This amusing short collection came my way a few months ago. Stories in Parallel Realities are brief, and all centred around The Village. The key to the stories is in the subtitle: The Mundane Reimagined. Looking at the lives of office workers through a satirical lens, author JC translates the everyday happenings of an office into something a bit wilder, a bit darker. This satirical voice is maintained consistently throughout the collection, although some stories are a bit more predictable than others.

A perfect book to have stashed in the loo (as the author suggests in the description), my only caveat about Parallel Realities is this: don't read it through from cover to cover in one go, or the comedy may wear a bit thin. I'd also suggest the collection is perfect for reading a story at a time on the phone, while hanging on to the overhead strap with one hand and fending off the crush of commuting bodies in the train car with one's knee: the tone fits that reality perfectly.

Four stars to an amusing look at modern office and city life. By the way, reading it made me very glad I'm retired now!

Parallel Realities is a fun but intense read. It’s entertaining to the max for such a small book! J.C. is a master at building suspense! About halfway through the book I was trying to figure out what he was explaining in such imaginative detail and more times than not I couldn’t quite place it!

The writing is superb. Each story is paced just right. I was genuinely surprised at the sheer amount of stuff that J.C. is able to put into such small stories. It’s a bit dark and reads like a comic. Now, the writing isn’t comic like. Nor is the format. It’s the wording. It’s the description. Everything is intense and has this urgent feeling.

I enjoyed reading it and will be keeping an eye on this author!

In “They Hunger,” Lucas battles an insatiable hunger and stalks the night in hunt of prey. “As with Valhalla, Shangri-la and Elysium, had they found the pinnacle of their pitiful culture?” (5)

“Fight or Flight” is a death match between a warrior woman and a despicable beast.

This is a set of short and simple stories, ones that leave you with wonder and intrigue. The reader will get a kick on the irony and get a chuckle. Like Tales from the Crypt, it’s got horror and comedy. I especially liked the one describing this gruesome abdominal torture, concluding with the man just needing to eat more fiber. =D

Well-versed and enjoyable!

The Village - where villains and liars abound. Where an artifact spews golden brown liquid and steam. Where a man named Gary, a loner, sits in the dark awaiting others to summon him. They always disappoint for they only talk in riddles. This is the Village. Read and learn some tricks. Learn from others’ mistakes. Learn how to live with others - and how to survive . . . the office. Fun read.
