Dax has thwarted the Tharan’s attack on East Landly, but the kingdom is in turmoil. Dax can take the throne to save the kingdom and redeem the right to rule which was taken from him years ago. The answer is obvious, yet the complications—and dangers—are many. Dax’s destiny and the fates of two kingdoms hang in the balance in the exciting conclusion to the books, King’s Exile and King’s Dragon.
I thought this was a good series. (Spoiler alert!) Although the final conflict seemed to end abruptly, I felt that it was more realistic than the way most books like these end. The emperor overplayed his hand and it cost him dearly. I look forward to seeing if Mr. Culberson takes this series any further and what direction he goes if he chooses to.
I loved the conclusion to this story. It was nice to get a little info about what happened after everything concluded. I was surprised about the Kotkel and would love to have more information about them.
In a word? Disappointing. There was so much potential for where this story could have gone but instead it turned into a long drawn-out romance novel. The first two-thirds of the story was mostly filler dealing with Dax's inevitable rise to rule and what that entailed. I kept waiting for something substantive to happen. Certainly there were opportunities to add to the plot, but the author had his predictable happy ending in mind and headed straight for it. Kudos to him for neatly tying up every single loose end, but did he need to do that? It might have been better to put some of that effort into adding a few twists and unexpected turns.
There were more errors in this book as well - most the result of repeated or missing words. Examples: - 'he would be able to able to sooth his throat' - 'Will that will be enough' The author also appears to have difficulty with the use of 'women' versus 'woman' when writing about a single person. Another round of proofreading - by someone other than the author- might have caught most errors.
As a whole, this was a decent first series if you don't mind fairytale endings.
