Excellent book, loved the characters, loved the story, fantastic writing!
*Full Review posted on Words I Write Crazy on July 18th*
This was a fantastic read! Action, romance, mystery, and heart-wrenching scenes and memories and what the characters have gone through, painful pasts with loss, and painful presents with the echoes of that loss, and how it affects them through the novel!
You'd think that that these characters would've clashed, what with the independence, and the protectiveness, and you'd be right! Added to that is the stress of the investigation, the threats on her life, the exotic locations (to non-Floridians?) and a strong physical attraction, and this novel just pops with life!
Most characters have flaws, aren't perfect. In Beneath the Surface, Brooke has a physical reminder of her past, of her parents dying from the earthquake, because it also took her leg, and she has a prosthetic. And since I've never had that kind of injury (the most I've had trouble in getting around is when I broke my leg) the subtle ways of how Brooke had to deal with hers in her day to day life, well, it was just excellently written in!
All in all, Beneath the Surface was an excellent book snapping with tension and heat, and the writing was absolutely wonderful! Beneath the Surface is a must read!
I was sucked into this book immediately. I absolutely love romantic suspense and this book definitely falls into that category. From the word go, the book starts off with a bang. Literally.
Brooke is in Florida on a vacation/medical trip to see her friend Linda and to get a new prosthesis. Her would is turned upside down for a second time in her life when she witnesses her friend's boat explode with Linda and her boyfriend. First believing that it was some freak accident, she is in shock to find out that it was rigged to explode. Who would want her friends dead? The pieces all start to come together when hunky cop, Garrett sets his stubborn sights on protecting her from imminent danger. But the ultimate danger is the possibility of losing her heart to this caring, protective man.
Garrett knows instinctively that Brooke's friends were targeted for what they saw at the bottom of the ocean: a box big enough to hold a body with what looked like flame red hair sticking out. Problem is the box can't be found. Garrett decides to enlist Brooke's help with retrieving the box which also enables him to keep a very close eye on her. She plays on every one of his protective instincts and it's not just because she is missing half of her leg, something about this woman calls to him. He hasn't felt this way towards another woman since his fiance. After a few other incidences, Garrett knows he will do anything to protect the woman who has captured his heart.
Explosions, mystery, suspense, action, romance, steamy encounters, obsticles. Pick any of these and it will describe an aspect of this book. I started this book in the morning and stayed up late that night to finish it it was that engrossing. The storyline was absolutely different than anything else I have read. And the ending had me literally bugging my eyes. I mean, who would of thought to do that????? Does that get your attention now? Good. Go get this book. I guarantee you will have a new favorite author when you are done.
Brooke, our heroine, who is an underwater archeologist, is in sunny Florida on a dual purpose. She is visiting friends and anxious to keep her appointment with a renowned surgeon who specializes in artificial skin for prosthetics. Brook lost part of her leg in a terrible earthquake, a triple tragedy as that disaster also took the lives of her parents. The need to be strong and self sufficient, to not dwell on her limitations, governs all of her decisions now, even those of her heart. The setting is beautiful but her vacation comes to an abrupt halt when their boat explodes and her friends get hurt. Was it an unfortunate accident? Local police officer, Garrett, doesn't think so. Garrett is sure Brooke and her friends were targeted for what they saw at the bottom of the ocean: a box big enough to hold a body with what looks like red hair caught at the seam. Garrett wants to find that box. Brooke's underwater experience could help locate it, so they work together. Sparks fly between these two because Garrett wants to protect Brooke from harm and she is fiercely determined to not be safeguarded; sparks that ignite into romantic heat between them.
A disturbing villain, bombs, bodies, drugs, and clever twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very end. Put this book on your 'must read' list but don't wait too long. I’m looking forward to Joya's next novel. You will too, once you finish Beneath the Surface.
"A fast paced tale of overcoming physical and emotional obstacles that will tear at your heart as the heroine finds the courage to go on with her life and love again. Tropical settings, a modern day disturbing villain, and likeable characters will keep you reading." -- Jody E. Lebel, Author of Playing Dead
Overall Thoughts: This was a very unpredictable story with thrilling twists!
Beneath the Surface is about a young woman named Brooke Richards who is an underwater archaeologist. The thing is: She doesn't go underwater anymore. Why? Two years ago, both her parents died in an earthquake, which severed her left leg in half causing her to have a prosthetic for the rest of her life.
The story begins with two of Brooke's best friends severely injured when their boat explodes right when they were so close to finding a mysterious box in the ocean. Then enters Detective Garrett Ciavello! It becomes his job and personal mission to find out what's inside the box and who tried to harm the closest people to finding that out. But it seems to become rather difficult for him to concentrate on the task at hand when he's constantly fearing for Brooke's life, which he's determined to protect...
What I liked about this book: I could totally see everything in this book as if it were happening right in front of me. It was very visual.
Also, I really liked how protective Garrett was of Brooke even in the beginning when he didn't know her that much. It was so sweet!
What I disliked about this book: I found the plot to lag a little at times, not too much though.
A building love, people out to destroy her, his desire to protect her and still do his job, adventure, romance and suspense. All in a neat little package between a front and back cover. Brooke is a strong character that has learned over time that you need nobody but yourself to make it. Garrett is a soft hearted cop who wants to make sure Brooke stays alive while they crack the case.
This book leaves you hungry for more but doesn't disappoint either. Filled with a mixture of romance, action, drama, and more you will be eagerly turning each page as you follow the journey from the explosion of Brooke's friends boat to the love neither can deny to the last page.
I highly recommend this book. It was an easy read and enjoyable.
I especially enjoyed this book, it was set in south Florida and having lived in the area for 15 years it was familiar to me. Ms. Fields did an excellent job handling Brooke's handicap and especially the way it seemed to make no difference at all to Garrett. I was fascinated by Brooke's expertise in underwater archaeology, I am going to have to do some more research on that particular field, it seems very interesting! Last but not least Garrett is absolutely yummy! Don't start this book unless you plan on staying up late! I read it all in one sitting because I was so caught up in solving the crime and spending time with Brooke and Garrett to see them find their HEA! Review copy provided by the author.
I totally enjoyed reading "Beneath the Surface" and it had my attention from the first page. Joya pens her characters very likeable in a a romantic suspense tale with twists and turns that just keeps you guessing till the end. If you like the suspenseful romance genre, then this book is for you. I look forward to Joya's next novel.

REVIEWER'S NOTE: I received a review copy of this book from the author.
When I first saw the cover of this novel, I just had to investigate. That gorgeous blue color, the couple about to kiss, the solitary diver so strategically placed -- the entire cover design was incredible eye candy! The synopsis definitely intrigued me, and, when I started reading, I was instantly hooked!
The author paints vivid word pictures, as is evident from the exciting opening paragraph of Chapter 1, in which Brooke is suddenly thrown to the deck when her friends' boat explodes.
The novel continues to propel the reader along with nearly nonstop action and edge-of-the-seat suspense, as well as a very sweet romance between Brooke Richards, underwater archaeologist, and Garrett Ciavello, police detective. Brooke feels the need to be as independent as possible, while Garrett feels the need to protect her, although he does realize her own need to feel that she can take care of herself, in spite of her handicap.
Brooke's friends, Linda and Jeff, who are graduate students, were specifically targeted in the explosion described at the beginning of the book. They had been attempting to recover a mysterious box from the ocean floor. When Detective Ciavello hears about this, he fears that this box could very well contain the remains of his cousin, Tessa, who has been missing for several months. The main suspect in her disappearance is Rico, Tessa's boyfriend, who has a criminal past.
Brooke finds herself agreeing to something she thought she'd never do again -- diving. She simply couldn't bear the thought of doing her favorite activity without her parents along with her, but now Garrett needs her help, and she knows that her underwater expertise will certainly be of use in his investigation.
Garrett finds himself getting into a new relationship, in spite of his own traumatic loss. He simply can't resist falling in love with Brooke. He not only feels attracted to her as a woman, but also as a gutsy individual who has bravely resumed her life, having become a teacher in order to inspire students in her field.
Together, they begina magical romance that will be tested not only by their own inner battles, but also by the threat now looming over Brooke's life, as she becomes involved in the search for Garrett's cousin.
In the middle of all the action, Fields never forgets such things as character development. Brooke and Garrett are very believable people. From the initial attraction, we see their relationship cautiously begin to bloom. We follow them all the way, through the suspenseful events, as they open up to each other.
The secondary characters are also very believable. I really like Linda and Jeff. They, too, are well matched, and very much in love with each other.
Stephanie Cooper, known as "Coop", is another likable character, whom I think will eventually hook up with Garrett's partner, Diego. She's fhe female deputy who is initially sent to ask Brooke questions about the explosion, and ends up befriending Brooke.
We also briefly meet Garrett's mother, Katie, who is a total delight. She and Brooke warm up to each other right away.
The villain is very well done, too; there are some genuinely scary moments toward the end of the novel, because the villain is obviously a megalomaniac. Fields also does a great job of keeping the readers guessing about this person's identity. There are several unexpected twists and turns before the reader finally finds out who has been trying to kill Brooke and her friends in order to thwart the investigation.
The setting of this novel is very much "in my backyard", so to speak, since I live in South Florida, USA. Everything I love about Florida -- the ocean, the tropical breezes and lovely scenery, which were part of the setting of this novel -- made me feel right at home!
To sum up, Joya Fields has given us a truly enjoyable read that skillfully blends romance, action, and suspense, with memorable characters and a beautiful setting. I zipped right through it, and am now thinking of going back for a more leisurely reading, because I'd like to really savor it this time. I'd like to feel those tropical breezes again, as well as immerse myself in the sweetness of a beautiful romance.

She's fighting to stay independent — he's determined to protect her no matter what...
Brooke Richards survived the earthquake that took her parents and most of her leg, but she needs time to regroup. A trip to Florida for a state-of-the-art prosthesis and to visit her best friend Linda seems ideal. But the trip turns traumatic when Brooke witnesses Linda's boat disintegrating in a fiery explosion. Police Officer Garrett Ciavello believes the blast was intentionally set to hide something Linda found on a dive. When Brooke offers her expertise in underwater archeology, Garrett accepts her help with the investigation. But since his fiancée's death years ago, Garrett has become overprotective, and as they are drawn to each other, Garrett realizes he will risk anything to keep Brooke safe.
Brooke is fiercely independent. Garrett is fiercely protective. Will they heal each other's wounds and find a killer.. .before it's too late?
What Stephanie Thinks: Ever since the accident that took most of Brooke's leg, as well as all of her trust, all of her security, away, Brooke's been cautious to take risks. Risks including anything outside of her now-smooth, now-bland life, as well as risks regarding relationships and men. Which is why when she meets sexy alpha-male police officer Garrett, she shoves the attraction away, swallows it like sour bile. She can't fall for a guy like him. She has better things to focus on.
Such as the fact that she's positive someone intentionally rigged a boat she and her best friends were on because of the mysterious metal box they had discovered in the ocean. The detectives are skeptical, but she has no other way to explain it. She's been on her haunches lately, with a sickening feeling that she's being watched, but has no proof — not yet. She needs to find that box, as well as the person who wants to keep her away from it, as soon as possible.
Garrett is more than willing to help, but of course, she pushes him away. She's strong, she's independent. She doesn't need him. Yet somehow, after a period of one week.... they fall in love? Say what. Garrett and Brooke's relationship confuses me very deeply. She isn't that vulnerable and Garrett really isn't THAT charming. But for some reason she throws all her principles away and herself onto this hot policeman. Yeah. Believable.
The dialogue and sequence of events really don't make sense to me either. I mean, they make sense logically, in terms that they flow well and are clearly portrayed, but not realistically. I'm not just talking about the blooming romance, which, might I say, has no chemistry whatsoever. I'm talking about the entire mystery as a whole. The process of finding the murderer seems very unprofessional, very lucky (as Brooke escapes murder attempts numerous times... is she really that smart, or is the villain just that dumb?) and I can't say it was intriguing at all.
I liked the storyline of brooding hero saves reluctant and heartbroken marine biologist, but was disappointed by the choppy, awkward, and highly unrealistic depiction. Fields can write a story, but not so much a story that is enjoyable. Nothing had me wanting to read more, nothing made me tingle nor induced any strong emotion in any way. It's a fairly short read (but it wasn't fast-paced for me. It dragged on a lot!) so if you'd like to give it a try, sure, but don't expect too much of it.
Stephanie Loves: "Right now, he wanted her here for himself, wanted her soft curves and firecracker personality close to him." — firecracker personality! I love that.
Radical Rating: 6 hearts-Satisfying for a first read, but I'm not going back.
Brooke Richards' life has not been easy. She survived an earthquake that took the lives of her parents and a good portion of her leg. She's done her best to recuperate from the ordeal, but hasn't quite come to terms with everything. Every now and then, she'll find herself mourning the loss of her beloved family and wishing she could go back in time to change things somehow. Deep inside, though, she knows that's just wishful thinking.
Deciding to take a trip to Florida to both visit her best friend and also see a renowned specialist who can help her in acquiring a state-of-the-art prosthesis, Brooke finds herself looking forward to what's to come. In her mind, her little vacation will give her a reprieve from the things she's been going through as of late. It'll also give her a chance to catch up with her beloved friends.
When her friends unexpectedly find a metal box on the sea floor after a routine dive one day, the trio is convinced that there's more than meets the eye to it. Determined to get to the bottom of things, they schedule a second dive. One, unfortunately, that has dire consequences. Linda and her boyfriend's boat suddenly explodes, leaving the pair severely incapacitated.
Garrett Ciavello, a police officer, that make it onto the scene, comes to the conclusion that the blast might have been rigged. Brooke, on the other hand, isn't so sure. Her friends have done nothing wrong. Why would anyone want to hurt them? Yet when an attempt own her life is made, she agrees to an unexpected dive with Garrett and a friend of his. She soon realizes he may just be right.
Someone's out to get her and her friends. There's something quite valuable down on the sea floor, but she can't quite fathom as to what it could be. The only thing anyone can deduce is that someone wants it kept secret and will do anything to silence those digging their noses into the situation at hand.
Never-the-less, her curiosity has gotten the best of her. She knows she'll need to discover what's down there if she's to rest easy later on down the line. The question is, how to do it safely without her and any one else coming to any further harm in the process?
The book hooked me in from the very first page. So much so, that I didn't put it down until I got to the very last page. Joya's style of telling a story capture's the reader's attention from the get-go and keeps the reader riveted to the intense storyline. I enjoyed Beneath The Surface very much and look forward to more of her work in the future.
I'm a huge fan of those crime drama shows like CSI: Miami and Bones. This story was sort of like a mash up of those shows with romance! Beneath the Surface is a gripping romance-suspense novel that has an explosive beginning...literally!
When underwater archeologist Brooke Richards witnesses her friends' boat blow up, she unknowingly becomes a target of a killer. Detective Garrett Ciavello's search for his missing niece leads him to a metal box found on the ocean floor by Brooke's friends prior to the explosion. Together, Brooke and Garrett must rely on each other's expertise to retrieve the box and find answers.
I absolutely enjoyed this story! It kept me engaged and guessing, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! When all was revealed, and I found out the reasons for the crime(s), my jaw dropped! I did not think it was going to head in that direction at all. All I'm going to say is beware of deranged lunatic!
Brooke and Garrett had undeniable attraction towards one another, even when they tried to resist their feelings and concentrate only on the investigation. Since Brooke lost part of her leg in an earthquake, being independent has been a huge priority for her. This doesn't go well with Garrett's strong protective nature. Although they had to work through issues, it was obvious they cared so much for each other. Her disability was not even an issue for Garrett. One of my favorite parts is when Garrett tries to get Brooke to ride on his Harley. She's hesitant because of her prosthesis, but he ends up coaxing her on the bike anyway. Very cute! I got a little sad when I reached the last chapter. I wasn't ready to leave these two. Thank God for the sweet epilogue!
Beneath the Surface is the second story that I have read from Joya Fields. Her novella, Love Delivered, is one of my favorites! Both stories showcase writing that is passionate with just enough spice all wrapped up like a small-hometown welcome hug. Her stories make you feel like you're coming home to something familiar. Even with all the mystery and suspense of Beneath the Surface, she manages to pull that comfortable hometown awareness for her readers. The scene at the family pizza place made me feel like I was part of the crowd. I'll take one of Mama Ciavello's specialties please!
Brooke Richards has come to Florida to visit her best friend and to visit a very famous Dr about getting a new prosthesis. The book start out with her friend and her husband going out on a boat and it exploding shortly after with Brooke still on the pier watching in horror. Brooke is no stranger to tragedy as her and her parents were in an earthquake in Egypt 2 years ago where her parents lost there lives trying to save her and she lost her leg. They manage to find both of her friends in the water and miraculously they are still alive.
Garrett Ciavello is a detective with the Beach Police Department. His niece had been missing for two months and with a previous report from Brooke and her friends that they had found a box on the bottom of the ocean floor with red hair floating out of it his gut is telling him its his niece.
It becomes clear that the attempt on her friends lives has something to do with the box they had found but its as yet to be recovered from the ocean. When she realizes this she joins forces with Garrett and his friend Diego to try and find it to see if it does contain his niece and to figure out who did it. But this puts her on the radar of the killer and attempts are made on her life. Garrett who has a strong sense of being the protector vows that nothing will happen to Brooke and keeps her close. Brooke whose last involvement with a man didnt end well is hesitant to start a relationship with Garrett for that reason and also her embarrassment over her missing leg. Very touching initial sex scene when she decides to let go of her fears and give into her desires.
I figured out early on who the bad guy was but his true reason for what he was doing was still a surprise at the end.
This was a good suspense story with some interesting underwater scenes. Looking forward to what's next from this author.
Underwater archaeology...something that I know nothing about and it provided some interesting twists to this story. Both Brooke and Garrett have had their share of tragedy over the last few years. But it's the tragedies/dramas in their lives which bring them together. The book starts with Brooke witnessing the explosion of her friend's boat. They are investigating a box that they discovered on the ocean floor which looked like it had human remains in it. Garrett believes those remains could be his missing cousin.
Garrett is a cop and when it becomes clear that Brooke might be in danger, he takes it upon himself to make sure she's safe. That puts them in close proximity with each other and you know what that means...this is a romance novel. Garrett is a protector and caregiver. Brooke is determined to stand on her own. They are definitely at cross purposes, but that doesn't keep the romantic sparks from flying when they are together.
There's a lot going on in this book. Brooke is dealing with the trauma of losing her parents and her leg two years ago and the break-up with her fiance just a couple months ago. Garrett is dealing with a lot of guilt over the death of his fiance and the probable death of his cousin, who's like a sister to him. In between all this is the suspense story line and trying to figure out who is out there trying to kill Brooke and her two friends. I'll admit, I didn't figure out who did it until the very end although all the signs were there. I just didn't see them. Really well woven suspense plot line.
Overall this was a fun read. It was entertaining and I learned a few things about diving that I never knew.
I received a complementary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
**A copy was provided by the author for review purposes**
My Review: What do archaeologists and police investigators have in common? A lot more than you think.
I signed up to read this book as part of a blog tour. I liked this book a lot. It was a quick read. I basically devoured it in less than a day. I was shocked that the action happened so early on in the book and wondered if the end of the book would be slow and boring. Not so. The action continued through the end of the book.
I enjoyed the main characters Brooke and Garrett. Brooke is trying to be independent and meets Garrett when a horrible accident happens with her friends. They both end up liking each other, but Brooke also has to deal with Garrett wanting to protect her and give her help. Garrett is attracted to Brooke and also senses the need to be careful and not over do with Brooke. I also liked that the author didn’t have a big “fight” near break-up as is usually touted in this type of book. There were some tense moments between the romantic couple, but didn’t follow the usual path.
I enjoyed the small look at underwater archaeology work and how it intertwined with the similarities of police investigators. The description of the underwaters and diving was very well done. I also liked all of the couples portrayed in the book.
This was a very well written romantic suspense. There is plenty of romance and plenty of suspense.
underwater archeologist, but a teacher in her “real” life (the one that pays the bills). She and her parents spent vacations scuba diving in various locations, until the earthquake took everything from her. Since that day two years ago, she hasn’t been on a dive. But now she may be the only one who can solve the case… and maybe find love; if she is willing to let someone take care of her.
A sweet love story. This story has scary parts, tension, romance, the requisite noble parting, and a happy ending. However, it also has a couple murders, some poisonings, a kidnapping, a psychopath, a clown, an actor, (just kidding about the clown, wanted to see if you were paying attention), and lots of hot law enforcement types.
I love a good love story… and this was a good love story. The story was intriguing, moved at a good place (fast enough, but not too fast), the characters were relatable and likeable, and there was lots of love making, steamy sex, and making out.
I give this story 4 out of 5 clouds and a typical romance chili pepper rating…. I’d give it a 3. A good read.
This product or book may have been distributed for review; this in no way affects my opinions or reviews.
Joya Fields can write a story, but I would have preferred more mystery and less sex. The physical attraction was so strong right from the first meeting of main characters of Brooke and Garrett that it rather overshadowed the rest of the story. Brooke who lost part of one leg also lost her parents in an earthquake. She is fiercely independent and she meets cop Garrett who is determined to protect her. She and her 2 friends were diving when they discovered a box with what appears to be red hair streaming out of it. Garrett is afraid it's his missing cousin. A storm moved the box and the book is about trying to find the box and remain alive while the murderer tries to kill them. The escapes were so numerous, I found it not believable. I give it 3 stars because the writing talent is there. Perhaps the next book will be better. I won this copy but was not required to give a review.
Need a suspenseful, action packed story filled with emotion? Beneath the Surface offers that and so much more. The characters, Brooke and Garrett, have seen a lot of loss and heartache in their life. A cruel twist of fate brings them together, but there is so much they have to overcome to be together. Their own fears, plus stay ahead of a killer.
I love the way Brooke and Garrett are portrayed. They are easy to relate to, which makes them real and likable. The pacing is great, so many twists and turns in the plot and it kept me going. The suspense is heart-stopping and overall this story is great! Joya Fields weaves a tale of intrigue that romantic suspense readers can enjoy. Add this one to your to be read pile today!
3.5 RATING- The writing of this romantic suspense story was good and I liked both characters. The heroine wore a prosthetic leg, right or wrong, I love disabled characters. The hero was protective and capable. The villain needed some work. He was a complete joke. He tried to kill certain people over and over again. The steam factor was low compared to the books I normally read but about what I expected from a title in this genre.
I know several others have rated this book much higher but for me, it was just okay. Nothing specific to complain about, maybe I wasn't in the mood for romantic suspense when I read it. A solid read but just missing something.
"Beneath the Surface" is a real page turner. The characters are well-drawn - very realistic and compelling. I absolutely loved Brooke and rooted for her every step of the way. And who wouldn't adore a man like Garrett? Yum! I also really enjoyed Linda and Jeff - it's refreshing to be so invested in supporting characters. I found myself second guessing the villain's identity every step of the way - that aspect was also really well done!
If you like mystery and suspense with a lovely romance then this is the book for you!
Garrett needs to protect; Brooke needs to be independent. When missing family members, a mystery box at the bottom of the ocean, and multiple murder attempts bring them together, their immediate attraction and sizzling chemistry demands that they find a compromise. Likeable characters, mystery and suspense, and an all around fun read...oh, and it made me incredibly hungry for pizza! Recommend!
BENEATH THE SURFACE starts with a bang and the pace doesn't let up until the very last page. Heart-warming characters combined with an evil villain who makes your skin crawl add to the mix. Don't plan to be doing much work the day after you pick this book up because you won't be getting any sleep until you're done!
This romantic mystery is an enjoyable read for those who don't love the over-the-top, sappy romance novels. I even think Brooke, the main character, is too independent to ever be involved in such a book! It has just the right amount love scenes, enough mystery to make you want to get to the next chapter, and there are even explosions and murder! Quick read, and easy to follow.
I received this book as a free first read. It was exciting from the first paragraph. A very fast read. While I figured out "who done it" half way through, the why was a big surprise. Highly recommend.
Great book, full of action, adventure and drama all rolled up in one. Joya Fields knows how to write a great story. buy the book you won't be disappointed. Looking forward to another great read
I liked the story and the ending, but for some reason that I have yet to figure out, I wasn’t drawn to it. It wasn’t a constant read for me. Often, I found myself re-reading passages. And, like many other book choices, I didn’t think about it when I wasn’t reading it.
I like this story. There are unusual elements that make it a little more interesting than that standard Rom-Sus. For one, there are two important characters in the book that are amputees and are dealing and thriving with their different abilities.
For another, the love story is pretty subtle but present in any case. Third, the story involves an underwater archaeologist, and how often do you get to say - or write that?
In any case, I was able to figure out the identity of the bad guy, probably before I was supposed to. It didn't really affect my enjoyment of the book, though.
