Yesterday, Astrid was a regular sixteen-year-old junior at an elite prep school in a sleepy California town whose biggest problem was trying to figure out how to get hottie Chad Olson to notice her.

But today, after an otherworldly meteorite nearly destroys her house, she discovers a shape-shifting bounty hunter is hot on her trail.

Her only hope of survival is to team up Jax, the arrogant handyman who works for her uncle. Lucky for Astrid, Jax turns out to be more than she bargained for.

In her quest to stay alive, Astrid learns the dark truth about her past and how she fits into an ancient alien prophecy about the future of the entire planet.

Well, that was different

Bought this thinking that the premise was interesting, yet it read like YA - and I don’t get on with YA.

The characters were okay - although I loved Tom! 🥰 - and these college students acted like high schoolers for the most part. The action was in dribs and drabs, and because of the flat characterisations, I didn’t have any real emotional connection to the characters. However, the overarching plot point of the Lost Sister was intriguing, so I’ll most likely pick up the second book to see what happens.

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The cover is gorgeous--a big plus for me! I think the book could do with a bit more polishing though. There are some grammar and typographical errors along with some formatting issues, but overall, that didn't deter too much from the plot.

Sixteen-year-old Astrid has moved over 10 times in her life. Now she and her uncle are settled in sunny California. She has a best friend named Ruby, and is dying to be noticed by her crush, Chad Olson. While sneaking out of the house one night with Ruby and her sister Phoebe, the three girls see a meteor crash somewhere near Astrid's house. Concerned, Astrid turns around to find out what happened only to find the place swarmed by people in suits and her uncle carrying a dead body. Freaked out, Astrid and Ruby escape, and Astrid returns home, no one the wiser that she even snuck out of the house.

Over the course of the next couple days, what Astrid thought was just strange genes (the ability to run fast, heal quickly, etc) is more than just that. The life she led with her uncle is a lie because he's been hiding something from her ever since she was a little girl, and when Astrid learns what is it, it turns her entire world upside down.

Possible spoilers. Read at your own risk.

I am really over teenagers dying to speak to their crushes. It's the one thing I can't stand about a lot of YA contemporary novels. I wasn't sure I would like this book until well towards half-way through, especially when Astrid finally discovered she's a princess, one of the Lost Seven Sisters of the stars. I like how the author entwined a little bit of mythology into Astrid's genealogy.

It was obvious from the beginning that Astrid was someone special, but you don't really know much. Giving her the special abilities was just a big clue and I wondered if the reader could have been left guessing a bit more if the author didn't give away those vital clues.

I would be interested to read the rest of the series, but as I said before, it could do with some professional polishing in certain areas.

Unveiled: The Dark Skies Trilogy Book One was a fast paced, quick read that had no problem keeping my attention.
Astrid is your average teenage girl that is realizing that she may not be quite so average.

Spoilers beyond this point.

Quick healing, super endurance and stamina; questions are piling up and her guardian seems to be right in the middle of it.

While sneaking out one night to catch a movie with her friends, a meteorite comes crashing down towards her house, narrowly missing it. They go to check it out and end up seeing her Uncle Conrad holding what looks to be a body. They scramble out of there, and trying not to get into trouble, keep quiet about the whole thing.
description
Terrifying dreams, strange zombie like creatures, an annoying handyman and an intense crush are just a few of the things occupying her thoughts in the days following the meteorite crash. People seem to not be who they say they are, and she keeps getting attacked.

Soon everything comes out, her uncle is gone and Jax-the annoying handyman-is her only hope while fighting off aliens that are trying to kill her before she's able to fulfill her destiny.

This story was entertaining and I can't wait to read the second book!

What is with me and cliffhangers lately, though??

Literally me when I turned to the last page.

I could NOT believe it ended there. I need book two, asap.

- really unique concept,
- can't wait to learn more about
- a bit slow at the beginning but picked up soon after
- nothing is revealed until halfway through, could be frustrating for other readers
- I was fine with it though, little clues are given along the way leading up to the reveal
- I liked how all the clues and events came together in the end and were all linked to why everything was happening to Astrid
- Astrid and Jax well-developed
- want to know more about Jax's past in the sequel
- Ruby and Chad less developed,
- writing was good

Full review to come.

A truly good book!

Wow. I'm not an author so I can't put into words how great I think this book is. I can say that the story about who Astrid is and where she's from is different from others I've read. I like the way the author writes. Astrid is funny. She has her faults but is no pushover. This was truly a good book and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next one.

What a rush....

This is an amazing read. What starts as an ordinary girl with the usual angsts soon turns into an intergalactic adventure....all the while still in earth. Wonderfully written with amazing characters and fascinating journey....that really leaves you looking forward to the next installment.

Intriguing world building

This is an interesting YA novel. The characters act more like high schoolers than college-aged, but it doesn't take away from the plot.

4.897 stars!

Okay, I couldn't give it five stars because there were some noticeable grammar / spelling mistakes, but though obvious, they didn't detract from the overall writing - which was brilliant. I think if this had been a different, less interesting story, the book still would have been good just because of the writing. It's engaging, but easy to read, and you really feel like you know Astrid. Not because she's rambling about dumb junk, but because she's reacting to her environment. The perfect, smooth combination of inner thoughts and what she's doing made the story mive along quickly. I never felt like it was dragging, which was partially because we started off with innocent hijinx followed by crazy alien stuff and cue mystery, boys, and BFFs. I mean, it was perfect. So much better than I would have anticipated, and I just want tobtell you now, I don't read a lot of alien stuff. A little, but I'm picky.

So, characters. Uncle Conrad was bomb. I picture him as wildly attractive in that comando sort of way, while being all Universal Soldier kindhearted and protective. He wasn't over the top, or unrealistic, even if he did weird things. And for a character we actually don't see all that much of, he's pretty engaging.

Jax is sly like a fox, and I'll admit, I likex him in the end, despite resisting. He's not immediately likable which makes him *more* likable in the end. He's more real that way for not being just one hundred percent love interest (maybe he isn't at all!). Chad, likewise, was a surprise. Not stuck just in the jock Opposite Love Interest mode, he got some personality along the way. And Ruby, so much more valid than I gave her credit for. You blow those stereotypes out of the water!

And of course, I loved the history, the lore. Hiw we weren't forcefed anything. How we got pieces that slowly led to a bigger picture. And I like that the aliens weren't just human copies, you know? They were kinda weird looking, but people still thought they were beautiful (well, some anyway lol). That gave it a nice diversity that I really liked.

I would honestly recommend this across the board. It's really well written and deserves more ratings than this.

Can't wait for book 2!
