A book about Scotland drawn from hundreds, if not thousands, of stories. From the oral traditions of the Scots, Gaelic and Norse speakers of the pat, it presents a new picture of who the Scottish are and where they come from. The stories are hilarious, tragic, heroic or frightening.
An enjoyable and informative wee book, exploring Scotland's landscape and discovering its mythology on the way. I was especially impressed by the author's suggestion that historians and archeologists are missing a trick by not viewing Highland clan society as a fairly recent, and entirely investigable, remnant of Celtic culture. He also stressed that, contrary to what some believe, Scotland's mythology, art and culture did not grow from a colonial settlement but were in fact indigenous. A good read.
A fantastic book I picked up from a local bookshop. Puts myths in context and actually locates their origins, so you can piece together the folkloric fabric of this country. A great reference!
