind to me.
Cool if true. Great stories. Real nostalgia shot. Also intensely progressive for its time. An attempt at subverting popular notions of witchcraft. 3.5 if it existed.
