“I never do anything heroic or stupid unless I’m under someone else’s control,” I said. “I’d be a lot happier if everyone would just leave me alone to eat pizza and watch television, but you people seem to constantly need saving, so here I am.”
“Don’t mistake me for a friend because I sometimes choose to be friendly,” said the Luidaeg. “Don’t pretend you have some sort of control over what I do. I’m Firstborn. That means something. Even here, even now, in this washed-out mockery of Faerie, that means something. If you forget again, I’ll have to leave you with something to remember me by. So please, Arden. Because I loved your father, in my own way, in my own time, don’t make me remind you.”

Faeries are real. Magic is real. My tendency to greet dangerous situations by plunging in headfirst and seeing how long it takes to get myself covered head to toe in blood is also real.
I live an interesting life.
October Daye is not good at playing political games. She’s more of a find-the-bad-guy-while-staying-alive kind of gal. But because trouble seems to follow Toby wherever she goes, she’s pulled into another political nightmare seeing as she was the one that returned from the Kingdom of Silences with a cure for elf-shot.
Because the cure could change the balance of Faerie, the High King and Queen, together with Queen Windermere in the Mists have called for a convocation of monarchs, to decide whether the cure will be used or banned.
As always danger follows Toby, so when the first dead body appears, and because Toby is a knight errant and hero of the realm, it falls to her to find the killer before another person is murdered. It doesn’t help that Toby is the only changeling in attendance, and therefor the person the pureblood fae suspect and treat with hostility.
Together with her allies and loved ones, Toby has to find the killer before it’s too late, and the cure for elf-shot may be lost forever, and the victims would not be saved.
If I had to become a little less human to hold on to my humanity, then there was no question of what I needed to do.
I just had to be strong enough to do it.
Toby was just as wonderful as always. I love how she’s always fighting for those she loves, for those weaker. If someone is doing something wrong, whether it was her fight to begin with, she wades right in, the hero to the rescue :-D It really is amazing how far she has come since the first book, how much stronger she has grown. One thing I’m so amazed by is Toby’s ability to survive every horrible and painful attack which would have killed most people.
As with any October Daye book there were some very nerve-wrecking moments, where I panicked that one of my favorite characters would die, luckily they always manage to pull through.
Sometimes I think the true power of what I inherited from my mother is the ability to keep running, no matter how badly it hurts.
I really enjoyed the plot of this book, and it’s always so sad and infuriating to see how the pureboods treat the changelings and each other. I loved that we got to meet the kings/representatives of the other kingdoms. So many secrets has been revealed so far, like which First Born Fae Toby descends from, what Fae her mother really is and why Simon turned her into a fish. But still we have barely scraped the surface of all the secrets this world holds and what role Toby still has to play.
“When you decide it’s time to make enemies, you don’t fuck around,” said the Luidaeg. “I’ve always respected that about you.”
It was so wonderful spending time again with the all the fabulous characters in this world. I love that the Luidaeg, one of my favorite characters, played such a big role in this book. She was fantastic, sarcastic and scary :-D I love her! Ooh, and I loved that we got to finally see the night-haunts at work, how they eat their victims. It was very fascinating! I also loved Dianda in this book, she is so violent, it’s awesome ;-) I did miss May and Raj, who we only saw briefly in the beginning of the book, and I hope they appear more in the next book.
Me, the changeling street rat, and him, the handsome Cait Sidhe monarch. Maybe it shouldn’t have worked, but it did, and it had become one of the rocks I put my trust in. The sun rose; the tide turned; Tybalt loved me.
The romance between Toby and Tybalt was as awesome as always. They had such a rocky start, but their relationship has grown so strong, and I just love them together! I really can’t wait for their wedding.
Once again Seanan McGuire has written an incredible addition to one of my favorite series’. With every book I fall deeper in love with these amazing characters and this brutal but beautiful world. This series just continues in strength, and I can’t wait to read the next book. Highly recommended to anyone who loves Urban fantasy, great world-building, a detailed and intriguing plot and phenomenal characters.

The word for humans as old as Walther is “dead.”
“How the hell am I in trouble when Toby’s not even here?”

"Somebody remind me again why we're doing this and why I'm not drowning them both in the bathtub."Re-read: February 2019
"Drowning Quentin would be an act of treason against the Westlands, and you'd probably be executed. Also, you'd miss him."
"Drowning Raj would be an act of treason against the Court of Dreaming Cats, you'd miss him, AND Tybalt would look all sad and noble right before he put you through the wall."
Can we just appreciate how spot on humor in this book is? I love the way Toby's family is slowly growing and their dynamics is just great.
"I'm not plotting sedition. Much."
"Maybe this is me being out of touch with the modern realities of life in Faerie, but last time I checked, you couldn't be a little bit plotting sedition. It's like being a little bit pregnant. Sure, you think it'll be fine, but next thing you know, it's all diapers and daggers and who's your monarch."

“I never do anything heroic or stupid unless I’m under someone else’s control,” I said. “I’d be a lot happier if everyone would just leave me alone to eat pizza and watch television, but you people seem to constantly need saving, so here I am.”
“She may be a nexus for chaos and disorder, but she’s not a political genius. She can barely dress herself half the time.”
“Hope can be cruel, but giving up is worse”
