Rolson McKane #2

The Devil Came Calling

Rate this book
While trying to put his life back together in Savannah, GA, former cop Rolson McKane discovers that more than his past is coming back to haunt him. Turns out, his ex-wife might have angered some very dangerous and unusually ruthless people, and it’s now up to Rolson to clear her debts.

To make matters worse, the man sent to collect is hardly a man at all, and this devious figure isn’t interested in money. He wants to torment Rolson before killing him, and the only way to negotiate with a man like that, Rolson figures, is to fight fire with fire.

What results is a deadly game of cat-and-mouse that winds its way through the criminal underground of the Golden Isles, and it becomes clear fairly early on that only one of them will be left standing when the smoke clears.

Braddy possesses a nice turn of phrase and uses that skill adroitly to craft an intriguing, highly readable second novel. While I missed Lumber Junction and Deuce, some terrific new villains are added to the Rolson McKane canon. Be sure to read Boogie House first to make sure you best understand the many demons from which Rolson is running.

I just couldn't get into this book. I read 69 pages of the 287 in the book and kept thinking that it had to get better pretty soon. But I gave up. Sorry.

I'm enjoying this series and following Rolson's hot mess of a life, and I love Savannah and I like to read a story set somewhere I know well sometimes.
Rolson has left the drinking back in Lumber Junction, and is really trying to put some space between his life there and his new life in Savannah, including leaving behind any friends he had there and starting fresh. He's going to meetings, working the program, shockingly working at a bar? Without the drinking, this story is lacking the supernatural side of things, no more late night wanderings and talking to ghosts, but Rolson still finds himself in plenty of trouble, PLENTY of trouble. There is a little visit to the other side, and a little boost from that darkness, but I don't want to say too much and add any spoilers.

A dark and suspenseful novel based in the haunted streets of Savannah. If you are a fan of HBO's True Detective, then this is a good pick for you. I brought this to the beach with me and could not put it down. I suggest starting with the first book in the series, Boogie House, because the story and characters will make more sense. They are both excellent choices for people who enjoy mysteries and character-driven stories. Can't wait to check out the third book in the series!!

An AWESOME, AWESOME READ!!

The Devil Cane Calling was a can't put down read!! Rolson McKane seems to be a soul, caught up in the trouble of many others. From his missing wife, showing up, to the many others showing up, to cause more grief. These souls make a big impact on Rolson, and many deaths in the making.
