The Chamorro: A History and Ethnography of the Mariana Islands

Rate this book
In November 1899 Georg Fritz arrived on Saipan and assumed his duties as District Officer of the newly-acquired German Mariana Islands. Fritz took a keen interest in local history and authored numerous articles on the subject including "The Chamorro: A History and Ethnography of the Mariana Islands." Although obviously colored by Fritz's late nineteenth century German perspective, "The Chamorro" is rich in the details of everyday life. It provides the reader with a basic picture of what contemporary Chamorros consider to be their traditional customs at a time when the islands' resources were intact and historic patterns of subsistence still in operation.
