Secrets and Lies was a very good LIS. I liked the suspense, the characters, and the action. The beginning scene was gripping and got me right into the story. I loved the K-9s in the book and even the puppy -- so cute!

I feel like maybe I would have loved the book more had I read all the previous books, but then again I did still really like it. The writing was good and I liked the ending.

All in all, Secrets and Lies was entertaining and I recommend it!

Ariel Martins is attacked in her school while waiting to attend a meeting with a brother of a student that is failing summer school. Ariel is a widowed teacher and has moved from Las Vegas and her only concern is the daughter she is carrying. Her student's brother, Rookie K-9 officer Tristan McKeller, and his partner Jesse help her to escape from a window so to thank him she agrees to tutor his sister. Tristan won't rest until he finds out who is after her, but Ariel doesn't want him digging into her past. The only person who would want her and her child dead is her husband and he's dead; isn't he? With their life in jeopardy, she'll have to trust Tristan with her secrets if she wants to get that fresh start she's been dreaming of or move again. What will she want more?

I enjoy this author and the series she writes about highly trained police dogs and their handlers. This one is set in Arizona in a small town with a dog training facility which is beleaguered. The town could benefit from security cameras but they don't seem to be on anyone's agenda. As this is part of a linked series, with books written by other authors following various characters, the town is well populated by recurring characters in each book. This is a nice contrast to all the romances with a stone-cold formula of no more than six characters and one or no sub-plots.

I am taking off a star for all the padding at the start. The setup is introducing the two main personalities as a lady, who is divorced and pregnant, finds a prowler and a police officer arrives to search around the outside of the premises. The lady thinks about her life past and present to start with; and when the officer arrives, instead of concentrating on his dog - a Golden Lab - and search, he thinks about his own life past and present. Then the two get together and think about what they know of each other. Then they discuss their lives to present. I did not enjoy being told the same things three times over per person. After this the story moves ahead much more smoothly. The suspense aspect is intelligently thought out and crime readers will have fun trying to outguess the plot.

The dogs are always stars of the show but we meet some really genuine people through these books and can feel that we get to know the town quite well. This is an inspirational romance so no strong language, and scenes are suitable for teen readers.

I downloaded an ARC from Net Galley and this is an unbiased review.

I'm squealing and jumping up an down with my fist raised in armchair sleuth triumph because I figured something out with the over-arcing suspense. Phew -- okay, let me backtrack a bit. Secrets and Lies is book 5 in the Rookie K-9 Unit continuity series. And though each book reads well as a standalone, a common suspense thread links the stories together. So I'm just asserting bragging rights over connecting the dots. :-)

Aside from that shared thread, there's another suspense plot unique to this book. A little bit hair-raising and a whole lot mystifying, Tristan has his hands full keeping Ariel safe while trying to manage his unruly teenage sister. You might say he's bombarded by the complexities of womanhood. A sweet romance blossoms between Tristan and Ariel despite the mounting obstacles in their way. Danger and intrigue persist right through to the exhilarating conclusion. Awesome read and now I'm waiting impatiently for all the lose threads to be tied up in the final book which comes out next month.

3.5 ⭐️!!
One of the best Love Inspired Suspense books I've read! Like always with the Suspense line, this book was virtually NO romance and just the same plot of the cop (in this case Tristan) having to protect the civilian (Ariel) and move them from safe house to safe house. The Suspense books aren't the best, but this one was okay! It was fun to read before bed and at the pool. Gotta love easy mindless reads. ☺️

⚠️⚠️⚠️SPOILERS AHEAD⚠️⚠️⚠️

This story had a pretty good set up with Ariel's ex-husband being a criminal and "dead" (of course Mitch turns out to be still alive and the one hunting Ariel down). Then there was a secondary crime plot happening with all the K-9 cops trying to hunt down a murderer (this had been set up in previous books in the series). Like I said, there was very little romance (and the whole books happens over a time period of like 5 days? 😂) but what little there was was okay because Tristan was cool.

Anyways everybody and everything is really forgettable, so I'm gonna write down names in case I ever care to look back at this:

Ariel (pregnant with Mitch's daughter)
Mitch (Ariel's ex-husband, presumed dead)
Tristan (K-9 cop, Mia's older brother & guardian)
Mia (annoying little twerp)
Jenny (mia's friend; annoying little twerp 2)

The whole book was Ariel being fired at again and again and again and again and (yes), AGAIN. Then when Mitch shows up in person to shoot Ariel for the last time, Tristan kills him with one shot super quick and the whole thing is over. Why wasn't the last fight a little longer? Oof. These suspense novels are just poor.

Tristan had a few cute lines and was the perfect gentleman to Ariel.

This book was
50% Ariel having to run from bullets and fire
&
50% Mia having bad grades and being annoying as HECK

Also, Tristan's K-9 cop dog Jesse was like nowhere to be found the whole book.... he was BARELY involved! 😂 which is weird, ya know, 'cause it's A K-9 UNIT BOOK 😂 !!!
🤷🏻‍♂️
There's one more suspense book that I'm going to read and then I'm done with this "suspense" line.

Shirlee McCoy is one of my favorite authors, so I went into this book with high expectations and it did not disappoint! Ariel and Tristan are perfectly paired and their relationship is so tender that I had to literally grasp my chest and go awe...

Ariel is a pregnant woman who discovered she was pregnant after she filed for divorce from her husband. Her husband, a really horrible person, demanded she get rid of the baby or he would do it for her. Even after she signed the papers releasing him from any financial rights. Now, even after his death, someone is trying to kill her. Enter Tristan, whose sister is in her class, to defend her. They bond during the course of the events, and even though it may seem like a rushed romance, it seemed to flow perfectly for me.

Also, we discover the identity of the serial killer who has been plaguing the series since book one. Unfortunately, even with the identity, they don't apprehend the suspect. And more questions arise after the identity is revealed, which I'm sure will be answered in the last book.

Best

I have read every book in the series so far, and this is the one I enjoyed the most. I like the thoughtful way the female lead approached her circumstances. In other books, characters seem to stay at one dysfunctional level until the very end, but this book shows a clear progression in a logical manner of self reflection. There isn’t a lot of angst internally in the characters or yo-yo type emotional responses. There weren’t any “too dumb to live” moments, either. Sometimes I wonder what the authors were thinking when they write multiple attempts on female lead lives then characters saying they can “take care of themselves,” or “I don’t need no help from no man.” SUUUUURRRRE you don’t…well, this book was blissfully free of that nonsense. The female logically works through her issues, but there is a great deal of action with believable investigative work and YES!!! THE MYSTERY of who killed the officers is finally revealed!

This is a recreational read but kept my attention until the end. Good workout or beach book.

Loved this installment to the Rookie K-9 Unit series. As you can see I finished it in one day. I had a feeling I knew who their murderer was but now I know for sure. If you want to know I would advise you to read this book.
I was hoping Tristan’s story would be a fun read and it proved to be just that. It was fast-paced and action-packed.
Can’t say anything else without giving away the rest of the story. I will say it was the best in the series so far and I will leave it at that.
Warning there are a few grammatical errors but they don’t distract you from the story. Somebody didn’t proofread the final product before it went to print and I don’t believe it was McCoy. She doesn’t make these kinds of mistakes.

Secrets and Lies is the 5th book in the Rookie K-9 Unit Series. I need to go back and read the rest in this series so I can fill in the missing pieces. I can tell I am going to like the other books in this series just as well.
In Secrets and Lies we meet K-9 officer Tristan who is not only an officer but also the only guardian to his teenage sister- Mia. When Mia's teacher Ariel gets attacked at her school, he takes the role of keeping her safe. Sparks fly between the two. The Danger is closing in on them, can Tristan and his partner Jesse keep Mia, Ariel and her baby safe.

If you like a good mystery with twist and turns and some romance that is very sweet. Then look into reading some love inspired suspense books.

OMG!

OMG! This one was a heartbreaker at times. I was glad to know that my instincts about one of the characters was dead on. Now I have to read the next book so that I know how it all ends.

Why do authors insist on ruining a good thing by having marriage proposal... particularly in less then a month of knowing each other. Come on!

It was decent....until it wasn't.

Ariel has returned home a widow and pregnant with a little girl. When a man tries to kill her in her classroom she turns to the uncle of one of her students, Tristan. He's an officer with the K-9 unit. His team is working a case that involved the death of one of their own. Does Ariel's case tie in or are all of these incidents random? Tristan vows to protect Ariel while finding out the reason for all of the attempts on her life.

This was a very fast-paced story. The author did a great job of creating tension and suspense, while still having a romance simmering in the plot. The characters were authentic and I was able to relate to them. The story is part of a series and I realized I had missed some pieces by not reading the other books, but it didn't detract from the story or cause me to dislike the book. Overall, this was a great story that I enjoyed and I plan to read more books by this author.

I received this book free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This book started out really good. Ariel is attacked and there is an immediate sense of danger. The suspense part of the book was actually pretty good though a bit predictable where Ariel is concerned. There is a second mystery within the story that felt weird to me. I am not sure if there are other books in this series (though none are listed at the front of the book under this series. Maybe it was connected to another one of her K-9 unit series). There was a whole lot of information handed to the reader about murders and a missing puppy that happened months ago. I could have done without the side story in this book but I didn't feel lost which was nice.

This is also a "Love Inspired" which means it is a Christian Romance. I really enjoyed that the characters expressed and explored their faith but the book avoided being preachy or over the top with religion which can sometimes be a challenge in this line of book.

Ariel and Tristan are both decent characters. Ariel is worried about her baby and Tristan is worried about his sister Mia. Mia was probably my favorite character in the book. She is an angst filled teen trying to adjust to living with her brother after the death of her parents.

I think the main thing that didn't work for me in this book was the romance. It seemed like things happened really fast. That might not have been such a huge deal if Ariel wasn't in the situation she is in. She had a terrible previous marriage with a very evil man. She is eight months pregnant and yet she and Tristan are falling madly in love. The whole book takes place before the baby is born so in the space of 2 months max. Yet as in every similar romance the characters end with a HEA. That is so fast especially for a character with Ariel's past.

Tristan has his hands full with solving murders and caring for his sister yet he becomes obsessed with Ariel's safety. The book almost implies that is because of some protectiveness that Ariel sparks in him but it just didn't feel real to me. The character had no time to get to know each other. They just kind of came together and were suddenly madly in love. It was a very fast romance and it didn't feel very reasonable to me. It is clear the characters can benefit each other. Neither Ariel or Tristan want to be single parents. Still, that doesn't seem to be their primary motive to get together which would have felt more real.

This book was just okay. I can't really recommend it.

One of the rare times where my unfamiliarity with the earlier titles in the series have affected the enjoyment of the read. The fifth book in the Rookie K-9 Unit series carries underlying suspense/mystery threads forward from earlier titles while we are dealing with the immediate story of Ariel and Tristan.

Ariel is a teacher, pregnant and with an air of mystery. She’s in the small town of Desert Valley after leaving Las Vegas after her husband’s death. While all of that is on her plate, the town is beset with a rash of crime and it hasn’t stopped.

Tristan is an officer with a burden, his teen sister is a student of Ariel’s and is in the middle of her own teenaged moments. Everything that one would expect from a 14 year old with loss and anger issues comes out – usually directed at him. And when Tristan and Ariel start to form a friendship that just may have some notes of romance, even if Ariel and Mia get along, it’s not easy.

So – what was here did reveal a solid connection with Ariel and Tristan, and the relationships that they both had with Mia ring solidly true. Additionally, Tristan’s dog Jesse is wonderful and those moments are clever. But there was SO much going on from the earlier books that a reveal and answer came, but meant little to me in terms of the whole story arc. I’m sure that those familiar with the series felt it worked well, but there are still so many elements unsolved… I just focused on the relationship and left the rest alone.

Best for those who have read the earlier titles in the series, I may find some downtime to grab those titles and start from the beginning.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This is the fifth book of the continuity series, Rookie K-9 Unit. I have loved this series (all of my favorite authors are writing the series) and can't wait to get the next book but now I'm at the point where I hate to get the last book next month because I hate to see it end. This book is well written, action packed, and fast paced much like all of Shirlee's suspense books. I do love her work, don't you?
Ariel Martin is a widow, she is pregnant, and is trying to starting over in Desert Valley. She teaches summer school and is grading papers waiting for one of her student's brother to show up for a meeting when she is attacked. The only person who would want her dead was her ex-husband but he was killed. Could it be the same person who had killed several people in the small sleepy town? A rookie K-9 team rescue her but can she keep her past a secret?
Rookie K-9 Officer Tristan McKellar was late to his meeting with his sisters teacher. He had already cancelled twice, she wasn't going to be happy with him. As he arrives his K-9 partner alerts to a problem. The very pregnant teacher is climbing out one of the windows as a killer is shooting at her. Tristan and his partner rescue her but he is determined to protect her and her unborn baby and find the answers to his questions.
A journey of two brokenhearted individuals struggling to survive the attacks brought on by a mad man. They must learn to trust each other and trust God to help them. God has a plan for these two and it's much greater than they had dreamed. God has a plan for you too. All you have to do is have faith in God, do what He tells you to do, and say what He tells you to say. You will be thrilled by what He has in store for you.

"Love isn't about one Moment, right? It's about all the moments added together to make a beautiful life. I want that with you. Every moment. The good ones and the bad ones."

Oooh I'm sooooo swoon. I need Tristan in my life. He's perfect. He's the knight in shining armor, by shining armor I mean bulletproof vest with the gun and faithful dog, yup he's the rookie K-9 officer. His job is to protect and serve. Man in uniform with gun and dog, oh yeah I'm so in love.
And Ariel. She's pregnant and in danger but it doesn't make her weak, she'll do anything to protect the baby. She's a strong woman.

Okay let's talk about the book.
Love this book, so many actions and plenty of love with great K-9 dogs. I got hot man, great dogs, love, mystery and actions. Yup love this one.
This book is the fifth book from the Rookie K-9 Units Series. Although it's a standalone and I got the glimpse of what happened in the previous books, I think it's better to read them first.

For the story.
It all started with the attacking of Ariel in school, and because recently there's so many crimes in the city, all officers in K-9 units with their dogs are assigned to solve this case. Is this case have connection to the previous cases or not, Officer Tristan will do anything to protect Ariel. In danger and afraid of her own and her baby's safety, all Ariel can do is accept Tristan's protection, and when she feels something in her heart for Tristan, it's getting more complicated, because how can she's in love while her life in danger and her dark past clouding her, right?

If you're looking for suspense romance book, you have to try this one.

Ariel is pretty much starting over in a new town after the fact that she just went though a divorce, to a man who died not long after. Concerned with one of her troubled students she tries to work something out with the girls older brother. Little did they expect for shots to be fired and her life to be in constant danger. If that wasn't bad enough shes pregnant and seems to have a hitman coming for her. Luckily that troubled students brother works as a rookie K-9 Officer who will lend help to this lovely women.

Overall this was a pretty good book. I loved that there was plenty of drama, and that the suspense of never knowing when the assassin might strike next kept me interested. I loved that heat brewing between Tristan and Ariel. I loved how caring Ariel was, she didn't have to go out of her way to help Triantans younger sister. She did what she could and showed that she really cared and it made all the difference in the girls life. I loved how caring Tristan was towards his sister, its tough dealing with work and his troubled younger sister and he was doing the best that he could. One thing I do wish that I had done before reading this book was to read the previous ones as well. Because there was a second case that was going on I got a bit confused and realized that it was apart of the series and I managed to somehow jump in the middle of it. It was still good though, made me want to checkout what happened in the previous books.

A great new instalment for the series I have been following since the start. There are suspense and danger coming from a few different fronts, and keeping the K-9 team busy, looking for clues and keeping their loved ones safe.
Ariel and Tristan were sweet together. They obviously cared for each other, and even though both of their lives were utter chaos, they somehow managed to insert themselves into each other's life so firmly, there was no other choice, but to give the attraction a chance. I liked how they interacted together, how they helped each other, how concern Tristan was about the baby, and Ariel about Mia, Tristan's sister. It was like they were meant to be together, and instant little family was formed when they were in each other's presence. I enjoyed them as characters, they were both easy to like and relate to. I wish their faith would have had more place in the story, not just their activity at the church.
The suspense had some tense and dangerous moments through the tale. Some of it was little predictable, but the story held interest nicely all the way to the end, wondering how and if the culprits were caught.
There's one more book in the series, can't wait to read the grand finale, and to find out the motives of the killer. This story was a great, entertaining mix of threats, peril, dread, and terror, teenage parenting, and a budding, gentle, and tender forever kind of love

This is the 5th book in the series. Some big clues about the overall mystery is learned in this book. So one you won't want to miss. Somethings in this book I could guess were going to happen way before revealed. The reason why they happened I did not guess.

There was plenty of drama, action, danger and romance. There were a lot of good people that stepped up to help when they saw a reason to.

Ariel Martin is eight months pregnant. She has moved back to small town after living in Las Vegas, NV. She is teaching summer school. Her ex-husband asked her for a divorce before she found out she was pregnant. She is all alone in the world.

K-9 officer Tristan McKeller is raising his 14 year old niece after his parents died. He is one of the rookie police officers that was kept on after graduating to help solve all the murders in the small town.

Ariel is alone in the school waiting for Tristan for his sister's parent teacher meeting. When someone else comes in and starts shooting at her. Tristan and his K-9 dog chased the guy away. That is not the only time someone tries to kill her.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I was given this ebook to read for free by NetGalley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give a honest review of Secrets and Lies.
