About the author

Jefferson Smith

Jefferson Smith has always been something of a mystery. Born in several different communities scattered across Canada, he has never been able to stay put for long and has spent his entire life walking the byways of distant realms, seeking out stories of the fantastic. Like the time he devoted two months to shoeing the seahorses of Narnia, or that six-week stint as a comic jester for the Mad King Aerys. He even spent three months once, sculpting dreams in light for a Mouse-lord in Hollywood.

But no matter where he goes or what he sees, Jefferson has a passion for gathering the best bits and weaving them into tales of whimsy and delight for his friends back home. Like a foreign news correspondent reporting from the worlds beyond, he brings tales of the weird and wonderful right into your living room, just in time for tea.

I have a story in this anthology. But as there are fourteen other stories, I feel I am allowed to give it a rating. I've discovered some excellent new authors among this collection and enjoyed the variety and richness it has to offer. And it's free ... what more can you ask for?

Wow. This was a very satisfying read. I have downloaded scores of free ebooks onto my Kindle. Many of them are free because they are in the public domain--those tend to be classics. Many others are free because the author wants someone to read the book and thereby build a fan base. And while I have read many excellent novels that were free to download, many more free ebooks prove the validity of the truism that you get what you pay for. But All These Shiny Worlds really delivers the goods.

My rating might have been higher (five stars rather than four) but for a couple of reasons: First, while all the stories contained a complete story arc, some of them were obviously designed to whet the reader's taste for more story about the same characters. There's nothing wrong with this, but it kept me from giving the fifth star--I would have rather all the stories been completely self-contained. Also, a couple of the stories were too obviously inspired by existing works. The most obvious was the Solomon Kane clone (which nonetheless was a rip-roaring yarn, as Robert E. Howard himself may have proclaimed), and another struck me as so Brandon Sanderson-esque that it felt like it took place on Roshar, the world of The Stormlight Archive.

But those are mere quibbles. I was not bored or disappointed by a single story in this collection. I am looking forward to reading the 2017 sequel anthology as well.

15 science fiction and fantasy stories written by indy authors, which apparently means self-published. An overall nice anthology, which suffers from the same thing as a lot of anthologies: a bit too diverse. Diversity isn't necessarily a bad thing, but a number of these stories where not bad, but just not for my tastes. I also felt like while the stories are decent, they don't pushed the boundaries of sf & fantasy as much as I'd expect from so-called 'indie' writers. This anthology could have been published 10 till 20 years ago.

The First Man in the World - Misha Burnett ***
A nice sf story about a man who is preparing/terraforming a world for colonization. Nicely written, not too surprising though.

The Demon Gambit - J.S. Morin ***
A student in the magical arts takes some risks, trying to deal with a number of demons. Funny, and nicely resolved.

Rolling the Bones - Richard Levesque ***
When a king has no heirs, a magician and his apprentice get involved. Funny, but predictable.

All the Way - Graham Storrs **
A look at post-humanity and their relationships with their still human relatives. Could have been more exciting.

The Ant Tower - Christopher Ruz ****
One of the better stories, some classic sword & sorcery. A mercenary band sets out with their employer, a magician. We follow the remains of the group while they reach their target in the desert. I'll be looking for more writing by Ruz, one of the highlights.

Heft - Brett Adams **
A spy story, not really sf or fantasy. Not my cup of tea.

The First Acolyte of the Upshan Berenthal - Bryce Anderson **
I liked the start if this story, but it did't go to as interesting places as I hoped.

Bronwen's Dowry - Belinda Mellor ***
I'm not usually into romance fantasy, but this story of an ambitious musician/sheep shearer and his new wife is well written and ends in a very satisfying way.

The Spider and the Darkness - Russ Linton ***
Kaaliya lives in a underground city, but yearns to see the outside world. Some new weird overtones, this is one of the few stories in this book to actually feel modern. I'm curious for other work by Linton.

The Dowager's Largesse - Jefferson Smith ***
Karsten, a bounty hunter, gets marked as belonging to the Dowager, the mother of the Emperor. She has clear plans for his future. While I liked the characters overall, I really had to suspend my disbelief a few times. A lot of the plot feels as artificial constraints and too high concept (especially the freely available ale that might mark you as the Dowager's, why would anyone drink that?).

Theriac - Becca Mills **
Modern day, urban fantasy. Callie sees demons, and gets some conflicting feelings when she identifies a little girl as a half-demon. Not bad, but not really my thing.

The Red Flame of Death - Van Allen Plexico ***
Gideon Cain is tracking down a demon who was responsible for the witch trials of Salem. He catches up with him in the middle east. A decent Solomon Kane pastiche.

The Blue Breeze - Regina Richards ***
A bit much world building for a short story that's basically a simple romance story. While the setting is interesting, it felt a bit too constructed.

The Rakam - Karpov Kinrade ***
Another story with very high concept world building, but I liked this one a bit better. Ships on the back of whales (who can even fly), pirates and sorcery.

Antoloģijas sastādītāju ideja ir bijusi sekojoša: piedāvāt 34 vadošajiem indie autoriem fantastikas un fantāzijas žanrā iedot viņiem savu labāko stāstu, paciest to rediģēšanu un beigās publicēties antoloģijā. Beigu beigās palika vien piecpadsmit, kuriem būtu jāparāda autoru labākais sniegums. Man patīk antoloģijas, kuras nav šauri specializētas, jo tad pēc ceturtā stāsta sāk likties, ka lasi vienu un to pašu. Lai gan reizēm man patīk lasīt vienu par un to pašu. Vienu vārdu sakot, iedodiet man izlasīt SSF antoloģiju!

The First Man in the World – Misha Burnett – agrākos laikos šo sauktu par Hard SF, bet mūsdienām pārāk vienkāršs stāstījums. Lieku 7 no 10 ballēm.

The Demon Gambit – J.S. 7 no 10 ballēm.

Rolling the Bones – Richard Levesque – karalis vecs, mantinieku nav. Standarta stāsts 6 no 10 ballēm.

All the Way – Graham Storrs – nedaudz transhumānisma, pasaulē, kurā cilvēks var izvairīties no nāves. Aizved nostaļģijā uz sešdesmitajiem un septiņdesmitajiem. Mūsdienās prasās kaut kas nedaudz vairāk. Taču 7 no 10 ballēm ir pelnītas.

The Ant Tower – Christopher Ruz – burvji, karavīri un ļaunās burvestības.

6 no 10 ballēm

The First Acolyte of the Upshan Berenthal – Bryce Anderson – šis man patika, noslēpumains artefakts, nedaudz reliģijas dogmatism kritikas un visnotaļ interesanti varoņi, kuriem tiek piedāvātas interesantas izvēles. 9 no 10 ballēm.

6 no 10 ballēm.

The Spider and the Darkness – Russ Linton – šeit ir interesanta pasaule, nedaudz padrūma, bet kāda gan var tā būt pazemē. 9 no 10 ballēm.

Galvenajai varonei to nākas atklāt uz savas ādas. 7 no 10 ballēm.

The Red Flame of Death – Van Allen Plexico – veco laiku stilā izstāstīts piedzīvojums. Galvenais varonis atstājis Salemu, lai pieliktu punktu dēmonam, kurš ir pie vainas Raganu prāvai. Dēmonu viņš vajā pa visu pasauli un, iespējams, reiz tas tiks sakauts, taču cīņa ar nelabo nav viegla. 10 no 10 ballēm.

9 no 10 ballēm.

10 no 10 ballēm.

Anthologies are tricky to rate, because there are good stories and there are not so good stories.

This anthology proclaims to include the best of the best indie authors... first the authors have to survive the 40 minute Immerse or Die challenge, then they have to do well on a full read through, then authors are asked if they would like to submit a short story to the anthology, then the stories are judged by a panel of three judges. Also, authors who get invited are given the chance to invite one other author. The anthology is free, with the idea that after showcasing their work in the anthology, readers will find new readers to follow. I really like that, and overall this anthology was quite good. That said, I didn't like every single story, and I had low hopes after reading the first one...

1 First Man in the World - 2 stars - People who like traditional sci-fi might enjoy this, but for me it lacked any sense of humanity or struggle. Just a vague how-to terraform a planet. Not my cup of tea.

2 Three Demon Gambit - 4 stars - I enjoyed the twists and turns in this story, even though I didn't like the protagonist, a student in a school of magic. Dealing with demons and rival students was interesting.

3 Rolling the Bones - 4 stars - disturbing use of necromancy, found it difficult to parse the characters at first, but once I figured out the king and wizard were two different people, it flowed well and I enjoyed following the protagonist through his difficult choices surrounding the morality of using necromancy to preserve the peace.

4 All the Way - 4 stars - A future where dying people can upload themselves to robots and work in space. Quite a human story, however, and I felt quite bad for the robot's ex-wife.

5 Scales Fall - 4 stars - I'm not even sure if I fully understood this story, with how it jumped around in time, but I enjoyed it a lot. It all felt so familiar, possibly because I read a lot of ancient Egyptian stuff as a kid.

6 The Ant Tower - 5 stars - Here was a story I didn't want to end. The shifting in time with each scene took some getting used to, but the story was excellent. By far my favorite up to this point. With plenty of twists and turns, this trek through the desert didn't end the way I thought it would. I want to read more from this author.

7 Heft - 3 stars - I found this spy story with a twist rough at first, and I'm not sure I fully got the ending. I think I did, but the uncertainty left me feeling unsure how to rate this one. I was left with the feeling that there was something clever that happened, but it wasn't explained enough for me to understand in its entirety. Maybe if I read it a second time, but it wasn't a story I enjoyed enough to do that with. The philosophy behind it was some next-level stuff that isn't too hard to imagine actually happening, though.

8 The First Acolyte of the Upshan Berental - 5 stars - A story of being true to yourself, even in the face of disapproving authority. I enjoyed the theme, and also want to see all the worlds.

9 Bronwen's Dowry - 5 stars - This story of a poor shearer and his wife going to a gathering of pipers was genuinely moving. I loved this one.

10 The Spider and the Darkness - 5 stars - This fantasy tale involving an abused girl seeking to escape her lot in life was fantastic.

11 The Dowager's Largesse - 5 stars - I already bought the next story in this series because I loved it so much. Who doesn't love the sound of a cursed bounty hunter with a belligerent llama companion?

12 Theriac - 4 stars - A woman who sees demons (maybe? The way others brush off her concerns makes me wonder...) is confronted with the not so difficult decision of what to do about some half-demon children. As written, it's 3 stars, except that it had me thinking about it afterwards, wondering what the truth of the matter is, so it got an extra star.

13 The Red Flame of Death - 3 stars - This story about a holy man hunting a demon was okay. The pacing and writing were fine, but in the end I didn't really care how it ended, because the characters were flat.

14 The Blue Breeze - 4 stars - While certainly the most imaginative of the bunch, creating a rich and dangerous world, the elements of the plot felt quite familiar. A forbidden love story, mingled with the thought, "There's always a bigger fish."

15 The Rakam - no rating - First person present tense? Ugh. I have other things I want to read, and after struggling through the first paragraph I said, "Forget it." I won't count this one toward the average rating, because I couldn't give it a fair chance.

Can't fault any of the stories in this collection. There is more than one story I'd be happy to read more of in the same setting.

This was an excellent collection of sci-fi and fantasy short stories that all fans of the genres are likely to enjoy. Of course, as with any anthology I enjoyed some stories more than others.

Now, as this is an Immerse or Die anthology the review does need to be written in IOD style.

WTF #1: "The First Man in the World": The first sentence of this first story was, to me, rather convoluted and long. It took me several reads of this sentence to fully understand it. I do not think there is anything technically wrong with it, it was simply a lot to digest and get my head around in one sentence.

Kudos #1: "The First Man in the World": The best use of intentional echoing headwords I have ever seen. Passages like the following and several other similar passages were incredibly effective and told the story perfectly.
"He was thirty-eight years old.
He was newborn.
He was one hundred and eighty-four years old."

WTF #2: Theriac, Location 3623. The word "throughthat" should have been 2 words, "through that".

WTF #3: The Rakam, Location 4866. The original sentence is: "He tells one of his crew, a women larger than me, to stop me." As this is referring to one person it should have read "a woman larger" rather than the plural "women".

Now, having just 3 WTFs (1 of them just my opinion, not a true error) in an entire anthology is a really well done and well edited book. Kudos to the authors and editors for such a well done book.

As to the stores my favorites were "The First Man in the World", "All the Way", and "Heft"

My least favorites (although by no means bad stories, just not my favorites" were "Scales Fall", "Theriac" and "The Ant Tower" (possibly because I had already read the novel and it was so much more filled out).

The stories "The Dowager's Largess" and "The Rakam" did not feel like short stories. Both of these felt more like the first section of a novel and both left me wanting to read more about these characters and these worlds.

So, once again, overall this is an excellent collection and I highly recommend it to all sci-fi and fantasy fans!

I first read The Rakam by Karpov Kinrade. I loved this! It has a feel like Science Fiction or the Fantasies of yesteryear; like a cross of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Andre Norton, and L.E. Modesitt, Jr. The writing style also reminded me of other of my favorite authors from my younger years. This is a good start to a series I can tell I will enjoy, and am looking forward to the next one! I really cannot tell much of the plot without giving away too much. Large, occasionally flying whales as transport. Spearing. Very nasty predators. Three major Families/Clans. And a pursuit.

And also:
The First Man In The World / Misha Burnett; This had the feel of hopeful Science Fiction, maybe 60's, 70's - it made me weepy (in a good way). I really miss having stories of this type and quality.
Three Demon Gambit / JS Morin; As the editor's intro says, have seen many of these type stories, but very nicely done, and you really don't know what's going to happen until the end. Very nice. (And sometimes roommates suck. Minor spoiler.)
Rolling The Bones / Richard Levesque; I did guess what the point of this was, or I should say the what would eventually happen; but was not sure. Also very well written.
All The Way / Graham Storr; This has a very hard science fiction feel; but seems closer to being relevant compared to when I first read about the premise, and also with more of a feel how one's personality might be altered. (I'm cryptic to avoid a spoiler)
Scales Fall / Dave Higgins; This made me think of how I would feel to lose my darling. I totally understand where Philip is coming from, but was wrong about details; and I am still not sure where they ended up. (here or there)

Will try to update as I finish more. But so far, everything far exceeds my expectations for new (to me) authors.

I'd never heard of Immerse or Die, but knew two of the authors taking part (Graham Storrs and Chris Ruz) so decided to give it a shot. And boy, I'm glad I did.

This is an excellent collection of 15 speculative fiction stories, well-edited and varied, each story chunky enough to feel substantial. Yes, some stories will appeal to you more than others, but they're all good in their own way.

A round up below - those with a star in front of their names were personal favourites.

* THE FIRST MAN IN THE WORLD
Introspective, quietly beautiful science fiction about a lonely man.

THREE DEMON GAMBIT
Humorous fantasy about magic schools.

ROLLING THE BONES
Creepy medieval fantasy about a dying King.

*ALL THE WAY
What if your mind could be uploaded before death?

SCALES FALL
A horror contemporary fantasy with mummies. One of my least favourites.

*THE ANT TOWER
I'd read this one before but it's brilliant - a magician's quest through the desert.

HEFT
The odd one out for me; a spy thriller.

THE FIRST ACOLYTE OF...
A humorous fantasy in a remote village.

BRONWEN'S DOWRY
A medieval story which reminded me of a fairy tale.

*THE SPIDER AND THE DARKNESS
Great world building of life in a pit.

THE DOWAGER'S LARGESSE
I could have read more of this medieval, grizzled sellsword who takes a gamble.

THERIAC
A contemporary fantasy about personal prejudice. Cute.

THE RED FLAME OF DEATH
High fantasy about a demon hunter.

*THE BLUE BREEZE
It took me a while to sink into this alternative fantasy world, but it's amazingly imaginative.

*THE RAKAM
Great descriptions in this piece, and a good pirate-style fantasy story too.

Overall a great read, long enough to get your teeth into, with something for every taste. Recommended!

The first several stories in this anthology were all excellent, and I started to think that perhaps the "Immerse or Die" approach used to select them was flawless. Usually, I find anthologies to be a mixed bag -- after all, the odds are against my tastes aligning perfectly with the editor's. Yet this book seemed to be an exception.

Then, in the middle of the book, there it was: a couple of stories that, while well-written, read more like prologues to series than actually compelling stories. This includes Jefferson Smith's own contribution, "The Dowager's Largesse." (Did he actually put his own story through the same process as the other ones?) "Theriac," by Becca Mills, actually serves as a prologue for her Eminations series. I get that these prologues are easy for editors to get their hands on, as authors like the free publicity. But that doesn't make them good self-contained stories, and their presence weakens this anthology just like any other one.

Still, even with those weak prologue stories, the collection was far better than most.

These worlds shine enough to deserve 4🌟

I was expecting more science fiction stories in this collection, but are mostly 90% fantasy, that is not what I was looking for but, I have to say I enjoyed the book nonetheless.
I was going to rate it three stars until I read the last two stories , I found them very very good and lift up the overall value the book.
Anthologies on kindle are usually quite cheap but this one and the following second installment are completely free so even a major bonus.

For the most part, these were enjoyable stories. Half of these are at least five star level in my opinion, and the others are 4 or 2 star. I only skipped a couple, which while not good for that story, it is great for a collection. I read and enjoy 75% of this collection, which is a great average, and I would recommend to anyone to read.

A Few Interesting Stories.

Not a great anthology but a few stories I really enjoyed. Has a variety of different worlds that everyone should find a couple they like. My favorite was Dowager's Largesse. I enjoy humor in stories and I really wanted to read more like that. A few were also written in First Person which I dislike.

Some of these short stories were great and I would love to read a book on them. Others had me dragging my feet and putting off reading. Short stories usually are not my thing, I prefer a well developed story of epic length. But there is a little bit of something for everyone and most were enjoyable to tolerable.

Great variations in all of the stories. Some awesome authors some I have read before and some I was introduced to. Thank you for the opportunity to revisit some and to be introduced to new writers.

A really good set of short stories

I wasn't expecting to like as many as I did, but there were a lot of good stories here. Generally I'm not a huge fan of short stories, but I guess I was in the right mood this time. It was especially good for being free!

A collection of great stories.

I am familiar with one of the authors Misha Burnett and bought it because of him. The book as a whole is a great read. Two stories The Dowagers Largesse and The Rakam would make great series.

Awesome. Thank you.

I love reading new stuff but I hate bad writing and pee poor editing. With this anthology, I very seldom desirous of getting out my red pen.
I could read as fast as I wanted and zipped through these in record time.
Thanks for the ride.

This is probably the greatest collection of short stories I've ever read! There was only one story that was so-so, and that was mostly because in trying to make an homage they didn't add anything new. The rest were fantastic, and I didn't want the book to end.

Most were really good

One of the stories I did not read because of the old English dialect, however, I enjoyed all the rest of them quite a bit.
